Great advice! I started to figure this out about a year ago. Things that were a big clue : Check not ready at the end of the night (multiple times) just come back tomorrow (I live 1:40 hours away) just mail it!? House system no maintenance done (bad cords, jacks) blown monitors ect.(I used my gear) But here are the good ones, told to stop using the load in door by the stage for one 50ft. away thru the patrons. And they cut the stairs off the stage on load in side (not kidding) so they could get a bigger MECHANICAL BULL MAT! This is the side where the system is and connects are too. But the one thing that finally broke the camels back was we want to book you all year in advance, but cancel you with 3 days or less (mostly less) notice. Oh by the way you dont get paid for those days (And dont have time to rebook it either) I said I was no longer available...

Good stuff as usual. One chain of venues I work in are a hybrid - bar/restaurant with a music venue that opens just for shows & has a bar in the venue. One of their locations has a summer series in the outside area, with no install - I cover those with a combination of their and my gear (and of course charge more than when working the built-in venue). Their performance spaces are pretty well set up & maintained, and we get to eat off the full menu so it's a pleasure to roll in for a show. Another local venue (that likes to call me up at the last minute) is a club that only opens for events, their gear is "operational" but hokey & dated so I often have to supplement their gear with some from my collection (I have a small sound company with a regular summer series for our bread&butter). They don't get a "yes" from me often both because of their setup and lack of planning...

Hi, great channel. Before march 2020 I used to be the PA and sound supplier for a small Bar with regular live music. I stayed there for a long time and the last years I was grumpy on more and more nights because nothing changed. The musicians were really good but it was the same quality all the time. I maxed out my time to quality efficiency and the technological changes I concidered to make sense. I brought in the PA system and everything at least 3 times a month (it had to stay light weight). This was my top customer because they had a second venue with the occasional small corporate event. So from the technical side and motivation wise it wasn't great but the pay, concidering the steady gig for 7 years, was good. What would you suggest for keeping that interesting? More Infos: - No space, No FOH. So when it is packed you can't really move. - I had to take down everything after the show and drive, so no drinking - in the breaks all the musicians have to talk to each other or the audience - the audience is drunk, so not good to talk to... - It's no fun to bring friends because of the take down and the fact that you have to work sometimes - Sometimes I hired someone to fill in for me when I had an other gig but then i still had to transport the system, explain everything and pay 250 - 300 bucks a night - I changed up the PA, mics and desk a few times to make it better or more efficient. I wasn't grumpy all the time and I wasn't super unhappy but still not super happy. And maybe it will come back. I'm interested in reading some opinions.

I feel like my venue is a really strange one. Its a restaurant with a bar during the day and on show nights the tables are cleared out but the motivation during the shows is 100% the music. I believe this is because the owner also owns the theater venue next door. we get nationally touring acts that might not be worth booking at the venue next door the PA is kept in great condition we have an amazing backline of amps and drum kit and if anything is broken it is no issue to get it fixed/replaced. I dont have a booth thoug so im mixing from an ipad walking around the room. Im not paid the best but my boss has said he wants to talk about a raise this week so we will see how that goes.

theres often a simple metric for this: is there a dedicated foh position? if not, the place probably doesnt put too much emphasis on the music :)

I think there is another question that can be applied to entertainment and performing arts as a whole, Is the performance the main service, or a part of a greater event or service, for example cruise ship performing arts acts or a amusement park show, vs a theatre festival or concert venue, the pros and cons dont neccesarilly apply in those cases, but knowing the difference will allow one to better deliver their service

I got really lucky and started doing sound for a band. What they have around here is bars that happen to occasionally have live music. There is one that is really good about paying the bands what they're worth, but the remaining places don't care and see it as eating into their bottom line. How about stereo vs. mono? (hopefully this isn't a war I'm unaware of) When is an appropriate time to use one over the other, or is it even appropriate? Thanks for the great info!

If at least 80% of the audience can benefit from stereo, then go for it. But tell me where these venues are because usually 70% of the audience is outside of the stereo "sweet spot".
