(13WMAZ) Latest forecasts from the National Hurricane Center predict that Tropical Storm Debby will continue to intensify over the Gulf of Mexico until the storm reaches Category 1 strength. Currently, it is set to make landfall as a Category 1 Hurricane around the Florida Big Bend region, and hurricane watches and warnings have been issued for these areas in expectation of hurricane strength conditions. The tropical storm watches and warnings have been extended to include southern counties in Georgia and the Georgia and South Carolina coasts.
Model certainty continues to grow towards Tropical Storm Debby moving northeast and entering the southeastern region of Georgia on Monday and sitting in this region through Tuesday. During this time, the storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall amounts to our south and eastern counties here in central Georgia. Because of the certainty through this point in the forecast, the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch from this evening until Tuesday night for the south and eastern counties in central Georgia, with up to 10 inches of rain possible over the next two days.
Flooding will be our main concern here in central Georgia, though we could also see some damaging wind gusts, up to 35 to 40 miles per hour. A Weather Impact Alert has been issued for Monday and Tuesday while this storm is forecasted to linger near Central Georgia.
