Phil is one of the original American expats who has lived in Budapest since the early '90's but left a few years back to the states and is currently a professor of film in Atlanta, GA. While visiting Budapest with his wife, he sat with me to discuss the reason he is returning to Budapest to "retire" in the next few years and gives his quick tip and advice for those thinking about relocating here.

I'm currently doing my lsat two weeks of an eight week stay in Budapest. Susan and I did 3 months here 5 years ago and really wanted to come back Upsides: We can't live at home in Newark, NJ for what it cost us to live here Best food in the world Best beer and wine in the world best architecture in Europe Great public art and museums Everyone under 50 speaks english and loves foreigners downsides The sidewalks tend to be narrow like Philadelphia, not wide like NYC sidewalks nearly all slope almost 10 degrees towards the street. Every one over 50 speaks Russian and they do not like foreigners Florints are pretty but hard to deal with

Haha most of it is true but as a Hungarian, I can assure you, we do like foreigners, although we're a bit reserved, less open to strangers at first, like Southern ountries in Europe. But once we get to know someone, we open up to them and treat them like long-time friends, or at least most of us to. People before 1989 were obligated to learn Russian, no other foreign languages were really allowed to be taught in schools so that's a problem because older generations couldn't learn English. But they are good at sign language as a last resort if they want you to understand them :D

"Best beer" - I'm sorry, what? Unless you buy the stupidly expensive craft beers, every other Hungarian beer is crap compared to German or Belgian stuff.

just for your information, there's no such thing as an expat, you are immigrants living in Hungary and that's a good thing. Welcome, I hope you are having a good time.
