Antimicrobial drugs are key in the treatment of diseases, and their use is essential to protect both human and animal health. However, antimicrobials misuse in the livestock sector, aquaculture and crop production is a major concern as a risk for emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistant micro-organisms.
Before FAO started teaching commercial layer farmers in Gatundu North-Kiambu County-Kenya, farmers were fully convinced that using antibiotics was part of their trade.
Through the Livestock Farmer Field Schools (LFFS), FAO taught them on good agricultural practices and how to further reduce antimicrobial resistance by increasing farm bio-security.
The farmers learned experientially that it is possible to rear chicken without unnecessary use of drugs, reducing antimicrobial resistance in the process.
