If Liverpool thrashed ManUtd and went on to win the competition it would've probably had the effect on ManUtd that you unsuccessfully wanted this 1-4 to have but this is 1of the thrashings I least cared about. The Newcastle 5-0 Oct1996 hurt at the time but that's because it was much earlier in the season & unexpected as ManUtd had good recent record vs Newcastle even after Shearer chose Newcastle over ManUtd they still got embarrassed by ManUtd in the shield 4-0 so you wouldn't have expected the first league meeting vs Newcastle to be a 5-0 defeat but it ended up being as pointless as this 1-4 thrashing and Newcastle's trophy pursuit still continues to this day. But I'd still understand people watching highlights of the Newcastle game because it at least momentarily had some effect on ManUtd & the fans where as this never did at any point. Liverpool deliberately match fixing vs Chelsea the following season to deny ManUtd a deserved 4 in a row hurt 99.9% more than this game.

Interesting how players tried beating their man more, and went long more, encouraging much more turnovers of play (and often making decent chances from going long). No denying the technical quality is better now, but I'd argue with everyone playing possession football, no one being allowed to risk a dribble without their manager hooking them off the pitch, that football was much more entertaining back then.

Liverpool, Arsenal and obviously City are all much better teams than they were at this point in time and all play much better football. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid were a bit crap at this point too, Bayern weren't vintage last season but much better than they were in the late 2000's where they spent time in the UEFA Cup and didn't even win it. Madrid got humped 5-0 by Liverpool on aggregate a few days before this game against Utd too, they'd turn it around shortly afterwards with signing Ronaldo, but even that took a few years to turn them into a CL winning team. People whack the nostalgia goggles on for this point in time, some teams were much better than they are now, others were much worse, some parts of the game were better, others were worse, that's the way it's always been really. The league was also full of dinosaur managers like Megson, Allardyce (though he was ahead of his time when it came to stats), Pulis, Pardew, Moyes, Hodgson, Bruce etc in these years, you don't see many managers like that now, almost everyone tries to actually play attacking football.

You can't tell me that Jota is better technically then Torres, or that Szbozlai is technically better than Gerrard. the game is just played differently now. wingers score more now than center forwards, with different formations. But also Klopp didn't play controlling football either. Liverpool barely got a clean sheet last season (2023-2024)

Even in a 4-1 drubbing, you could see how poor Lucas Leiva was. He was weak, slow, no imagination and no shot. Constantly getting beat and letting his man run onto our goal unopposed.
