I'm only 20, but I actually agree with you too. My parents told me about the 80s and before. Society was like a community for the most part, nowadays we're all too busy arguing over political this and social that, and even with a million words, can't come to a level ground... I wish I could have seen the era before the heat of it. So please hold onto your memories of the past, they are priceless. My parents are your age though, and I'm so lucky to have them, your guys' generation is awesome. :3

Yeah I do agree with that forsure, but the only other version that's good as well, would be the one they did after this one in 1989, just before the 1990's. It does have a Good up Beat Tempo to it. Listen to it if you haven't.

He did two takes. The first take was recorded too loudly by engineer Stuart Bruce that it ended up sounding distorted, so Phil recorded the second take that made it to the record (as well as some extra drum bits that ended up on Trevor Horn's 12" remix).

I’m reading all these wonderful comments from people like myself who truly appreciate what the 80’s meant. I was 15 during Christmas of 84. My life during that beautiful decade is what crafted me to the person I am. I wouldn’t change anything. I miss that decade with all my heart and soul. So many places paved over or torn down, parents passed, friends no longer here. But your comments let me know I am not the only person who was there and loved what we had. You all let me know that yes, yes indeed, it was special.

I truly feel your comment. I was 16 Christmas 1984. When I hit 50 I finally understood, that "home" is always a very specific moment in time. I can hardly watch those old videos without feeling a strong feeling of loss. They remind me of a wholesome feeling that got lost along the way and a home that hasn't been since then.

I'm from Ethiopia but what does it mean when he said that
@m.i.t.h.
@m.i.t.h. 23 күн бұрын
@@Chatstories_6 It has many meanings. It means that sometimes the hurt that comes from seeing someone in need is so deep that you feel helpless trying to help them. You compare their state of living to your own and it makes you sad beyond words. It leaves you realizing that if it were you, you wouldn't have survived. It also is calling out many of the people who brush aside the fact that others are in pain. It calls them out on the privilege that many people have of not knowing what it is like to suffer in that way. Most of all, it reminds us all of how gifted we are and what truly matters in life. It reminds us to care for each other and give back our gifts in life to those that don't have it as good as we do. This phrase is very deep for those who read into it deeply. However, just like most good things in life, I can also understand how at first glance this phrase may appear intimidating and can be easily misunderstood. The complexity of this turn of phrase is exactly why it is so emotionally powerful.
@gksmith-mccarthy979
@gksmith-mccarthy979 23 күн бұрын
I understand the spirit of what they meant, and they probably had to make it rhyme, but for some reason that line never set well with me. No one should be grateful that something bad is happening to anyone. But again, I get the spirit of what they meant. With today's AI, they probably could've come up with something else that was less "either-or."
@m.i.t.h.
@m.i.t.h. 23 күн бұрын
@@gksmith-mccarthy979 I get what you're saying, but for me it's the intent behind it that matters. I feel as though language in general can always be reframed as a negative, but in this case I feel that by framing the situation in a way where the listener can imagine swapping their life with someone else's is exactly what made the song and what it was trying to accomplish so successful. If it hadn't been framed as an either or, the average listener would not have been put into an empathetic head space that really helped them to understand the gravity of what was being proclaimed. I feel that if the words had been more tender then they wouldn't have been effective. So many people out there who view people as not working hard enough instead of understanding that struggling are so much more complicated would not necessarily listen nor understand if it wasn't explained in such a rudimentary crass way. The beauty of this line is that it took people who could care less or were unaware and made it so that they did care and it was a big deal to them. In other words, the imperfections of this line are exactly what made the whole song relatable for so many people. If it were "tonight thank God the one suffering isn't you" the line would come across as dismissive. By phrasing it with interchangeable roles and making the situation reflexive it made an impact. Sure, the phrasing is a bit rough, but that's the appeal. This line isn't supposed to feel good, it is supposed to hurt. It is supposed to take a sweet song and by itself turn the whole thing bittersweet. One line that changed the whole song and took it from idealistic and unattainable to painful and relatable. It isn't saying well, someone has to be miserable because we all know that while misery is a reality of life, we don't want anyone to be miserable. That is already a given that is understood by everyone. It is about being grateful and looking up, not about throwing someone down into a pit. This line guides the listener into the correct perspective of how to interpret the song because if you have the incorrect perspective it doesn't sound right, but if you listen from the head space of the writer, it is beautiful and life changing. That line gives you the instructions of how to listen to the song, because if you view it any other way, the line no longer makes sense.

You're right to be proud. :') I'm from a poor country (Guatemala), and I can say that this kind of empathetic sensibility and solidarity is relatively rare in people who haven't lived in precarious conditions... And these young British had the merit to be the first musicians and singers to take this kind of initiative. 💖

People cared more about each other and communities were strong. Children and teenagers had so much freedom. I really appreciate all the great times we had.

I am living my life in the present, but the music today cannot compare in any aspect to the music from the past century and that's the fact, stated not by us on YT but many eminent musicians. No need to say more, just read the comments here and you will find that there ain't many of those who share your opinion about the "early 2000s vibe". Like I stated: not even close.
