So the increase in power makes a lot of sense. The bigger battery has more to give, and the leaf blower took advantage of that, drawing more power and as a result, more blowing. The 12ah also fits all the tools that can hold the larger 6ah battery. Older 40 volt tools, like my lawn mower that uses the smaller batteries won't fit this in without modification. Awesome video!

Ryobi needs to vent these batteries. They take forever to cool down. I never have that problem with my Greenworks batteries.

I think you should retry the test on the lowest setting of the leaf blower. The 12aH battery can provide more amperage, so the BMS is allowing more amperage.

Simplifying the electrical behind bigger battery = bigger power, its about the discharge rate of the cells. Obviously you have double the Ah, but they don't actually publish the current ratings. For all the math I'm going to use the 36V that these batteries actually are. The 6Ah is a 216Wh battery (36V x 6Ah) and the 12Ah is a 432Wh (36V x 12Ah). Now take the run time of 14 minutes on the 6Ah and you get approximately 926W average of power draw from the 6Ah battery, which at 36V means an average of 25.7A. The 12Ah with 24 minutes results in 1,080W, which is exactly 30A average. The main thing that would allow this is thermals and chemistry. If the BMS knows how much current it can safely dump and the temp allows it, its going to allow the current to flow. As things start to heat up, the BMS will reel back voltage to limit power. The BMS on the 6Ah probably has a target of about 26A max, and the voltage will drop faster as the battery depletes. The 12 gets to hit at higher power longer as it simply has more capacity, also allowing more power to flow. If you want a true capacity test, you have to use a fixed wattage load through the 300w inverter so the BMS is no longer dictating current draw. The only thing the BMS will do there is monitor temps.

The 12ah battery looks larger than the 6ah. Will it fit is closed off battery compartments in tools like in the walk behind 40v mowers and 40v power cleaner?

@@livefreeandtoolon My dad has an older style 40v walk behind mower. You can only fit the older shorter batteries in the compartment. The first 6ah batteries would not fit.

It was immediately obvious to me that the 12 ah was putting out more power than the 6 ah. Even though it did not last quite twice as long as the 6ah it also seems to me to be worth buying the 12 ah as opposed to two 6ah batteries. I use mine in a backpack leaf blower but more often in my 16" or 14" chainsaws. Thanks for the demonstration.

Simplified, voltage is power Ah is runtime. If nothing else changes, a 12Ah battery would last twice as long as a 6Ah connected to the same load at constant current. 6Ah means that the battery can run on a device that pull 6A for an hour, 2 hours on a device that only pulls 3A, etc. Watts (Voltage times Current) has nothing to do with it either. A device uses whatever current the device is designed to use. It has an internal resistance that limits the current that motor can use. The batteries themselves have an internal resistance that becomes part of the circuit. The smaller packs (that you used) have a higher internal resistance than the larger packs due to the the number of batteries and how they are wired together (and the type of battery). Because the internal resistance is less, and the load is distributed across more batteries, there is less voltage drop under load (higher current draw). So the higher Ah battery pack will maintain a higher voltage and be able to deliver more power when using something like a blower that is drawing a high current.

I have the backpack blower with two six amp hour batteries and I can tell you that on turbo it's about the same time. I get about 25 minutes

My guess is the 6ah battery is a 18650 battery pack which are smaller and 12ah battery is 21700 cells which has larger capacity and longer length but, also can output much more amps.

What's interesting is you brag about that blower being the most powerful Ryobi makes knowing full well that the backpack blower is more powerful. You know this because you tested them and The backpack Blower was clearly more powerful despite ryobi's marketing. That being said I only put that out there because it was your video that made me choose the backpack. Another thing I wanted to point out is with two 6 amp hour batteries batteries in my backpack Blower I get 25 minutes on turbo. That puts me within 1 minute from what you got with the single 12ah. Great video. Love your content.

Wish Home Depot would sell the 12ah . I guess you have to buy that 80 volt mower to get them . I’m going to assume ryobi is using 21700 cells. The most ah they could currently make with 5000mah cells is about a 15ah battery so that could be in the near future . I’m sure once CATL comes out with the 500 wh/kg battery tech we may see a 20ah battery at the same size of the 12ah . Battery tech is looking great

i wish i could afford a 12ah , got any spares lol? It takes me 2 days to push mow my front and back yard with a 6ah and a 4h having to stop and charge in between, I work a lot and my back yard can get a foot or more by the time im able to mow, and i do mow on the lowest setting, so it goes through the batteries pretty quick.

I would love to see a test with ryobi’s Inverta taking a product Say 100 W lightbulb and see how long the six amp hour runs it and then see how long for six amp hour batteries run it and then how long 12 amp hour battery will run it and then how long for 12 amp hour batteries would want it that would be the most amazing test you could do

@Live Free and Tool On not trying to be picky, but at 1lb 13oz, the 12ah is 3oz short of being 2lbs heavier than the 6ah. Hopefully you don't have to use it on turbo mode a lot because 15 minutes isn't much run time. Blowers are something that battery power still can't touch gas. Gas runs several times that of a battery powered.
@mw0099

True battery blowers can't touch petrol for runtime, but they're worth it for being much quieter IMO. I have that same blower and I rarely need to use it at full power

6AH 4# 12AH 5#13oz weighing about "a pound difference". Hey dude, that's more than 1.75# difference! I suppose a shoulder harness isn't necessary for a few to carry the extra 1.75# for a meager 24 minutes, Then you hit the nail straight, sadly not quite clearly emphasized, it's the wattage for those Gamers that didn't hear it.

I asked for a replacement almost 5 months ago after registering the big tiller and finding one battery didn't charge, still no battery and it's spring. What a hassle! I estimate at this point 15 hours and 15 bucks my cost where checking before packing would cost Ryobi about 4 min and 4 bucks, for 4 batteries. Or half that, with two double chargers on the bench. I don't understand it. Cheers.
