To everyone reading this for clarification: Hmong is a SUBGROUP of Miao. Miao consists of multiple subgroups such as Hmong, Hmu, Xong, and etc. with their own dialects and languages that share common traditions, culture, and languages (even though we might not understand each other to a certain degree). The Hmong/Mong people outside of China are PROBABLY descendants of the Hmong people in Yunnan province of China as they have the same or similar traditions and practices as the Hmong/Mong people outside of China. That's all I have to share. Search it up, research it up. There are lots of things I don't know, but I mostly know which is true or not through common sense and logic around these topics or any topic. If I'm not sure, I wouldn't take it as fact yet until proven. But anyways, that is all.

Coming from Hmong-American's perspective: I was taught Miao was offensive word when I was younger from the elders who became Hmong refugees from Laos Secret war and the Vietnam war. Yes, We are subgroup and part of Miao groups that CCP decide to lump us with other ethnicity& minority groups back in 1950s&1960s which I believe now in mainland china is definitely are changing as more modernize and seeing the differences between cultures and languages. After deep research on the internet and and confirm one of our own Hmong Tribes in China: Miao (苗)means in Mandarin= "Wheat Seeds". The Chinese characters of 苗 (Miao) the top of letter (One line with two little lines represent the "Ox") The bottom letter (square shape represent the fields hence the showing a picture of "fields.") I fully understand the word Miao (苗) means Wheat Seeds, and not offended anymore. The Han Chinese people acknowledge that we are first Hmong people to farm the lands in China before the Han Chinese people did. In end, we all Hmong and I hope we both Hmong from China and Hmong from other countries untied as one and shared one majority experiences. Also, Jehanne de Biolley did amazing job to study the textiles because it will bring interest from the west and let us hope the textiles can be persevere in next 100 years or so.

I was born in laos but grew up in thailand so when I went to thai school in the 1980 or 90 thai teachers still called us Miao. we have no problem with that because we didn't know who change Miao to Hmong and when and why so either name is fine with me but the word Miao is known all over Asia but Hmong is only known to the West and a few countries in south asia like vietnam laos thai and cambodia, not in Burma yet!

Thanks for sharing. I too believe that our pajntaub flowery clothes contain our history, science, mathematics and arts. I have been trying to start a charter school here in MInnesota, USA to do just that. Thanks James and the crew for sharing.

Mong was a place in the region before China. It's hard to understand but think of it as historical people like Incas or Aztec. We know they exist but have long been gone from their original location.

We used to be called Miao in thailand and laos but when vietnam and laos become French territory and control, the French wanted to divide or saperated the Miao in laos and thailand Vietnam from the Miao in china, The French rename us as Hmong not Miao anymore so that the chinese can not expand their territory toward south otherwise the chinese will go anywhere or after the Miao down south and get more land from Southeast Asia. we just change from Miao to Hmong in laos from Dr. Yang dao and couple of French missionaries with the laos govt controlled by French. my great great grandfather told us one generation to another untill now we're absolutely 100% Miao

Mong was a place that exist before China; Our ancestor are the Xiongnu/relating to the Mongols of Chinggis Khan; in fact Mong have fought in both sides of many conflicts in present day China. The 'H' was added to Hmong during the Vietnam war because we didn't want to be call Miao due to a vast minority sub-group of China. We know who we are and our path comes from north Vietnam (sapa); into Laos (XiengKhoua) and finally into the USA/France and other places around the world. We know who we are; China is still our heart

The debate whether we are Miao or Hmong which I see a lot in this vdo and others is one of contentious to me. I am one that is very passionate and hardcore and every time i heard people calling us Miao is an insult. I very much like to say to the film maker of this video that please do not call us Miao. Wherever we are on this earth we are always known as “Hmong”. Let me suggest to the film maker, please go ask the people in your film in their mother tongue what do you call yourself. Do not ask them in English or Chinese rather ask these people in their language. I bet it’s not Miao. I will defend the Hmong name to my last breath and that’s how passionate I am. Let me give you, the film maker an example . I am known as John and you always call me Jack, don’t you think that’s an insult? I’d even go further, that is derogatory. Please stop! Your film is of the highest standard but please use the “Hmong” name. We fought for our existence since the beginning of time in every country we been to is because we want to get rid of the name “Miao”. I have a dream just like MLK. That one day, you all will call us “Hmong”. Thank you!
