Something that has worked for me is doing a free social media/website audit. I make a PDF doc about what I think their strengths/weaknesses are (before I even contact them) so that I can immediately provide them with something valuable for free, and so I can prove my expertise.

Hey Ross, I really appreciate your video. As I’m starting my own production company, I was a bit scared to reach out to potential clients and unsure of how to approach it. Watching your videos has really helped me push through my fear and doubt, and has been very encouraging. So happy I found your video. I've been struggling to kick off for a few months. I'm finally ready now😭💛🙏

Pro Building sounded like a nice guy, he was down to earth and real, and actually remained receptive the entire time! Tbh all the calls were brilliant, I was surprised how receptive people were to taking the call - I've had quite a few just put the phone down on me the moment I got to "This is just a speculative call, I'm a videographer and wondered if you have a need right now for some video content on your socials" .... *beep beep beep. This is a really great series, I'm a couple years into the journey, but this was still revolutionary!

Great work on this series! I've been in the video production business for a few years now, and while I’ve got the experience in the technical and creative aspects, I’ve often found myself lacking in business expertise-something I know many fellow videographers, designers, photographers, and visual communicators struggle with. Your approach and transparency in building a business from the ground up is incredibly valuable and inspiring. It’s refreshing to see someone tackle the business side of things in such a practical, step-by-step manner. Thanks for sharing these insights and for providing real, actionable advice that can help creatives like us take our businesses to the next level! Greetings from Portugal! The market here has not so generous budgets but I am willing to give it a try on your systems ideas!

The guy at 33:00 doesn't understand that an investment into professional photo and video work would help him capture more clients because his advertised assets would look so much more professional, and ultimately make him more money. The thing you said about how much you charge is exactly what I was thinking.

Nice video mate. I've started my own videography business back in March and this is exactly where I'm up to. I've decided I would like to niche down into sport and travel but so far it seems like a tricky niche to get paying clients in. Would you recommend being more open to more variety and focus on building a strong portfolio before focussing on a particular niche?
@RossWelch7 ай бұрын
Hey dude, awesome! Yes you're right. I'd be more broad and then niche down over time. We work in the sports sector and it's really really competitive. You'll do great if you stick at it but for the time being and cashflow id go broader :)

Hi Ross, I've actually just started a business very similar to this process, currently working with some clients for free to build portfolio and pulling my socials, website Etc in the background ready to utilise these AI tools for leads, couldn't have made this series at a better time. I'm finding this invaluable and this is really helping me through a process where I don't have much experience or help. keep it coming lol Where do I find your training on the lead generation?
@seanpg35467 ай бұрын
Also, aware this is a bit off topic but ill go for it. I assume with the size of your business now you have lawyers writing your client contracts but how did you manage this when you where starting out or when you weren't as big. I'd like to protect myself with a contract of sorts but at this stage having it written by anyone in that field just isn't going to happen. not looking for you to spell out a plan or anything just interested in how you managed this as a starter. TIA

With the email you made, its direct where you referenced someone’s previous social media post. Is it best to make the email campaign more about quantity or quality?
@RossWelch7 ай бұрын
Hey there! It's all about finding the sweet spot between sending enough emails to reach your audience and making sure each one is top-notch. Personally I'd go for quality until you work out what works best and then scale that!

I got a question to ask since I thought that charging £500 just for the production and £150 per day of editing which is 8 hours was fair for a starting production company; Since I'll be hiring people to help me out, I want to give them the rate that they charge which for me is £100-150 depending on budget plus travel. Should I be giving discounted rates say for £200 and skipping the editing costs?
@RossWelch7 ай бұрын
Humm, if i've understood you correctly, here's what i'd do: (hope this helps): If you're charging £150 for editing and your editor is £150 then you need to make some money! Id ask them if they are willing to reduce based on you giving them work or up your rate to £250 and then pay them £150. With outscourcing you need to ensure you're still making healthy profit.
@JanWilliamsBailey7 ай бұрын
@@RossWelch that is fair, mainly it’s people that I’m going to be hiring for, I will be hiring editors in the future. And I’ll be raising the cost for that so I can make money.

Hey Ross! I, as an editor have built up a portfolio but I'm wondering if I can use my own portfolio for my business/agency? Or do I have to start fresh?
@RossWelch7 ай бұрын
Hey Joshua, yes absolutely! I'd just put a note under the video to say it was an editing project and not full production (so it doesn't look like you filmed it too)
