I didn't think buying the BMF belt was a misstep at all. If Max and the UFC had agreed to put the BMF belt on the line Ilia would not have had to buy one. Him buying one is a foreshadowing to let Max know he's gonna beat him, & since Max didn't put that belt on the line, Ilkia is going to be walking around as the true BMF afterwards.

On the one hand… Max is right, there’s no point talking because they’re gonna get to fight. On the other hand, Illia’s not trash talking… he’s dead serious and confident. Illia is going to finish Max Holloway. The guy is 27 and a lethal finisher. His skills are legit and he starched the P4P #2 Volk in 7 mins. That’s not bullshit. He destroyed Bryce Mitchell. When Jose said that Max isn’t a Conor or an Ilia when it comes to trash talk, I don’t see Ilia as such a great trash talker either. I just don’t see it, am I missing something? He is good at it, but he’s not on the same planet as Conor, Bisping, Chael, even Nate.

I won't disagree with you, but it's very unfair to judge Ilia's public speaking in his third language. Conor barely knew any Gaelic, and Chael definitely does not even have a second language. I have heard from Spanish-speaking people that Ilia is way more eloquent in Spanish, though there is no way for me to know first-hand.
