Regarding Taash, the Qunari and the topic of gender identity, I feel like the Qunari and their role system were a major missed opportunity for a true non-binary fantasy species back then. They're already assigned the roles they're best suited for, why unnecessarily slap gender roles on top of it? Why not let it fall into place naturally? But in doing so the writers undermined the whole role system idea. It never made sense to me. What about all the roles/occupations between military=men and caretakers=women? What about gardeners, artisans, scientists etc.? Why would it be important to associate gender with occupations in a role system based society? And what is being assigned 'man' or 'woman' in Qunari society actually about? How do they then handle gender and sex? Are there prejudices and repercussions when not submitting to that system? The black and white notion that there MUST be men (= military, THE leader) and women (= scholars, caretakers) (because what else would there be, how else would it work, right?) is such a half-baked idea that reeks of 90s/00s gaming. Whenever I think about it, I kind of feel a little depressed how limited we have been and probably still are by our own lived societal realities, worldviews and frame of knowledge when it comes to creative storytelling and worldbuilding :,)

@@bermudabarracuda1902 you do make a good point. I feel like it is odd for the Qunari to have these gender roles especially considering that they are translating the roles into English. It would have been better if they used different words. Like Sten buckles against the idea of calling him a man because the Qun doesn't have a word for it and they don't associate gender with anything. He is his role. Gender isn't a factor. I think that would have been really cool to see. But as you said it is a bit of a half-baked idea. I do agree that so much of world building is limited to what our world views are. Dragon Age was different in regards to gender norms but it could have explored a lot with the Qunari. I just want to say that I love discussions like this.
