MAY 2017 - My wife, baby son, and I stayed at this apartment in Tokyo for 1 week in May 2017. This was a great condo, located not far from the central Shinjuku area of Tokyo. One of the things I love most about living or visiting Japan is that the living spaces are so cosy and so comfortable. Even though you usually don’t have a lot of extra space or moving room, there’s everything you need in a Tokyo apartment in such a small space.
In this apartment in Tokyo, there was 1 bedroom, 1 living space with a small balcony attached, a small kitchen with a bar counter dining space, and finally a bathroom equipped with a life-changing Japanese Toto toilet and something completely new for me - a Japanese sitting shower.
Hope you enjoyed this Japan apartment tour in Tokyo. This is a little glimpse into the possibilities of living or staying in Japan and an apartment you can rent when you visit. I rented just for 1 week, so it was short term, for $60 per night. But renting an apartment like this per month should be much more affordable.

That tiny sink above the water tank is a way for us Asians helped in water conservation. The idea is, after you did your thing in the toilet, wash your hands in that tiny sink and the 'used" water goes into the tank to be use for flashing the next time you use the toilet again.

Flushing water can be used so many times. It's on stages of using the clean water. On clean stage for cleaning. The water drained to the water tank for flushing. The same amount of water being used twice.

How Japanese take a bath: you first wash yourself sitting on the stool in front of the mirror and using the shower. If you are completely clean, you go into the bathtub to relax. After you finished relaxing, you cover the hot water in the tub with a sheet or kind of plastic blanket to keep it warm, because the next person will use the same water to relax. That is why you have to be clean before you enter the bath tub. I was in Japan for a traineeship and stayed three months with a Japanese family, that is where I learned how to use the bathroom.

I lived in a motorhome for an extended period of time, so living in an apartment like this man's would be perfectly okay with me. I believe my whole family could live there comfortably.

My daughter and family lived in Shibuya for two years. We saw such a contrast. We went to a beautiful park and I had to go to the bathroom and it was just a hole in the ground. We went to a pretty hotel for dinner and the bathroom was ultra modern. The toilet had several buttons, seat warmer, warm water spigot to cleanse and music played. Their home was unusual for Japan , quite large and pretty. My husband and I really enjoyed Japan. Tokyo was fun and fascinating. We went to Kyoto to get the old world flavor. The "bullet train" was awesome. They have dispenser machines for everything. Great experience.

I lived in suburban Tokyo on a U.S. air force base (Tachikawa) when I was 5 years old in the late 1960s. I remember it well and see that things are much different in terms of technology. Nevertheless, the emphasis on detail and comfort were emphasized then just as shown here. LOVE the water conservation in the bathroom.

1800$/month is VERY expensive, even compared to downtown London, where you could rent a 1/2 bed room modern appartment for 1200-1500 pound/month. On the contrary you can rent a 2-bedroom modern appartment in downtown Shanghai for 600 - 800$ / month. One can only say it's cheap compared to living in a hotel in Tokyo, for a short time ( like weeks )stay.

This apt seems to be about 30 years old; more modern buildings are much bigger, with even more "hi-tech" stuff built in. The actual size of a unit can be as small as one room only and as big as 3 bedrooms, living room, etc. Still, at $60/night in the middle of Tokyo seems a good value for a family-oriented visit with a baby. This is not a "standard" by any means for a family of three or more:) for Tokyo "residents" in the upper/middle class segment. Fun video, though.

As far as I have found out the little sink in the bathroom is for washing your hands and then the "hand water" gets saved in the tank for next time you flush. For saving water. I know there was a larger one right there but that seemed a bit western style, perhaps they put it in just in case outsiders come for visit/live there for a while...and well it is a luxury thing. That bathroom was very big for such a small apartment in Japan as far as I have seen. Such a cutie petutie rolling on the his bed

The apartment is a microcosm of Japan. It could look basic on the outside but the details are better and complete than other high-end places.

Wow that is a lot bigger than I expected! Lol the worlds biggest sinks for tiny places! Cool, flush the toilet, water goes to sink, you wash your hands and then the water fills the toilet, pretty cool and smart!

It's considered a good sized apartment you rented there in Tokyo. I've stayed in smaller units that are studio apartments where everything is in the same space, and the toilet you have there is a premium size compared to the one I rented. All in all, thanks for sharing and being such an optimistic person does help in tight situations like these. Lol!
