I was at this game. Liverpool were a really good side under Roy Evans with the likes of Fowler, McManaman & Collymore. McAteer & Stig were great full backs going forward. Liverpool should have won the league this season. As good an all round striker as Fowler was, he played a lot of this season upfront on his own, 18 Premier League goals compared with 28 the season before, Collymore seemed less interested this season and not to mention that Liverpool were very edgy at the back and James made a number of high profile mistakes.

I was at this game. I wouldnt say that McAteer and Stig were great full backs(in fact Roy used them as wing backs, with three centre backs). Yes, we were good going forward, but it was the spine of the team which lets us down. When you read what Souness says in the book, Men in White Suits, such as the revelation that Eric Cantona was recommended to him and that a certain Peter Shemicheal wrote to the culb asking for a trial, makes me wonder how thing would have possibly turned out if Roy had been offered the job after Kenny quit in 1991.

@@DavidSmith-fs5qj I think wing backs is what I really mean. McAteer and Stig created a lot of chances and goals. I think the problem with Liverpool is Souness tried to change too much, too quickly and all the injuries didn't help. I was at uni in 2000 and a personal trainer did a talk and told us that he advised Souness against the way the players were training. Serious injuries to the likes of Whelan, McMahon, Barnes, Rush etc. Liverpool were a great team in 1990 and had Kenny stayed, I think Liverpool would have remained a top team. In 1990-1991 season, Liverpool were missing McMahon and Whelan for so much of the season and that was so costly. Selling Beardsley and later Houghton were bad moves. Should have been kept on for at least 2 or 3 seasons.

Inconsistent though they were, the Liverpool passing game under Roy Evans was great to watch. I would love to have seen Roy play Berger, Fowler and Collymore together in a three pronged attack! Steve McManaman in midfield with Michael Thomas (or maybe even Jason McAteer?) playing the 'holding role' and either Barnes or Redknapp being the other creative midfielder.

I cant believe Thomas was still at us in 96. I can remember in great detail his winner against Villa in the quarter Final, him bursting from the midfield taking on the entire Utd team to set up Walters on the last day of the season and his cup final wonder goal all in his first season But can't recall anything from him after that

He was actually one of Liverpool's better players but I personally think Roy Evans held a grudge from 1989. I saw him live many times between 1995 and 1997. His intelligence in midfield, engine, passing, tackling complimented John Barnes much better than Jamie Rednapp. The 1990s was a lost decade for Liverpool Football Club due to bad decisions made by board and managers.

Not quite sure what you mean by 'crazy gang version 2.0'. Yeah, Dennis Wise was as feisty as ever but any resemblance to Wimbledon's uncompromising style had gone years before when Mick Harford or Tony Cascarino were leading the attack. The club had been playing much more so-called 'cultured' football from when Glenn Hoddle took over in 1993. The 1994 Cup Final line-up was like we'd recruited a load of diddy-men, with Stein, Peacock and John Spencer in attack joining Wise. So no route one football then. But Yes, talented though inconsistent. This season, 96-97, under Ruud Gullit, they started to get their act together with the odd aberration like this game, becoming rarer. They did beat Liverpool twice at Stamford Bridge during this campaign, including a famous comeback in the FA Cup, which they would go on to win.

Lee Akers I’m not Chelsea fan but they were pretty successful around this period. Won 2 FA cups in 4 finals between 1996-2002, the Cup winners cup, the super cup against Madrid, finished 4 points off of the title in 98/99 and got to the QFs in their first appearance in the CL losing in extra time against Barcelona. They also beat the statistically the best PL team of all time up to that point (1999/00 United) 5-1
