Just watched a recent interview (2012) with Townsend about his book, and I'm struck by how different these two men are in terms of their approach to music and the band. Perez Fecto They we’re scared of Roger. He was an alley fighter. He’s not proud of it, but Roger beat the crap out Pete and Keith on occasion. The only time I have ever heard him mention the evil disposition he had in the early days. According to Keith Moon's biography, Moon was really scared of him. He knocked Townsend out cold once. And, according to Pete, he joined Roger's band to be protected by him because he was so tough and such a good fighter. In the early days The Who was his band, and he was reputed to have "ruled it with his fists". It is amazing to me how he has matured into this genial, kind man that he seems to be today.

as he has said, Daltrey realized he needed the Who if he was going to do something more with his life than being a sheetmetal worker. A humbling realization to be sure, but he was right, just like the fact that everyone else had to be asked to join the band. Really a concerted effort to pull together to make it all work. That's probably how all bands should operate if they want to last long-term. Most have proven that they can't otherwise.

I also have a "steam phone", which is what I'm gonna call it from now on. These days it's a bit like getting your grandparents to record their stories so they don't take them with them when they go - all these autobiographies. Still as an American I am fascinated by the scene-setting that is accomplished in these books. The time(before I was born), the place(haven't got to England yet, although my maternal grand-dad was English) and the cultural scene. Being a fly on the wall is the nearest to the actual experience as I can get. So, write-on, Roger, Pete, Keith(Richards), et al. And if you all live to be 100, and I hope you do, and feel like writing supplements, I'll buy those too!

Britain has declined massively over the last 70 years or so - but in areas such as music creativity, special forces, technical innovation and financial services, we seem to have still a top place at the table. The Who were one of the fantastic by-products in music and piratical anarchy / anti-authoritarianism. Many of the Punks which came along later were just an extension of what they started. Interestingly, the left-liberal authorities / establishments of today are far more authoritarian and control focused than the old conservative establishments. Worrying trends.
