I am a cellist of 7 years, and WOW do I love this guy! Blues cello should be way more common than it is. I’m trying to learn this on my cello, and it’s pretty tricky to pick out what he’s playing but it’s sounding cool so far. Anyways, love love LOVE this version of this song.

She is a National treasure. Her incredible voice and musicianship. The way her music shows deep reverence for the traditions of the past while looking to the future. A lot of American roots music is starting to (or already has) disappeared, and we are blessed to have someone like miss Giddens to help remember the past while forging a path forward.

Loved you in the CCD. Had the privilege of meeting you, your family, and your great band in DC at my friend’s house in DC many years ago on your way to collect your Grammy. That was a fun night. Will always remember playing slide with Dom on the bones. Your voice is velvet.

lyrics: Hades, Hades Hear my petition please My name is Ulysses I seek to bury my fractured memories In the war, in the war The horrors that I saw Saddled grief to my core I can't take it any more Ulysses, Ulysses You come here on your knees Begging for my release But I warn you it ain't that easy In your mind, in your mind The horrors are too entwined The only peace you will find Is in the refuge you yourself designed Hades, Hades I guess you managed to catch me My name is Heracles I was sent here your dog to seize Of my tasks, of my tasks This was to be the last But I know there's more they'll ask So if you're going to kill me, do it fast Heracles, Heracles You're tired that's plain to see I might just set you free But you gotta do one thing for me I'm inclined, I'm inclined To send you to a friend of mine He's got a job I think you'll find Will pay the debt to which you've resigned Hades, Hades Hear my reprise Drifting gently on the breeze As I beg for my true love's reprieve All are hushed, all are hushed For the song of Orpheus On my own I am lost I need my love back, whatever it costs Orpheus, Orpheus You bring your song to us I can release a mind if I must You've got the payment required I trust You are poor, you are poor What you need you can't afford But if you can thrive outside the law I know a job that pays what you need and more Hades, Hades, to your terms I will agree I'll find the vault I'll do the job happily I'll find the money for my love Then I shall be free e

Giddens is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, and studied opera. Her vocal accuracy is unimpeachable and this performance is lovely, the band is great. I may have to look for some of her CCD performances to try to find out what her "own" voice sounds like. This one here is pleasantly soulful with a few accents in interesting places. I'm still a fan of stage or studio performances where performers don't aim for perfection, but inject some of themselves into the work, instead of just their music college chops, but I guess artists are delivering what the typical audience expects or even demands. That said, this is a splendid performance.

I just want to know why she changed "sun" to "stars" in the depot verse. Original says "sun", it rhymes, and she's looking at the sun to check the time...baffling change to "stars", but I wonder if there is a reason?

I love the song, but I just don't like how this lady interprets it. It lacks simplicity. She sings well, but it's just a bit too much. too loud, too many effects.
