Late spring in Germany. Cons: Cold and wet, foggy in the morning. Some weekends left with winch operations, a bit of hanggliding if I'm extra lucky. Pros: Tim starts uploading videos again :)

That looked epic and thanks for sharing the flight. Puretrack is looking great as a moving map an a source for other traffic (Flaram and ADS-B in) along with the weather.

That is very useful to know exactly where the sea breeze front is. 👍 So it is either the satellite- cheat to stay on the right side of the front in the convergence... Or it is the start- the- engine- cheat to get home when you end up on the wrong side?... 😁

Haha both

Nice video summary of a nice flight. Puretrack certainly adds to the fun. Nice to be able to see where the other aircraft are (and there were lots) and as a bonus to see where cloud streets are when deciding to go down the western side of Hamilton. Deep blue at the end.

Thank you for this beautiful thrilling flight! I am presently only flying motorized stuff, was looking forward to picking up gliding in a club I became a member of just over a year ago specifically to achieve this goal. Unfortunately just like that cloud/thermal which disintegrated on you half way thru, that very club started disintegrating on me from within. Ignorant members are now talking about selling off the winch, they already lost the ASK21-MI they had, and they seem to be willing to shut down the club entirely. If they decide to sell the historical "Bergfalke" glider as well I'll try to obtain at least that and the winch and go off to somewhere else, where assets like those are appreciated...
@PureGlide2 күн бұрын
Sorry to hear that! Is it a combined gliding and aero club? I've heard that can be a common thing to happen eventually, depending on who's on the committee, it can end up going the wrong direction, it's hard to keep the balance....

Hi Tim. I'm watching the latest America's Cup yacht racing and the broadcasters have some sort of device/sensor (laser?) to measures wind speed/pressure across the course and they translate that to a colourised graphic to inform the viewers as to which course is likely to offer the most advantage. Do you think this sort of tech could be applied for finding thermals in gliding? I'm thinking of some sort of overlay on your map or an augmented reality view showing where the thermals/updrafts are.
@PureGlide3 күн бұрын
Hi, we almost do have that, but with the SkySight forecasts. They can show where the convergence lines and thermals are likely to be for example. I also have live wind from weather stations on PureTrack for New Zealand and France, so we are moving that direction!
@MassimoPugiDelta3 күн бұрын
To my humble opinion, if one day some company will invent a pair of goggle which shows where the thermals are, I will never buy that item because it will kill the fun of it! Same as to any on screen device up to detect thermal and updraft… I’ll consider it as doping! is in sports!! It definitely would turn off you sense of “feeling” the air as well as reading the sky’s condition and numb your instinct and thus shutting off the fun of the uncertainty by flying engineless. By the way, I am a hang glider pilot from Europe. Cheers

Luckily we already have a really good thermal indicating system. It's unbelievable, but someone put big white fluffy things on top of them! It's crazy ;)

How is the controled airspace there ? Here we have a 4500 feet altitude restriction plus a lot of TMA and CTR and very unfriendly ATC .It's a bit better on Week ends .
@PureGlide3 сағат бұрын
We have a lot of airspace. In this case cloudbase was below 4500’ which was the limit in some places. A lot of our areas are 6500’ limit. So no problem! I went around the airport airspace which is lower (2500’)

I made a few 300+km flights before the GPS , so it's possible .
@fredbloggs59023 күн бұрын
I’m guessing within 5 years there will be an AI app available to recommend flight choices. People will argue it’ll take away all the fun, but I think you’ll also be able to compete with the model to get a relative score plus an analysis of what you did and recommendations on how to improve. You could end up with something analogous to a golf handicap.
@PureGlide3 күн бұрын
Yeah who knows! quite frankly I enjoy the technology side of gliding, it's all part of the fun. There are many purists who don't want that stuff, and that's fine.

Just another cockpit distraction. You already know where that ridge line is, also its spring time down under with warmer air rising and those sea breezes startup right on schedule. So, you could have donated that Patreon Money to something less selfish.
