I got a replacement battery which was 3V, right diameter, but wouldn't work when inserted. Turns out it's fractionally thinner than the 2032 type that's needed (what I had was 2035). Picking up the idea from this video, I inserted a thin piece of cardboard between the plastic and the two metal prongs that contact the positive side. This was enough to push the prongs down by a fraction of a millimetre - now battery connects, and all works. So watch out for battery type that looks right but is a shade too thin - a fix like this will deal with it though.

I tried this. Made SURE top & bottom contacts had a firm grip on the battery. I have several of the same tuners and swapped the battery sled & battery and the issue stayed with the dead unit. opened it up and sprayed it with contact cleaner, let it dry and still dead. Tuner worked for about a year and died. Never left the house, looks new.

Yes this did it! I like a dummy put a new battery in first then the carrier, which broke it. First I thought I shorted it out but after hearing this I took a look and could not see any bottom pins. I couldn't see how to bend them up either so I took the case apart. Remove the little tiny screw at the edge in the battery compartment then pry the case apart. There's a notch for a dime or screwdriver. The only loose part was the button pad. The neg connection is 2 tiny fingers that point away from the direction the battery slides in. Still hard to see because of the pos connection is right over it. Magnifying class and a good light help. I used a heavy safety pin to bend both up. Tested it with it still apart and it works. Take the battery out. align the button pad, snap the case together, put the screw then battery back in and good as new.

I use the end of a round wood toothpick, as it's less likely to damage anything inside the tuner. This is the right idea in general, though. Some videos suggest inserting a piece of metal foil between the battery and clip, but it seems to me this could cause unanticipated short circuits. ;?)
@livefree68787 жыл бұрын
+zeppy13131 It is absolutely possible for the aluminum foil to cause a short, if it wraps around the battery in anyway. If the battery is loose and not making a connection, Reforming the spring will be necessary. I can see a toothpick working to re-create the spring.

Evidently Snarks are designed for CR2032 batteries, which are slightly thicker than CR2016 or CR2025 batteries. That's most likely why the pins would not be making contact with the battery.

its in the snark clip on tuner that some guitars cant be tuned using it mine was easy to tune till i polished the fretboard in that lemon oil thing now it cant be tuned as i think this fretboard oil dampens out the vibrations that travel though the neck so the tuner can't register it best use the plug in tuner

I have the SS Model Snark and mine did the same thing. I watched a couple of these videos and having experience with audio electral engineering. I felt it was worth opening to see how it worked and if I could fix it. I opened it and saw the solution. There is a piezo element touching a spring that registers the vibration's frequency to microprocessor on the PCB. The spring's center goes over a raised plastic cylinder that is only about a few millimeters tall. This holds it in place. I guess since these are economical tuners. If you're a little too rough with them the spring can pop off of it and/ or the piezo element can lose its adhesive from excessive heat and move out of place. These two parts are the only way it can read a strings vibration and convert it into a frequency to be read by the microprocessor. It reminds me of economy guitar effect pedals such as Beherger. The circuit design and components on par with other brands. They save money by using cheap plastic enclosures and prephiferials that control the analog actions such as varible resistance.

Nope. This thing reminds me of the old armatron digital watches in the '70s. Once the battery went dead you had about a 30% chance that replacing the battery would make it work again. Most of them just got thrown away after the first battery died. Looks like that's a situation here. At least in my case. 😏 When I bought mine I'll be at a while back, I remember some of the reviewers talking about once the battery dies it'll probably never work again. Looks like some of those guys were right. For what it's worth one of my hobbies is repairing mid-70s Hi-Fi systems, replacing capacitors, using deoxys on worn switches etc. This shark's not worth the work it's just time to get a new tuner in my case.

Just FYI... everyone. IF, any of you are using "Button" batteries, such as the 2032, 2016, etc, etc... and they are of "Asian" decent from the El Cheapo stores ($Tree, DG, etc, etc.)... beware, the "loose" connection is NOT necessarily the fault of any of the Snark Tuners, or similar that use these types of batteries. If you take a pair of Calipers and measure the "thickness" of the battery.. using either a Caliper made of Plastic (or a composite), or use a "Dead" Battery, so as Not to short out a "good" battery using metal Calipers.... you will invariably discover that the "el cheapo" Button Batteries, can be anywhere from .002 to .003 thousandths THINNER than comparative "Name Brand" Button Batteries... that is enough of a difference to NOT make a good contact in the Tuner or other device using similar batteries. It's Not "just" the thickness vs contact problem, but that slight difference of thinness in those el-cheapo batteries "can" also mean a shorter life span compared to batteries from Energizer, Duracell, Sony, etc, etc, etc.
