It works the same way as genetics. If your mom has brown hair and your dad has blonde hair then it’s a 50-50 that you’d get blonde or brown. The same goes for abilities. Riki didn’t get the griffin ability but he does have the DNA of a griffin. And Jay has used his dark magic abilities countless of times. It just wasn’t a highlight of any episode (meaning, there were tons of more important scenes so nobody focused on his magic) the same goes for everybody else
