Tanuki and racoons aren't the same thing. Not the same species at all. That's like saying red pandas are related to pandas just because they accidentally share the name panda lol (For the record, "red panda" came first so "panda" is the one that's misnamed) Tanuki and red pandas are more closely related to each other than pandas and racoons are to either of them. Because both tanuki and red pandas are closely related to foxes :3
