@@jjbentley9 I did get my transplant! My surgery was on October 31st, fitting enough considering I woke up with about a dozen IV lines feeding directly into my jugular; I bore a striking resemblance to Medusa 🥳. My transplant was done by living donor so I was only on the list for as long as it took to find someone with matching cellular markers who could donate enough tissue to get me healthy again. I was seeking a donor for around 9 months before my transplant team located my match. He’s married to a good friend of mine. He was in hospital for about two weeks, recovered at home for about three more weeks and then went back to work. I was in hospital for three weeks after the surgery but in and out since about a week ago; my surgical and liver teams have since realized that I was quite a bit more ill than they initially believed. My physiology looked at the list of complications and began treating it like a bucket list. I had a wound infection, blood clots, chest pain, drug allergies, internal bleeding and fluid accumulation, the list goes on. We had to live away from home for nearly 3 months. It is a major surgery with major risks of complications; none of what’s happened is anyone’s fault, it was the risk I took agreeing to the surgery. You pay up front for big reward later in any transplant surgery. Are you waiting for a transplant?

@@jjbentley9 I think it was about a year before I received my transplant. This March 2023 will be my sixth year post transplant, every three months I go and get my Labs done locally and they are sent to Emory and if everything is OK I won’t hear from them. I still take low doses of Tacrolimus (Prograf) and I will for the rest of my life.

@@jjbentley9 You can do this! There will be hard days and you will hate protein supplements/powder/drinks/bars/snacks/etc. because they will make you eat so much high protein food afterwards but you can DEFINITELY do this. Feel free to reach out with any questions. I just got home after 3 months of recovery in UC’s program at the Aurora CO campus. I can send you a packing list 🙂 whatever you need, dude!

Grateful, Grateful, Grateful!!! For the entire liver and kidney team/staff at Emory. July of 2016 I was given a second chance at life. I can't describe the amount of relentless effort, compassion and dedication of the physicians, surgeons, nurses and team at Emory. I'll never forget that life changing moment and I live everyday with much gratitude. Its truly a blessing to be able to live a comfortable life again. I pray for healing for all.

What a beautiful story. The MARS machine is amazing. I'm coming up on my 10 year liver transplant date. The MARS machine wasn't available then. I have a dear friend that needs a type O kidney right now and is about to have his intake appointment at Emory. The donation of life is the greatest gift you could ever give.

I had my surgery about a year-and-a-half ago and I feel better than I've ever felt in my entire life. I hope all your families experienced the same results. Going through liver failure it's just awful for everyone involved and I'm so sorry you all had to experience this.

How much total cost of liver transplant?
@beckybell4900
@beckybell4900 3 жыл бұрын
That's hard to say. When I had my transplant, they would not even talk to me unless I had insurance. At the time, I had Florida Blue which is an insurance for low income people. It paid almost every bit of my surgery. So you don't have to have an expensive insurance. I guestimate the surgery and hospital care before and after was close to a million dollars. I was in the hospital 4 months though because I had other issues.
