I'm from Ethiopia but what does it mean when he said that
@m.i.t.h.23 күн бұрын
@@Chatstories_6 It has many meanings. It means that sometimes the hurt that comes from seeing someone in need is so deep that you feel helpless trying to help them. You compare their state of living to your own and it makes you sad beyond words. It leaves you realizing that if it were you, you wouldn't have survived. It also is calling out many of the people who brush aside the fact that others are in pain. It calls them out on the privilege that many people have of not knowing what it is like to suffer in that way. Most of all, it reminds us all of how gifted we are and what truly matters in life. It reminds us to care for each other and give back our gifts in life to those that don't have it as good as we do. This phrase is very deep for those who read into it deeply. However, just like most good things in life, I can also understand how at first glance this phrase may appear intimidating and can be easily misunderstood. The complexity of this turn of phrase is exactly why it is so emotionally powerful.
@gksmith-mccarthy97923 күн бұрын
I understand the spirit of what they meant, and they probably had to make it rhyme, but for some reason that line never set well with me. No one should be grateful that something bad is happening to anyone. But again, I get the spirit of what they meant. With today's AI, they probably could've come up with something else that was less "either-or."
@m.i.t.h.23 күн бұрын
@@gksmith-mccarthy979 I get what you're saying, but for me it's the intent behind it that matters. I feel as though language in general can always be reframed as a negative, but in this case I feel that by framing the situation in a way where the listener can imagine swapping their life with someone else's is exactly what made the song and what it was trying to accomplish so successful. If it hadn't been framed as an either or, the average listener would not have been put into an empathetic head space that really helped them to understand the gravity of what was being proclaimed. I feel that if the words had been more tender then they wouldn't have been effective. So many people out there who view people as not working hard enough instead of understanding that struggling are so much more complicated would not necessarily listen nor understand if it wasn't explained in such a rudimentary crass way. The beauty of this line is that it took people who could care less or were unaware and made it so that they did care and it was a big deal to them. In other words, the imperfections of this line are exactly what made the whole song relatable for so many people. If it were "tonight thank God the one suffering isn't you" the line would come across as dismissive. By phrasing it with interchangeable roles and making the situation reflexive it made an impact. Sure, the phrasing is a bit rough, but that's the appeal. This line isn't supposed to feel good, it is supposed to hurt. It is supposed to take a sweet song and by itself turn the whole thing bittersweet. One line that changed the whole song and took it from idealistic and unattainable to painful and relatable. It isn't saying well, someone has to be miserable because we all know that while misery is a reality of life, we don't want anyone to be miserable. That is already a given that is understood by everyone. It is about being grateful and looking up, not about throwing someone down into a pit. This line guides the listener into the correct perspective of how to interpret the song because if you have the incorrect perspective it doesn't sound right, but if you listen from the head space of the writer, it is beautiful and life changing. That line gives you the instructions of how to listen to the song, because if you view it any other way, the line no longer makes sense.
@cazibby22 күн бұрын
@@gksmith-mccarthy979 Bono hated saying it, he was really against it, but they pointed out that it would be the line that hit people, so he said it... and it is the line that hits, but it makes me DEEPLY uncomfortable... which means it works? Keeps you thinking?
