Hello from my fish room channel in Chicago, where I just subscribed to yours. I run air stones at night on some of my tanks just to be safe. I'm not sure the science but the movement can't hurt.

Welcome in, I'll return the favor. If I recall simply put the science is plants produce oxygen during the day, and tend to consume it during the night, which is why i ended up putting the air stone in at all.

I ran a tank without air when breeding guppies. I added an air stone, then switched it out for a sponge filter. If I am running air, I might as well run a filter.

Yup, you are right, generally speaking that is exactly what I would do, however this is the only tank I run, ....or rather one of two that I run which has a canister filter, to which adding in a sponge filter would just take up more room, and not really accomplish much else.

Tank is looking great. Congratulations on the fry. I have to ask you what's the purpose of the air being turn on and off every 8 seconds? Not saying its bad or good just curious. TIA. Thanks for sharing

I found at night when the lights were off, when the plants are now using the oxygen not producing it, occasionally a couple of the female would surface breathe, so.i suspect the oxygen levels at times during the night were.likely.low. once I put the air stone in that behavior stopped.

@FishScalesAndShrimpTales I got that. So why not just leave it on all the time? Is it maybe cause of the plants? Getting beat up

Ah, gotcha, tbh it's 2 things, one it's beside my work desk so it's a matter of noise, and two, I have no lid on this tank as yet, and I hate cleaning the light above the bubbler all the time. 😁
