Puck screen has been a game changer for me, zero channeling using bottomless, and much cleaner group head.

Great explanation of why using a puck screen is important.

New sub here, I just got a compact Casabrew espresso machine, basic, with good reviews, so far it fits my needs. I ordered a bottomless portafilter, I already use a puck screen mainly to keep the head clean. I'm using a WDT, 51mm distributor and MHW-Bomber 30lb tamper.

I found sizing the puck screen is a trial and error prop. Why, because the puck screen is made of metal, and when the HOT water hits it, the metal will expand. What this means is that a perfectly fitting cold puck screen will be hard to remove after it has heated and expanded. A 53.5mm screen is tight to remove. I am looking for a 53mm screen. But not all 53mm screens ARE 53mm. Some are just a tiny bit larger.

Hoon, you've help me tremendously. I fell for the WDT tool, but not for puck screen yet. I want a bottomless portafilter, but will wait for the next machine (58mm).

Thanks, how about using bottomless basket with single spout Portafilter for avoiding channels mess ?

Hey Hoon, being a "Breville guy". What do you think about the Breville Double Boiler? I tried searching but you don't seem to talk much about it.

is it normal to touch the Puck screen in to the grouphead? Obviously when I bought my Puck screen, the level of coffee plus puck screen went up and the puck screen and group head is touching when I rotate/ lock the portafilter. LMK thanks!

I just recently got a bottomless portafilter for my Barista Express. With that, I purchased the 14-18g IMS precision filter basket (I use 18g and the next size basket would be too large). My question is what size puck screen should I get? I see yours is a 53.3mm / 1mm thickness. I cannot find any in that size with that thickness. They're all 1.7mm thick or a 53.5 size. I'm using a 54mm portafilter (as I'm sure you know with Barista Express).

Did you also use the same basket?

that's a Pro Breville I believe

I use both. But using a puck screen absolutely does help give a more even pre infusion. Even with a ims shower head the puck screen makes a big difference.

It would be interesting if you first fine tuned your process perhaps basing it on what other experts are saying about eliminating puck problems. That “messy” puck in the no screen test shows there’s something that needs to be addressed in the process. Once you get that mess out, you can repeat the test and get better results with the screen.

Why compare a shot with 2 different types of portafilters, if you wish to show the difference between with and without a puck screen? Doesn't a bottomless portafilter make a difference as well?

using puck screen has to reduce the coffee dose, change the brewing pressure, also would damage the shower screen. Never try it again.
