Despite the massive clean up that followed, despite not having power for almost two weeks, we managed okay. But the trees! It looked like a bomb dropped on some neighbours, and there's even a roofless house in the middle of town that's been abandoned since, still with the furniture and everything. Ever tried to get a reasonable premium price on Insurance in a high risk area? No company Australia wide is going to insure people living in Cyclone prone Qld, NT or WA without making them PAY through the nose. Many home owners up there can't afford the premium for Cyclone-coverage. Why do you think those who can afford to do so make their homes Cyclone-proof? Even Cyclone-proof homes can be no match against some of our worst. I remember another cyclone back in 1995/1996 also named Debbie which didn't do much. The "Debbie" that hit Qld back in March was strong - as strong and easily as big as what Cyclone Larry was and Larry had a considerable knock-on effect for the rest of us, even down here in the south. Larry also managed to destroy Cyclone-proof houses. PS: For Andy's Fishing: Were you able to replace your solar systems?

Glad you're OK man and good luck with the clear up.

@@Vector_Ze Unless you've owned property with overgrown trees near the house you won't understand - there's nothing wrong with that as you just haven't had the experience but tree management has nothing to do with hating trees.
@Vector_Ze3 жыл бұрын
@@ThousandYardStare Unless you understand that these events are once in a lifetime or less frequent, you can't understand that the pleasure of having trees in your yard far outweighs the danger. I happen to live in ground zero of a Category 5 hurricane strike three years ago. My house was destroyed. My mother's house, where I spent the storm had a tree fall on the roof. A once in a lifetime event doesn't mean clearing the yard of trees, that's an absurdity. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGm6emV5p5p3fqM
@ThousandYardStare3 жыл бұрын
@@Vector_Ze Trees aren't generally maintained or removed for a once in a lifetime event. They're removed or maintained when they get too close / overhang a property or have unsafe branches (e.g. from Beech trees which can drop at any time). To not maintain / trim or remove unsafe trees through pure ignorance or denial of the potential danger would be negligent at best and fatal at worst. If you have large trees so near the house and fail to ensure their safety having one fall onto the house and crush it will most definitely be a once in a lifetime event for anyone under it when it falls. Last year a small child was killed by a falling branch at a local school here where a huge overhanging tree limb was not removed despite concerns being raised about it being over the playground. The limb dropped in the middle of Summer when there was no wind and no warning so to suggest that avoiding that sort of tragedy by managing or removing trees is 'absurd' is ignorance at the highest level. You have the right to neglect your property if you want to but when an unmaintained tree destroys the house or kills someone there's only one way to point the finger.

When you said “ and I don’t have insurance” that hit me hard. Also in SA right now there is extreme winds and rain in huge Bursts that go for about an hour or 2.

@@_Andrew2002 wrong hurricanes are as strong as cyclones can get and both are only a little weaker then Typhoons can get to.

man, glad you survived! Must have been very hectic. I've been watching all this closely as my sailboat is moored at Bowen and it looked like Debbie would hit directly there. A question though, I've heard a few people say they have no house insurance, why is this? It looks like you have a beautiful house, why would you not insure it, specially when you live in a region that can get pelted with bad weather. Thats not a criticism, I'm just wondering if there's a reason like is insurance super expensive or hard to get in the Whitsunday region?
@Andysfishing7 жыл бұрын
I paid for insurance for the past 8 years, at about $1500 per year. This is the second year I have gone without. So I'm a bit unlucky. Buy I can rebuild it, the super structure of my house is super strong.
@deanstewart13397 жыл бұрын
you had to go through this and others had to lose there houses and the media dose not care about you guys all they care about is these people getting flash floods and losing there cars and and getting 300mm of rain with not much wind at all. hope everything goes well for use and every one who were effected up north.

My 91 year old friend Keith hill has a bus/caravan in a Bowen caravan park (North Queensland). The caravan park had to get evacuated but he refused, typical old bluey. Anyway he survived but his bus almost got crushed by a tree. He doesn't even care XD.
