I'm from Maggie valley and I miss this guy so much. I'd see him at the post office and grocery store when I was a kid and he was one of the kindest people that I've ever interacted with. They dont make them like that any more.

@@richardmendoza738 He committed suicide instead of going to prison. He was up against a long prison stint because he got caught making liquor, and the government being the government were not willing to show any mercy. So instead of dying in prison, he went out on his own terms and the world lost a truly original person. I'm still pretty salty about to be honest.

People that don’t have grand parents and great uncles and aunts, this is what it’s like. So much wisdom, when they tell their stories and look into your eyes it’s like going back in time. I wish they could stay young forever to help us through tough times…

One of my grandfathers died when my dad was only 14, and the other when I was 3, and both of my grandmothers live across the country so I rarely get to see them. This interview is amazing, the wisdom and even the different words he uses are incredible to hear, and it makes me upset knowing I will never have someone to tell me such stories. However, I am very proud of my grandfathers as they both were incredibly hard working men and raised my parents to the best of their abilities for which I could never repay them.

This is fantastic. It reminds me of sitting in the floor as a kid out in rural Northeast TX listening to my great uncles tell stories. From the cigarettes to the overalls to the wood panel walls. The phrasing, sentence structure, and vocal inflection are all incredibly similar. Not to mention the story arc and outcome. Thanks for posting this.

i moved to nc in 2019 and stayed on 80 acre farm tucked in a holler in little sandy mush. the owner told me the property belonged to Popcorn. he told me his story and right there was where the wife died and yadda yadda yadda. well months later after i left the farm i'm relaying the story to some coworkers in arden. they near laughed me off saying Popcorn owned every where, every place belonged to Popcorn, just something locals say. so in a nutshell i may or may not of stayed at Popcorn's place, either way Popcorn was a legend!

I can't find it, who knows which clip has the section where he talks about smoking his first tobacco? Something like "He gave me that bag of Prince Albert tobacc'er an' I sat there and I sch'moked it". That line will never leave me 😅 EDIT - the very beginning of Clip 8!

I'm not much of a drinker. Was always curious if Popcorn was a fan of the wildwood weed. Surely he'd hit it a couple times with ya.

I believe there are still similarities between generations. I had the same story basically. In middle and high school you rode the same bus home where I went. Also the alternative school (for the bad kids)... Well I was in middle school and this guy was high school age but went to the alternative school. He has these little dolls (don't know where they came from) that he'd throw at me. Cause he sat in the back while I was more upfront/middle. He kept doing it day in and and day out. Throwing them at my head. One day I snapped and had enough of it. Whether you're religious or not it doesn't matter, but I believe it was the hand of God. I took that doll and threw it as hard as I could back at him. I ended up giving him a black eye. That principal told me "you're better than that to be messing with him". His name was buzz (or that's what they'd call him). Our punishment was that we both sat in the front of the bus the rest of the year. My dad didn't say anything to me, and after that he stopped messing with me.

Your *will* determined the outcome. Not only is that the "hand of god" (you) ((creation // destruction)) it's the will of god It's also karma - *cause* and *effect*
