I heard of one "Baba" who during the COVID pandemic told people to go out on the streets, onto balconies and terraces and bang on plates and thalis, and light lamps and flash their phone torches to get rid of the pandemic. And crores of Indians believed him and carried out his instructions. I was surprised to see even educated albeit ignorant people following the instructions of this Baba who himself is not much educated, and that is the situation in India, where blind belief in Babas overrides education and reason.

Babas (mostly fraudsters) were always there across India. Only difference is that earlier these Babas mostly targeted the rich people. Now these Babas target the middle class & poor people (trying to take benefit of their insecurities) creating a huge base of followers and our Politicians are hell bent to leverage the influence of these Babas like never before.

Good report. This phenomenon due to people not reading basic religious scriptures with their authentic meaning. It's forbidden to go such bababs or Peers or Dargah in Islam. But still people do it across religion due to ignorance.

Some 50 years back the then American Ambassador to India John Kenneth Galbraith called India a functioning anarchy. The situation still continues with its many Babas and their quick prescriptions for all wordly problems. There is nothing called scientifc temper even among scientists. With the Hindutva and the BJP calling shots on anything and everything the situation can only worsen. Babas and godmen are proving to be our answer to inequality, casteism, communalism, the elements that are taking us back to 200 or 300 years back.

It is a matter of great concern that more and more people (some even educated), fall prey to these scamsters in the guise of 'Godmen'. If these 'Godmen' could really bring relief, all our hospitals would have closed down as they would have telepathically cured the ill, there would have been no poverty as these men would have alleviated everyone from it and the world would have become a peaceful place as they would have ended wars. When one feels inclined to follow a 'baba', just think of this - which baba/astrologer/godman predicted Covid-19 and after its onset, which of them could stop it? The Answer : NONE! Such is the power of Godmen, the world over!

The social insecurity is surprisingly high among the youth nowadays. Youth are supposed to be skeptical of supernatural stuff as a normal function of their age. The real change is now in the fast spread and herd acceptance of unthinking expressions - be they religious or secular - due to the power of social media. For instance, until the 1980s, wearing of threads on forearms was never so prevalent among the young folks, especially in the cities.

The obsession with spiritual gurus has been endemic in India throughout its entire history. It has little to do with politics. People want quick or instant solutions for their mundane needs and aspirations. Besides this is not restricted to India alone but is a global phenomenon.

Chandraswamy or Dhirendra Brahmachari revelled more in playing the role of ‘Rajgurus’. Most recently we have Swaroopanandendra in AP whom both Jagan Reddy and KCR approached before 2019 elections. It is not an exaggeration that Jawaharlal Nehru personified in himself the rational thinking and scientific temper. He was at helm for a long time. Those times, naturally, Nation was listening to him. I still remember that Nehru dismissed Ashtagraha Kutami or conjunction of eight planets as a rare astronomical event, which indeed it was, and refused to believe and partake in all the religious ceremonies commissioned by many believers. Finally he was proved right. Times have come a full circle now.

I never heard shankaracharyas saying cow urine will cure cancers.. they propagate peace and Shankaracharya are important pillars of Hinduism.. positive Hinduism rather than lates narration..daily one hears one or the other bjp member saying cow dung, urine medicine for fatal disease.. because they know they are ruling the andh Bakhts community… best part is when these bjp members or their family members suffer from cancer they go for chemo or radiation therapy rather than using cow dung or urine
