As an 85 Defender (technically Land Rover 90) owner who daily’s it. Make sure the basics are covered: cooling, brakes, ball joints, wheel bearings, UJs/props, and suspension..those will get you 90% of likely repairs. Also recommend waxoyling before the winter. I also recommend buying a battery jump starter if you don’t already. Fun trucking! Slow and steady will still make it to the finish line :)

Cheers! Im planning on doing a sheepfat coating (seeps into the rust) some time soon. And even though the brakes are good, I’m planning a full overhaul because safety. All the other bits is also getting some love soon! It has 75000 km on the clock, but living trough a war and ten years in Norway does not help the poor thing 😂 but it’s been stored inside most of its life in Norway at least!

@@kasperhoglundI've driven a lot of them in the military, and also delivered them across UK. I absolutely hate them! 😂 Ultra noisy, draughty, extremely slow and shakes you to bits on a smooth 🛣️ road. Long journeys are very unpleasant. The engine is unreliable. The useless windscreen wiper, the clunky gearbox, the lack of decent aircon, no decent radio or satnav, the terrible suspension and overall tractor 🚜 like experience when driving one. They remind me of rattling along the road in a tin can. Even off-road I much prefer diving and living fulltime in a decent SUV. But that of course is just my personal opinion. I know the old military tin can on wheels offers cheap initial buying price...but I find that they end up costing far more in maintenance and conversion costs than running more modern 4WD from the 1999-2006 era, which can also be bought for around £2,000-£5,000 depending on model and year.

Nice vehicle! After a decade of 109" Series 3 ownership and about 80,000 miles on the road, may I suggest considering carefully the quality of available parts whilst improving and maintaining your vehicle. It's well worth spending out for genuine, new old stock parts in many cases, especially where reliability is important. Not the easiest of vehicles to own and maintain but well worth it.

About 10 years ago i bought an ex-army 1970 Series 2 and converted it into a camper. Its still going strong (OK rebuilt engine, brakes, gearbox diffs...). Its great fun to drive (at 45mph) very reliable (so long as its serviced weekly) and sleeps myself and my son in almost no comfort. We love it and go away at every opportunity. Its amazing what you can fit in, we have a diesel heater, sink, toilet and stove plus 2 bunks. A recent addition has been cargo racking on the sides to lash stuff on outside to free up some (any) floor space. Someone once looked at it and said "Its Tetris camping" : }. They are right, put one thing in the wrong way round and you either have to pull it all out again stand on one foot. My advice - take your time with your build, a lot of ideas don't work the way you imagine and keep it simple. Shop for ideas you can copy and make everything yourself, if it doesn't work cut it up and start again! If you really run out of space get the matching army trailer, they are equally tough but your speed on hills will be 20 mph!! (They are called Sankey Trailers). The Series is rated 3/4T cross country and the trailer another 3/4 ton cross country. We cut side lockers which makes a lot of extra space.

I own a 1990 N/A Diesel Defender truck. These vehicles are gems from the past. One advice: You could have a sliding window at the back of the truck to the right. You would have better visibility while going backwards on reverse gear. It helps in crowded areas.

I have a 1982 109 County. Good luck with the build, the mechanics and electrics are simple enough, a lot will depend on how much you want to change up. An overdrive and power steering are worthwhile driving improvements. If the power steering stops working, the steering will still work so it won't strand you, a bolt on ram system is as simple as it gets and will make a big difference if you're running bigger tyres.

Any man that's going to take an old rover and fix it up, gets my subscription. I actually got stuck behind a new Defender the other day, wtf were they thinking? I've noticed them sliding over about the last 10 years with the platform in general. Luxury over utility. I'll take utility any day. I've always admired Land rovers and in particular the defender after driving several while I was stationed in Europe in the military. Just never had the time to buy one and keep it running and restore it. Though much like you said a functional restoration, not restoring it back to brand new.

Good luck with the new rig, it will surely be an awesome experience 😊

Thanks! The simplicity and rigid setup is what I’m looking for with this. Kinda fed up with fault codes and electrical stuff I can’t fix on the go. Respect, thats a very sweet sounding 109. To be honest I would prefer the Coopers to the BFG. I find the latter get quite hard over time and make for scary braking in the wet. The coopers offroad are excellent compared to the AT3. If you have teh money go for a new Roamerdrive rather than an old Fairy. Personally I have an S1 80, S3 88, TD5 110 and TDCi 90.

Laying flat and being able to go from the seat to the bed (dividing wall in the disco because it’s registered as a van) was a huge win! Plenty of things I’ll miss in the disco, but this is a blank canvas and definitely more of an adventure 😂🤌

How well does it do with keeping you out of the elements and such? Keep us updated!

Can probably handle most things the discovery can, but it’s much more work for the driver instead of the car doing all of it😂

Nice old Land Rover. Maybe a Land Rover FC is the „next level“ if you need a little more space

Its a RAB fleece. Don’t remember the model name, but I guess it comes up if you Google it 🤝

Of all the Land Rover'sI had, my 1973 88 inch was the coolest by far. I always wondered how many people who owns a series III actually knows these are presumably the last cars in the world whom you can hand crank start (hand crank was included) if your generator fails... I had to do it several times until the issue was solved (the ground cable was loose). However, you need the ront bumper for that, and yours seems to be missing ;-)

Takk 🤝😄
