Stanford Torus Redux - Here is a variation on the Stanford Torus, showing some features omitted in previous animations, such as the shield, and shield rigging. The same practical issues apply with this classic design, but its fun to play with the idea :)
For Each Torus...
Habitat Ring Diam: 1200m
Width: 230m
Rotation: 1.2RPM = 1G
Tangential Speed: 76.7 meters per sec
Shield Thickness: ~3m (6 megatons @ 4.5 tons per m^2 of shielded area)
Population: ~13,000 @ 67m^2 p/person

It's amazing what will be possible once launch costs plummet and we've got some civilian orbital infrastructures up!

So far, I don't think I've disliked any video you've made. They've all been that good. OK, I'm off to check out Bubbleworld.

@fragomatik If the domed structure had a water shield resivoir in the glass dome itself, it would work just fine as a radiation shield, while still letting in a fair amount of (bluish) sunlight.

If I was to build a moon base, I'd put it underground. A meteorite comes so fast, and the night is long and cold. For launching from the Earth, has any of you heard of space cables and launch loops?

Great early-KZbin-era video, cool music, neat concept. I need some clarification on what you're showing here: It looks like this space station / orbital city / space habitat is actually two spinning-wheel habitats, joined together at a non-rotating hub. The non-rotating hub serves as a docking port(s) and reception area, as well as a connection to a huge lunar space tower (or is that a tether?) coming up from the lunar surface. And it looks like, some distance further down the tower, there is another, non-rotating space station (perhaps a zero-gravity industrial station, used for manufacturing?) as well as at least one moonbase on the lunar surface near the base of the space tower. Do I have that right? Thank you for sharing this video.

You are 100% on-the-money! That is *exactly* what I was trying to convey with this video. It opens with solar-sail leisure-craft racing near the double-wheel habitat, and ends with a maintenance crew doing some work on a moon-base power node. Thanks so much, I'm very glad you enjoyed!

@@fragomatik And that's 13,000 inhabitants PER SPINNING WHEEL? Correct?

@@wingsley IIRC that's about right - 13k per hab ring

Just wanted to reiterate: that music soundtrack is great. Perfectly in-time with the video action. This is rapidly becoming one of my all-time favorite KZbin videos.

Very nice work (as always), but are you taking into account the gyroscopic effect? (See "attitude control" in wiki "Island Three") One way is to have the shield counter-rotating; the center of mass and the axis are the same, maybe you could change attitude by varying the relative speeds of the habitable area AND the shield. Or you could have 3 torus on the same axis, side by side, with the middle one counter rotating (that middle torus would have to be double the mass, or rotate 2x, etc).

How about a corkscrew shape? It could be expanded by adding to the ends. I guess the shield would need to be a simple cylinder, surrounding the whole thing. Also easy to expand by adding onto the ends. But, you wouldn't be able to see the cool corkscrew shape from outside. :-( Unless the shield were transparent? Maybe made out of quartz?

@fragomatik Finally someone who shares my practical optimism, NEO's have a massive potential. A Super heavy Lift vehicle is needed, the Ares V was a step in the right direction.

HA! Bloody good rendition! VERY Impressed with the level of detail you did on the outer "Walls" It is the exact sort of thing I had in mind all those years ago in terms of extra detail. Also two rings spinning in opposite direction, VERY good as well from physics stand point. So many have two rings spinning in the same direction, very poor design. Cool to think I had a hand in shaping this all those years ago! ONE Nitpick however no 'interior' shots though I guess we got those in the first one

@fragomatik Well, you certainly come up with some gorgeous stuff, and the designs are astounding and elegant at the same time. What animation program are you using for your work? I'm working on some mega-habitats myself, but they are pretty different, and possibly not as efficient as yours. But I guess mine are based on sort of what you just said, "Up-front megaengineering..." I think the idea in mine is that they come from a more advanced culture, so these aren't such problems... IDK

You're telling me! that and Project Orion! We'd have both you know if the USA had the stones to back them back when they were first designed.

@fragomatik No problem, thanks for making these awesome vids! :-) I've read up about Kalpana One; it certainly seems like a much more feasible approach, albeit a much less exciting / appealing one. Well, I wouldn't want to live in one of those anyway, but I'd LOVE to live in an O'Neill cylinder. Maybe not forever, but for a couple years, hell yeah! :D

Why not just use the "Blue Danube" by Strauss. 2001 set the standard, and it's said to copy is to compliment. Great graphics. One up Kubrick?

Hey there! Glad you enjoyed! I've already used 'Blue Danube' on a couple of my other videos (Discovery II & AlphaLEO Station) so probably best to not overuse it lol! Besides, I *really* like this version of 'Velvet Sun' by Teru & like using indie music & encouraging use of Creative Commons content.

@fragomatik Well muchas gracias for the sub. Yeah, that's pretty impressive for an old renderer. If you'd like to try Blender, you can get it free at Blender.org. They just today released a candidate for the upcoming 2.59 version. I've been playing with it and it's pretty smooth. At any rate, Blender has a huge following, works with many different external photorealistic renderers, and has a large developer base. They are always adding new stuff to it. You can even make games with it! Try it!

tunnel into the moon. Seal the corridors to preserve atmosphere. fire rail guns filled with "excess' surface material to accelerate the moon in a eliptical solar orbit gain speed for for 500+ years, While automated asteroid probes crash ice and ore into the surface for you to collect. Say hello to economy speed space travel. Meet you there in 350,000 years. Resources are going to be very tight. Most individuals will travel stored as data .

Amazing anim shame it doesent work Jump whilst you dont have any contact with the surface you negate all centripital forces and would land several meters in the rotation wish some of these amazing animators would help me with my design !

Yes, yes, we're all familiar with the Coriolis "effect". It's no big deal - certainly not a show-stopper - and of course if you care to read the text accompanying the video, you'll understand the thoughts behind the original concept. The only reason I ever started doing these animations is because I couldn't find anything else like them on the internet. In the end I realised that if I wanted to see these sorts of visualisations, I'd have to make them myself. So I taught myself. Yes, it took a *long* time, but it was worth it! If you're passionate about your design, you should illustrate it and build it *yourself*. After all, no-one knows exactly what you want to express except for you, so who better to execute it? The process itself will be informative and instructive, new skills will enhance your passion, and you will have learned something awesome along the way. You don't need anyone else to fulfil your vision, just some patience, some time, and some work. "The Universe Helps Those Who Help Themselves"
