I had a sigmoid resection for diverticulitis in 2008 after repeated painful attacks. My surgeon told me I lost 4 - 6 inches of my colon, and I'll never miss it! I was 5 hours in surgery. I had an open procedure. Recovery was uneventful; spent 5 days in the hospital until I pooped, then went home! Its a serious surgery, no doubt, but for those facing this, its not as bad as your thinking. You can do it! Almost no pain post-op. Worst part was getting my drain removed!

I was diagnosed with Diverticulitis in 2020 at age 39. I had no idea what it was. After multiple flare ups and a stay in the hospital for an abscess, i met with a good surgeon and elected to have surgery. I had about 6-7 inches in the sigmoid area removed. He said it was “smoldering” diverticulitis which i assume basically means chronic. I just had the surgery on 12/5. 2 days later i got to go home and now on day 4 after surgery. Pain at home has been manageable so far. I just did not want to worry and live with this anymore. Hopefully i can make a full recovery soon.

Thanks for posting. This video was another great reminder that the left ureter can get sucked into any inflammatory process and end up more medial than you'd expect. This was also a great demonstration of how to recognize you've gone off the correct plane and how to troubleshoot difficult inflammatory adhesions. And I agree that contrary to what some may say, "open" is not a four-letter word.

Hi Betty, good wishes for the 29th. I’m having surgery on Thursday 22nd July just to assess if I can have plastic surgery on my buttocks from where infection was cut out both sides from Necrotising fasciitis . They need to find out if removing the Seaton drain which sits between my buttocks near my anus is too close to the sphincter muscles for plastic surgery and assess what they do when they reverse my stoma and connect the colon back to the sphincter later. Just for good measure they are doing a full colonoscopy. I have to drink that prep drink on the day before to empty my bowels. My stoma bags will fill quickly. Please stay in touch if you like, so we can exchange each other’s stories.

That is tricky. A Urologist put a catheter to illuminate my left uretal running from my left kidney to illuminate my left colon, for safety. Something may have rested on a nerve going to your testes. It sounds like it would be "exploratory surgery" to see what happened. You might have a prolapse, a hernia, and only another surgery will fix it. My surgery was April 2023.
