In this video, Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi continues to cover the assassination of Uthman Ibn 'Affan [r] by discussing the various groups that came from Egypt, Kufa and elsewhere, how Uthman [r] met their demands, and finally, how a letter was fabricated against Uthman [r] in order to attempt his resignation.
A summary of topics covered are as follows:
A large group came from Egypt, another group Kufa and others from Basra, AsSham, etc, also joined. The mob mentality increased as they approached the Khalifa.
They met Uthman at the outskirts of Medina (Dhil Marwa) and petitioned with a number complaints. They referenced Verse Yunus:59, "Say, did Allah give you permission or are you lying against Allah?" This ayah was revealed regarding Pegans worshiping false gods but they asked about his policies instead. These new converts arrogantly presumed they are more knowledgeable of the Qur'an than the Sahaba [r].
This was also the beginnings and symptoms of Kharijite Islam. Some of the killers of Uthman [r] were, in fact, in the ranks of the Kharijites several years later.
Initially they complained about political issues, later came personal attacks.
Uthman [r] even asked them who they wanted as a governor and that he'd make the change. Uthman [r] sent Ali [r] to negotiate. They wanted: 1) Wealth to be distributed more equally and justly. 2) Exiled members to be returned 3) Employ only trustworthy governors. Ali [r] negotiated on behalf of Uthman [r] and rebels were given all of these things.
So the delegates (rebels) agreed to go back to their cities.
Then they saw a rider flee their camps. They captured him and the rider confessed he's a secret messenger for Uthman [r] to the current (soon-to-be replaced) governor of Egypt. The letter included the actual seal (ring) of Uthman and mentioned that when this delegation returns to Egypt, they should be punished, killed, etc.
There are three positions on this:
a) Letter is authentic - Shi'a groups take this position. Sunnis refute, since Uthman [r] swore by Allah that this letter is fabricated. Plus, Uthman [r] refused to unsheathe his sword.
b) The cousin of Uthman [r] , Marwan Ibn AlHakam, likely had access to Uthman's seal and wrote the letter. It's possible he had best of intentions and wanted to punish the rebels. However, this does not seem to make sense due to Marwan's track record and character either.
Who benefits? What is the motif?
c) Someone from the rebels did this. Uthman [r] had lost his ring and leaders do not send actual seal/ring in messages. This was meant to rile up the rebels and supporters further.
Medina could have defended Uthman [r] , but the rebel size was sizable and not insignificant.
Rebels approached Medina to the house of Uthman [r]. Uthman swore against writing the letter. As well, he asked for 2 witnesses who saw him write the letter, or his oath and swearing against it should be sufficient [fiqh principle/rule based on hadith]. The rebels were silenced by this but settled outside of his large house, situated near the Baqi' and the Prophet [s]' masjid.
The siege lasted 40+ days, and others came into town and joined. They demanded nothing less than Uthman [r]'s resignation.
Uthman [r]'s council mostly advised him not to step down. Ibn Umar [son of last khalifa] advised "..I don't think you should take off the shirt that Allah has placed on you.." (a reference to the hadith by the Prophet [r]).
Why didn't Uthman [r] have rebels taken care of?
Because never has a Muslim been killed by another Muslim up to this point. This is why Uthman [r] refused to lift the sword on these rebels. When he heard of threats to kill him, he reflected on the hadith "life of a Muslim is not except for 3 cases, and I have not done any of these things.." He even reminded the rebels that "Do you not realize that if you shed my blood, the Ummah will never be united after this? .."

May Allah bless you for this statement. We have a lot of munaafiq in the Ummah who are not interested in their akhirah. Their main purpose is to divide the Ummah. Whoever did what has nothing to do with our akhirah it is very truth but these ruffians keep bringing this up to fuel enmity between the ummah. This is their agenda. All these people are dead and if Allah is pleased with them it doesn't matter what we think or feel here. The ummah today should focus on how to meet Allah other than fighting over insignificant issues.

Another point that supports the rebels having something to do with the fabrication of the letter is that it was a back up plan after their original plan failed. They went to Othman (r) with those unfair complaints and expected him to dismiss them and wanted to start from there, but he was very peaceful and diplomatic and did everything to quell the Fitna, and all their demands were granted to them so they had to think of something else. They wanted to make a problem anyway. Which suits the story as well because the letter and messenger story had the flaws that were discussed in this lecture. Of course this is just a theory. Allah knows best.

I came here for education but my blood begins to boil. If time machine had been a thing, I would go to Uthman's (ra.) house with a gun and say "With due respect, sir, I've never sworn allegiance to you in the first place so I don't have to listen to your orders. I'm gonna stay here and they'll have to go over my dead body to get to you"

appointing ali a.s for negotiation was the sole evidence tht the letter was from usman (r.a) , whom the rebels would be going to blame if they were to be captured back home ?

Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barkatahu, "b) ............ However, this does not seem to make sense due to Marwan's track record and character either." The above position looks bizarre when we look into Marwan Ibn AlHakam track record and character from Sahih Al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. 1) Narrated Yusuf bin Mahak: Marwan had been appointed as the governor of Hijaz by Muawiya. He delivered a sermon and mentioned Yazid bin Muawiya so that the people might take the oath of allegiance to him as the successor of his father (Muawiya). Then `Abdur Rahman bin Abu Bakr told him something whereupon Marwan ordered that he be arrested. But `Abdur-Rahman entered `Aisha's house and they could not arrest him. Marwan said, "It is he (`AbdurRahman) about whom Allah revealed this Verse:-- 'And the one who says to his parents: 'Fie on you! Do you hold out the promise to me..?'" On that, `Aisha said from behind a screen, "Allah did not reveal anything from the Qur'an about us except what was connected with the declaration of my innocence (of the slander). USC-MSA web (English) reference : Vol. 6, Book 60, Hadith 352 Arabic reference : Book 65, Hadith 4827 Read explanation of this hadith in Fath ul Bari by Ibn Hajr Al Asqalani to know what did Abdur Rahman bin Abu Bakr told him whereupon Marwan ordered that he be arrested 2) Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to proceed to the Musalla on the days of Id-ul-Fitr and Id-ul-Adha; the first thing to begin with was the prayer and after that he would stand in front of the people and the people would keep sitting in their rows. Then he would preach to them, advise them and give them orders, (i.e. Khutba). And after that if he wished to send an army for an expedition, he would do so; or if he wanted to give and order, he would do so, and then depart. The people followed this tradition till I went out with Marwan, the Governor of Medina, for the prayer of Id-ul-Adha or Id-ul-Fitr. When we reached the Musalla, there was a pulpit made by Kathir bin As-Salt. Marwan wanted to get up on that pulpit before the prayer. I got hold of his clothes but he pulled them and ascended the pulpit and delivered the Khutba before the prayer. I said to him, "By Allah, you have changed (the Prophet's tradition)." He replied, "O Abu Sa`id! Gone is that which you know." I said, "By Allah! What I know is better than what I do not know." Marwan said, "People do not sit to listen to our Khutba after the prayer, so I delivered the Khutba before the prayer." Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 956 In-book reference : Book 13, Hadith 8 USC-MSA web (English) reference : Vol. 2, Book 15, Hadith 76 Can Br.Yasir explain why people in Medina were not sitting down to listen to khutba after the Eid prayer.?? 3) It is narrated on the authority of Tariq b. Shihab: It was Marwan who initiated (the practice) of delivering khutbah (address) before the prayer on the 'Id day. A man stood up and said: Prayer should precede khutbah. He (Marwan) remarked, This (practice) has been done away with. Upon this Abu Sa'id remarked: This man has performed (his duty) laid on him. I heard the Messenger of Allah as saying: He who amongst you sees something abominable should modify it with the help of his hand; and if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue, and if he has not strength enough to do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of faith. I love these lectures by the way, , but in some ways they don't make sense. 1) Why did the Sahaba not protect Uthman man whether he liked it or not. It is about to position not about the person that must be preserved. I know that it was a different time but to allow an angry mob to surround the home of the leader of the Ummah and kill the leader of the Islamic World while everyone in Madeenah stands by and watchs sounds bizarre to me. 2) How is it that they are not allowing food and drink into the house when there are sahaba entering the house by jumping from one house to another. Couldn't food and drink be brought into the house via that way. 3) There is a report that Ali had his two sons protect Uthman. Why didn't the other side of a joint pain when it was obvious that there was a need?

Most of the sahaba were away to do hajj at the time as well. They heard about the siege and started to make their way back but by the time they got there it was too late. Plus some sahaba did try to protect him, I think Zubayr ra was one.

Subhanallah, our "FIQH" as "extracted" by "shuyukh" like Yasir Qadhi tells us that there are three occasions in which a Muslim's life can be taken: (1) execution for murder (2) stoning to death for adultery, and (3) apostasy (leaving religion and jama'ah). Allah, the Most High, has given us a Book to follow for success in both worlds, and He claims this Book to be "completely detailed (Kitaab Mufassal, 6:114)". Can ANYONE in the world quote any verse/s from this Book ordaining us to take life for the two last mentioned occasions, that is, for adultery and apostasy? If not - and certainly you can't - then fear Allah's punishment and do not ADD to Allah's Book. These two punishments are EXPLICITLY mentioned in the Torah! But the Jews do not practice them....WE DO. My question is: Are we, the Muslims, MORE JEWISH THAN THE JEWS THEMSELVES? It is simply appalling for Yasir Qadhi to call himself "academic". How can a true Muslim believe in Bukhari & Co the way he believes in the Qur'an? Next time, if someone calls Muslims "UNCIVILILIED", think about our blind-following "shuyukh" who have really Ruined our beautiful deen beyond recognition. Sad!
