I’m so tired of hearing Trump’s lawyers claim that “nobody was damaged“ and that “everybody walked away happy“ in his business dealings. This is not about the banks. The fact is that the people of the State of New York were harmed. Because of the underrepresentation of his assets for tax purposes, the people of New York missed out on a huge amount of tax revenue. Somebody needs to state that loudly and clearly.

I get nervous every time one of these legal analysts gives their prediction because they have been really wrong a lot. They say the court should do something and explain the law and the evidence and then they are back on afterwards saying how the decision makes no sense. I would be surprised if Trump pays more than the 170 million he had to put up for a bond. He will get the presidential deference he seems to get at every turn.

I’m not a resident of New York City or the state either, so my perspective is limited to what I have seen and heard from the media or the actual people who are directly affected by this situation. But just from what I’ve seen, Mayor Adams has always given me a sense of suspicion and distrust from the way he has handled different issues publicly. When he was a totally condescending, patronizing jerk to a woman who had asked him a legitimate question about the housing issues and what he, as the mayor, was going to do, I immediately lost a lot of respect for him. But when he gave that press conference to respond to the indictment, it was so disappointing and also quite telling. He mimicked the same talking points as Trump! He had the audacity to say that the federal prosecutors were persecuting him for speaking out against the Biden administration? Really dude? Come on now, you sound like another crook who uses conspiracy theories and victim hood to gaslight the people into thinking he’s a victim of a corrupt government who is trying to silence him. Smh. If the charges are even remotely true, he’s a bad guy at least and a crooked liar and thief at best.

but the public interest demands the fine. they lied to the tax authority to lower the value and lied to the banks to raise the value. it is not victim-less. the tax authority directly lost $. the bank overvalued the collateral of the loan, lowering the interest rate and if the collateral had to be seized, it may not have been sufficient to cover the balance of the loan. further, insurance values were inflated, so he would have made $ if a claim had been entered.
