This is so helpful. We have decided to jump ship and go as tourists as we know we will get our visa after our flight reservations. We have a home we purchased and want to move into. Happy to hear it worked out for you! We're hoping for the same. I also have US food-related health issues. I began to notice that whenever we were traveling in Europe, my health improved dramatically. The food is a big incentive for our move.

Great video, thank you for your insight. We moved here for similar reasons, better health being a big one. It's funny I've only eaten fast food once or twice and was like meh, after 6 months it was so poor compared to a local burger place we have here in Guimarães. We have been here for one year now and I'm looking forward to living in more areas around Portugal soon. Até a próxima!

@americanslivinginportugal Happy Thanksgiving to you both as well! We are undecided if we want to create a new Thanksgiving with some Pichana this year or try and find a turkey 😂. We are grateful to be here as well, shocked it's been a year already for us!

We currently live in Sesimbra and were able to pre-order a fresh turkey from the local butcher....just in case you need one for next year. Have a great day!

You have indicated that you take a pension and social security. I will assume you have traditional and Roth IRAs. It is beyond difficult to determine if annual earnings, but not distributions, from both traditional and Roth IRAs are taxable (assume not NHR status). Comment? Since NHR is no longer available, it appears that the combination of Social Security, pensions, and dividends would easily put one in the 48% Portuguese tax bracket versus less than 1/2 that in the U.S. I also agree, that contributing to the country's economy is important and would be happy to pay reasonably higher taxes. Your thoughts please. Thank you

@keithrosenblum3862 This is very complicated and is different for different situations. Our best suggestion would be to talk to an immigration attorney as they keep up with the many changes in the laws. Best of luck!

Por favor, may I ask if you had Medicare before you left and if so, did you drop it when you left? I am considering emigrating to Portugal after several recon trips there and am trying to figure out what to do with Medicare, because if I drop it and then find myself having to go back to the US, they will essentially fine me through higher payments for having dropped it. I very much appreciate your entire helpful presentation. It is a great help with my research. Muito obrigado!

How can you go to Portugal before you get your visa? Without a passport?
@americanslivinginportugal3 ай бұрын
Yes, you can stay up to 90 Days as a visitor without a visa. If you start an application for a visa to be a resident, things change so I would talk to an experienced Portugal residency attorney. I hope this is helpful!

Autoimmune disorders are increasing exponentially here in the states. Even among many of us who believe we are following a healthier diet. They’re destroying our food. I can eat corn every day in Mexico, and one meal in the states will make me sick. Planning on moving to Spain or Italy for a healthier slower paced life prior to my. Retirement.
