Lives of Sahaba 28 - Uthman b. Affan 8 - Assassination: Finale & Aftermath - Yasir Qadhi

Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi cover the final moments of the assassination of Uthman Ibn 'Affan [r] and an analysis of the immediate aftermath that followed.
-The siege continued for 30-40 days and the rebels wanted Uthman [r] to a) step down and b) give himself up for wanting to murder them or c) fight to his death.
-Uthman [r] asked: "On what basis are you fighting me?" They quoted the Qur'an "Permission has been given to those who have been wronged that they fight.." and they said "you have wronged us so we are fighting you." Uthman [r] explained that this verse was in reference to the Quraysh persecuting the Muslims in Makkah. This is similar to radical groups today who take Quranic verses out of context.
Uthman [r] mentioned and reminded the rebels several things:
a) He climbed the mountain of Uhud with the Prophet [famous hadith]
b) When Uthman [r] financed the battle of Tabuk, the Prophet said "nothing can touch Uthman [r] after this..."
c) The very place where the rebels were praying, Uthman [r] had purchased it for the Prophet [s]
d) "How can you deprive me of water, when I was the one who gave Muslims water by purchasing Bir Rumah [well]"
e) "Oh people, do not kill me, as I am a brother and a leader and I only want what is best for the Ummah. But if you kill me, you shall never be a Jamah together again, nor shall you fight behind one flag again, nor shall you ever divide the booty together again. I beg you not to kill me not for me, but for the sake of the Ummah"
-Abdullah Ibn Salam and Ibn Umar were among those who suggested not fighting.
-Other sahaba asked for permission to fight the rebels but Uthman [r] continued to make his famous remark "I shall not be the first person to shed the blood of the Muslims"
-These sahaba also suggested Uthman [r] should flee secretly to Makkah.
-Ali [r] attempted to visit, but was blocked by the rebels.
-Ka'b ibn Malik and Zayd ibn Thaabit said "we will show you that we are the Ansar, we were the Ansar of Allah before and we shall be Ansar again"
-Several sahaba slept in same house to protect Uthman [r], such as Abu Hurayra, Ibn Umar, Hassan ibn Ali and Marwan Ibn AlHakam [ra].
-Abu Hurayra, Hassan Ibn Ali and Abdullah Ibn Umar defended Uthman [r] and sought his permission to fight the rebels. But Uthman [r] told Abu Hurayra "would you be happy if you killed me and all of humanity?" (in reference to Quranic verse of killing all of humanity by killing even one soul)
The Prophet [s] said in a hadith that "There will be 3 trials for the Ummah, whoever has been saved from these has been saved from everything. They are a) death of the Prophet b) Dajjal and c) killing of a khalifa who is patient and clinging to the truth." It is believed this refers to Uthman [r].
Final moments:
- The night before his death, Uthman [r] saw the Prophet, Abu bakr and Umar in a dream, where the Prophet said "break your fast with us". So Uthman [r] fasted that day and told his wife Naeelah that today he would meet the Prophet.
-On Friday 12th of Dhul Hijjah, 35AH, Uthman [r] (aged 82 now) insisted all the Sahabah to leave the house (possibly with excuse of Jummuah prayer). He opened up his door and began to recite the Qur’an. The people noticed the situation and eventually started to flood his room.
-They began to get physical with Uthman [r], holding and pulling his beard and eventually striking him with a stick. One person struck Uthman [r] with a sword, which caused his hand to be cut off and blood to spill onto the verse of the Quran “Fasa Yakfikahumullah” (And Allah will take care of them for you).
-Uthman [r] said to them “Woe to you, that was the first hand that wrote down the Qur’an down” (the first scribe of the Qur’an). Naeelah, his wife, attempted to protect Uthman [r] and her fingers were also cut off. They rebels continued until a strike to Uthman [r] neck eventually killed him [r].
-The crowd dispersed immediately amidst chaos and confusion and returned back to their origins.
-Note, none of the actual sahaba participated or approved of the killing of Uthman [r].
-Uthman [r] was buried in a secret location, near the expanded section of the Baqi’.
-The death of Uthman [r] brought about not only political chaos but theological as well. For the first time, two groups formed. They were the Khawarij and Shi’a.
-Some groups falsely accuse:
1) Aisha instigating the death of Uthman [r]. Not true, since: It was Aisha [r] that demands justice for the death of Uthman [r].
2) Ali was happy at the death of Uthman [r]. Not true, since: Ali and Hassan [ra] were defenders of Uthman [r]. Hassan was present with Uthman [r] on the day of the death.
3) Ammar ibn Yassir celebrated at Uthman [r]’s death. Not true, since: Even though he wasn’t a supporter of Uthman [r] outright, it doesn’t mean he wanted Uthman [r]’s murder. - - Copyright MIC - -

Ya Rabb I cried for Khalifah Uthman, he must be a very pure and pious soul. He did his best to avoid bloodbath among the muslims, even this meant his assassination. May Allah grant him the highest jannah, we are so small compared to his deeds.

This is so sad and sooo painful to listen to the helplessness of Uthman (R). He is not able to find any solution, he is not ready to resign or leave or give up power or assiggn or abdicate in favor of a group of sahaba. He is not even able to defend himself. No matter what the historians say, it looks like he even lost confidencee of the Sahaba in Medina.There is no doubt that he was a sincere Muslim, an honest man and a kind man and a man full of iman but sorry to say he lacked the courage and the will to defend himself or take a real extraordinay decision. Many historians, even sunni schollars have blamed Marwan for the whole disaster. I am surprised why Dr. Yasir is not accepting this. Marwan was very shrewd, cunning and opportunist which is proven by his later day becoming himself the Khalifa, and acting ruthlessly to establish his own son as the next Caliph. Also, I find Abdallah ibn Umer's advice to Uthman not really helpful which was to accept the status quo and submit himself to agitators. There was not harm if he had left the office of the Caliph and resigned. Did not Hassan bin Ali did the same thing after him? And saved the Ummah from more bloodshed. This is the standard practice in modern day democratic governments: when the people are not happy, you resign. Please forgive me if I have spoken too much, I have great respect for all the sahaba, including Uthman (r). Inspite of threat to his life, his insistance on not shedding the blood of any Muslim and accepting his shahada with great sabr is the bravest thing.

Dude did you even watch the whole video? Marwan volunteered to stay in the house of Uthman ra to protect him and fight for him. If he forged the letter why would he be willing to die over it without telling everyone he did it??? And you obviously haven't watched the other videos either, the prophet pbuh told Uthman ra that a time will come where he is pressured to step down and he should stay firm and not do it. And that's the hadith Ibn umar ra was reminding him of. He wasn't a coward, how dare you. The man fought in Uhud. He was with the Prophet pbuh from the beginning. He didn't want Muslims to fight each other. Why is such a noble idea seen as cowardly??? The man was stuck in a bad situation which BTW had been prophesied by the Prophet pbuh anyways. Seriously go watch the videos again.
