Also... loved watching the perpetual relocation of the fridge during the remodel... I have been thinking through that as well as part of our plan, about how to keep things functioning during the project. Seeing the fridge moving all over the space made me smile. :-) Also found it helpful to see that you installed the flooring in the open space instead of cabinets first and then doing flooring around them. Your way is probably easier and ultimately faster. Helpful to see that!

You did a great job! We learn lots during each job we do! For this job, I would go to ceiling with uppers so there's adequate room for trim. I would eliminate need for table and carry the reno and new cabinets/counter all the way down the wall. The island would be seated on the flooring transition and go longer once table/chairs are eliminated. I would also demo old counter, but I can see this being done in phases, after such a lengthy process. Eg, you can add new counter later. I would replace boob light... It tells the age of the light and easy to fix. Good job! Would you do it again ? I am planning our second kitchen reno(prev reno sold). What an undertaking, but so worth it!

But I'll keep the renovating as a hobby. I'm tackling our kitchen now, its cabinets are 1995 I think, oak and pretty outdated. Already did the countertop/sink replacement. Such a big difference. When I installed the cabinets; It wanted them to be standard height off the countertop, so I didn't just butt them up to the ceiling. I didn't want to fill the void with drywall, because of the additional time and labor to do that. ....but know thinking about it, I could probably remove the cabinets 'crown' trim and replace it with custom crown moulding and probably fill that void just nicely! To be honest; I just never really thought of it, but will now! thnx 👍👍👍

I'm assuming that you checked with a structural engineer to ensure that the wall that you removed wasn't load bearing, right? :).
@willdocter4 жыл бұрын
No, I did not. I just know that my standard w-trusses don't require a center support. There's only three different models of home on my street; this single story home, and two two-story versions. all have varying layouts but a few of the single story homes have an open kitchen, without beams so I knew it was possible and unlikely to be load bearing. As I looked into it, I found that the trusses in my roof were the same as the trusses in my garage. My garage has no load bearing support in the middle. The trusses are the same length, same webbing and same connector plates. There is nothing in my attic to require anything different than my garage (like HVAC equipment or an area for storage) They're just a basic w-truss thats supported around the perimeter of the house. This is backed up by there not being any means of carrying the load in the crawlspace. Perimeter foundation only. Had there have been support from underneath or anything else didn't jive, I would've hired an engineer to come out an look it. Being able to confirm with my neighbors was huge in reassuring me that this was unnecessary. This is not a blanket statement for anyone looking to do this themselves though and I strongly recommend every do their homework before tackling such a project!

I am handy but not this handy to handle the electricals. How long did the project take start to finish? Are those IKEA cabinets? Great job.
@willdocter4 жыл бұрын
It took a few weeks to plan and from Demo Day to completion took about 4 weeks. Their REALLY close! Their Klearvue Cabinets from Menards. If I remember right, the feet are almost the same, the soft close hardware is about the same, the modularity of everything is about the same. The only real difference was the box on these come preassembled and i thought the IKEA cabinets had to be assembled, sometimes with metal strapping but i could be wrong. Thanks!

Hey man how did you learn how to do all this stuff did you just watch youtube videos and read the instructions manuals? Or do you have a history of working with stuff like this? cause I'm interested in learning I want to renovate my own house
@willdocter4 жыл бұрын
Hey! This was my first major renovation! I've ran single electrical circuits before. I've replaced pieces of drywall before. I tiled the original kitchen. I've installed shelving and cabinets before. ...but nothing as all encompassing as this or to this scale. I knew that I could do this project on my own, cause of all the research and knowledge I gained from previous smaller projects. Any thing I didn't know I had to learn 'on-the-fly'. I talked with professionals (mostly electricians), buddies I knew, KZbin and other literature. Thankfully it's 2020 and a worlds cumulative knowledge is literally at our fingertips! The biggest hurdles I faced with this project was the budget (saving money), actually starting the project and finishing it 1000% completely finished within a set timeframe! If you're looking to do your own remodel.....?! Do it! Make a plan! Make a budget! Hire out what you can't do and put the research into what you can so that it comes out perfect! Most importantly; have a schedule and make sure you complete your project 100%!!!! Good luck Jason!

You're very talented! Great selections, especially the flooring. Just wondering...why did you go with laminate countertops? Seems granite plus tile backsplash would have sealed the deal.
@willdocter4 жыл бұрын
Hey thank you!!!! :) I went with laminate for the countertop and quartz for the island, just for price! This kitchen is WAY overkill for my tiny house and is already way over built for my neighborhood. Spending the extra $$$$ would've been a waist and I would not have seen any return. It would've looked great though, I agree!
