Discounting his statistics he was seminal in the most important games he was involved in, whether that be the champions League final, F.A cup or carrying a frankly weak side to top four with match winning performances against the likes of Charlton. Not sure what English player comes near to him, the closest I could probably think of is Scholes but even by his own admission he didn't think he was on Gerrard's level so I think calling the claim 'ridiculous' is a bit odd to say the least.
