Living in The Time of Dying is an unflinching look at what it means to be living in the midst of climate catastrophe and finding purpose and meaning within it. Recognising the magnitude of the climate crisis we are facing, independent filmmaker Michael Shaw, sells his house to travel around the world looking for answers. Pretty soon we begin to see how deep the predicament goes along with the systems and ways of thinking that brought us here.
Featured in this documentary are Professor of Sustainability and founder of the Deep Adaptation movement Jem Bendell, award winning journalist and author of "The End of Ice" , Dahr Jamail, Dharma teacher and author of Facing Extinction Catherine Ingram and Stan Rushworth, a Native American Elder, teacher and author who brings an especially enlightening viewpoint to these questions.
While it becomes clear that catastrophic climate change is now inevitable it also opens up a whole new set of questions: How exactly did we arrive at this point? What new choices can we make now re how to live our lives and what actions make sense at this time. The people interviewed in the documentary, all highly regarded and well known spokespeople on the issue, argue it's too late to stop what is coming but in no way is it too late to regain a renewed, life giving relationship with our selves and our world.

I am 68 years old; I have been involved in the environment and conservation since I was 10. Every day I think about our world and where it is heading. This documentary says it all. The greed and selfishness of humans have created this. It is too late to change direction. My heart aches for all the nonhumans, wildlife, oceans, insects, all other beings that did nothing to deserve to die because of us.

I remember when that there were all kinds of insects flying around that light I looked at that light last night There was not even one insect around that light. Not even one moth. Not even one. I remember seeing Luna moths. In fact all of the big moths. I don't see any now. I don't see the dragonfly or damselflies like I used to. Fewer and fewer butterflies as well. Grasshoppers. excellent documentary! 11 years ago, I was part of a 4 person sailing crew (from a tiny marine conservation ngo) that visited various islands in Vanuatu/the Solomons. These small island communities invited us to assess their coral reef ecosystems and help establish marine protected areas. At one island community, after I spoke about climate change and adaptation measures, a 6 year old asked me 'what is your country doing to help climate change?' and my heart broke as I realised I had no answer. I still don't. Many marine biologist friends of mine quit this field (including myself for the last few years) because of low pay and the mental toll of knowing the facts and not seeing much happen to counteract this. I've been sad for years and I can't un-know humans' ecological impact - climate change, ocean acidification, loss of our forests, plastic pollution, etc. I decided that I'd rather live simply and be in the ocean and just turned in my notice at my job with the plan on going back into marine conservation. What an absolutely gorgeous planet we live on!! 🐳🌏

I am someone who has been directly affected by climate change. 2 years ago a wildfire destroyed the place we had lived for 13 years. Everything was burned. Diaries, poems, pictures, clothing, everything. I would have appreciated a little more about the anger this loss can cause, not just sadness. It is probably easier to just be sad if it hasn’t taken so much away from you, yet. How could the oil companies just ignore what they knew to be true? Greed. The world behaved like there was no tomorrow, and now there isn’t any. Actually, that might be preferable to dying slowly like lobsters in slowly boiling water. Our insurance company wouldn’t give us all our money unless we moved back into the same circumstances we were in before, in the same area. Crazy! I’m very afraid we will encounter yet another fire, the drought is so bad. It would also be better if we weren’t killing off so many species in addition to our own. So the earth may continue to exist, but without birds, fish, animals, people.

How To Live In Harmony With Nature And Reduce Pollution 1. Many Production Which We Do Not Need Actually For Human Beings Has To Be Stopped We manufacture so many products and it is creating pollution. So if we minimise our products, pollution would be less. We produce so many things which we do not need, like cold drinks, leather products, potato wafers, chips, fruit juices, chocolates, biscuits, pickles, ice creams, etc. Cold drinks, fruit juices, pickles, ice creams, etc. Should be cooked at home only. If we stopped producing this things which are not required for humans, so much pollution could be reduced. If we colour the clothes pollution occurs. So if we don't colour our clothes, the pollution resulting from colouring the clothes can be stopped. Let everything remain in natural colour. 2. We Should Cook Foods In Its Natural Form We can cook rice and wheat in our homes and eat it. Rice and Wheat is produced in farms. Then it is packed and transported to big warehouses, then wholesalers buy from them and supply to retail shops. But if a manufacturing company makes bread from rice and wheat, then to make bread a manufacturing company has to be set up, machines and working staffs are needed. When a company is built many other things are also needed. Then at last a plastic pack is required to pack the breads. So if we start cooking eatable things in its natural form then we do not need many companies like bread manufacturing company, tomato ketchup, noodles, fruit jam, pizza, burger, etc., the things required for the company and the plastic pack, paper box pack and glass bottles. If done like this, so many companies will not be required and hence less pollution for the world. Also we could save our money like this. If you buy a packet of bread, it would cost you more money than if you cook wheat and rice in home. Previously before industrial revolution, we didn't have technology, but our foods were rich with nutrients. Now we have technology, but technology is polluting our foods and our foods are not rich with nutrients, and because of that also we have health problems. If this is done, then many jobs would be lost. For that many peoples should do farming and they should be given loans if they do not have enough money to start farming on their own. Food, Medicines, Surgeries and Education's should be made free to the world till the world settles down with farming. After that food, medicines, surgeries and education's should be stopped free to the world. Many people should study botany subject so that they have knowledge of plants and they should do farming. Is their any another solution, that humans won't lose jobs and also pollution would decrease. Humans have to take this step certainly instead of going on polluting the earth, making wildlife extinct and also mass extinctions of humans in future. 3. Electricity Pollution We create electricity from many types of sources like coal, water, etc., but it creates pollution. If electricity created from windmill and solar energy then no pollution occurs in the creation process. But still to manufacture windmill and solar machines pollution would occur. As I previously said that if we shut down many manufacturing companies which are producing things which are not needed for humans, then the world would not require so much electricity. If less electricity required, then less pollution generated. 4. Could We Stop Drinking Cow's and Buffalo's Milk Whatever vitamins and nutrients we get from milk, if we can get it from other eatable things, then we can stop drinking cow's and buffalo's milk. As milk has to be packed in glass bottles and plastic packs and then transported to places. All of this can be stopped. For infants whose mother's have died or mother's who cannot breast feed their infants, only for them cow's and buffalo's milk should be given. We use milk in tea and coffee. Instead of milk we must use lime with tea and coffee or just plain tea and coffee. A lime should be cut into a few pieces and cooked with tea and coffee or something else can be used instead of lime. 5. How Much Should Be The World's Population Every place should have a single house. No buildings, everything ground floor. If we do this and the whole lands of our planet earth would be occupied one day with homes, farms, forests, schools, hospitals, etc., then we would come to know how much our planet earth can have maximum population. Once the population is determined, then we have to maintain that population. For example if our earth can have a population of 10 billion peoples, then when the population reaches 10 billion, then everyone should have only one child till the population reaches 9 billion peoples. As if we have only one child then the population decreases. When population is 9 billion peoples, then everyone should have 2 children's till the population reaches 10 billion peoples. After that again we should have only one child. In this way population can be maintained.

This is a common illness among environmentalists, they are all heartbroken. This is a symptom of a bad marriage. My advice it to leave the Earth as you would a bad marriage since its bringing you nothing but misery. This will make room for someone else who loves and enjoys his Earth. I take a trip to Fiji or Tahiti whenever the weather turns foul way up in the freezing cold Northlands. It does wonders to lift my spirits to soaring levels. This works great for all those tens of thousands of "climateers" too; they all take trips to 5 star seaside resorts (but they get us to pay 100% the costs) - its not only great fun but truly dirt cheap this way. All you need to pay for some tee shirts for the kids: "My dad is a climate scammer and he got to spend a whole week at the beaches at Sharm el Sheikh and all I got was this lousy t-shirt" The climate is always perfect at Sharm el Sheikh - sun and sea and sand on the Red Sea, I've been there - perfectly lovely. unfccc.int/cop27

This year I watched one buzz around, and one robin, and when the starlings came through the flock was a couple of dozen instead of the thousands that I remember from my middle age. The birds used to line the power lines all winter long, now you might see one or two on the same roads that used to have endless birds perched on them. How sadly true....... I remember well from my childhood the tremendous flocks of birds of all kinds flying north and south over Ohio in their migrations yearly........ And having studied anthropology and archaeology, I see the 'survival of the fittest' (at 24:50) reflected in the population statistics, as the wealth of the world repeatedly goes into the hands of a smaller and smaller percent of the population, for whatever reason. Does evolution even care what the reason is? They gain in whatever is valued while others fall behind. It appears to be a tautology: The rich survive because they're the strongest and smartest of our species, and they're the strongest and smartest of our species because they have survived!

@@charlescoryn9614 The survival of the fittest precept only applies to this technologically dependent, extractive civilization that relies entirely on the subjugation and exploitation of literally every other form of life. All nature, every life form that is save us, lives in reciprocity. Each has it’s place within it’s own ecosystem, it’s own critical function to perform within that system including in the end of it’s life, to be food for other life and have the sum of it’s physical being recycled and transformed into new life. That is the primary reality we all live in, that we are all inextricably bound to regardless of what false, meaning this ultimately unsustainable illusion of abundance that depends entirely on taking what the Earth no longer has to give, false reality that civilization has taught us to live in. This morning a man was walking past me while I was seated on a bench on a forest trail, he and I felt compelled to speak to one another. We ended up finding out how connected we already were in spirit. We became fast friends. We spoke about the plight of mankind, why we run to nature, why so many are disconnected from each other etc. After connecting so deeply with this stranger, I realized that it's possible to find others with the same vibrancy. Our eyes are open to the problem, therefore we can have our eyes open to the solution, and open to recognizing those who will contribute to the solutions. Our grief/guilt for our disconnection to Mother Earth is certainly real, but so is our love and childlike fascination with her. THAT is what we must tap into; our power to cooperate, coordinate, and create new things together with a similar vision that includes the well-being of everything on this planet. We need not live in despair for there is hope. As Stan Rushworth brought out, we are not captive by time or distance. And those of us who are awake to this plight of humanity, WILL FIND EACH OTHER. There will come a time when our courage will be activated and it will move us to connect and form a tribe of renewal and regeneration. IMO it's inevitable.

While the Bible has some good advice, as all religions do, the conceited notion of having divine right to rule and for man to have dominion over all of nature is problematic. We were kicked out of the garden as Stan Rushworth eloquently stated. So the Christian mindset does not propagate love for nature because it doesn't identify it as "sacred." They are not focused on the present... 'God will fix things.' 'It's not my responsibility.' This is a real shame. It didn't have to be this way. When one is neohumanistic, as all indigenous people were at one time, then everything is sacred and treated as such. As a young child growing up in NYC in the 1960’s, from my youthful observations and readings, my eyes and gut feelings told me we humans were not long for existence as a dominant species. Somehow I made the prediction that not only will we destroy ourselves, but most of the living things on this planet as well. Fast forward 50+ years and over 50 countries later to which I’ve traveled, I am fully convinced (and saddened) that my initial observations seem to be confirmed. Thank you for this documentary. Unfortunately, those who should REALLY read this, will dismiss it as propaganda to spook the financial markets. My son told me as a teenager that humans won’t last another 100 years, and I argued that he hadn’t done enough research to reach such a conclusion - now I’m not so sure. Frankly, I’m terrified of what will happen over the next few decades.

My grandfather was a native woodsman in the north woods, hunting, fishing, trapping and foraging as much as possible in a modern life in a modern world, where people have to have a job, a vehicle, insurance, and all that. In the early 60s he told me the world had been warming for a hundred years or more, that in his grandparents day the northern spruce forests were normally buried in snow so deep in winter only the tips of the treetops poked through and how people had to be careful to not fall into the deep snow beneath the trees and great caribou herds roamed south of the St. Lawrence river. He said he'd seen so much change in his lifetime I should understand we have no way of knowing what might happen in the future, but it was definitely going to be hotter. In the 80s I was convinced by a scientist friend that adding CO2 to the atmosphere would more likely cool the planet. Guess gramps was right and the friend was wrong. This year, as I work on the exterior of my old house and take my walks and bike rides around the area, I'm seeing very few birds and almost no insects. A crow has been hanging around the last few days, calling out periodically, getting no response. I saw a bee the other day, wow! The few I see make their general absence all the more obvious. The Great Waves of Change are here, this is a prophecy I read years ago, now I'm watching it happen. Look it up people, everyone everywhere needs to know.

Over the last five years, all of the insects have disappeared around my farm and many bird species have disappeared. When I noticed the animals disappearing, I contacted the EPA. I was told that under the current political climate, the EPA could only investigate if a corporation was losing money. The loss of insects means that a lot of my fruit trees don’t produce because they are not getting pollinated. You are now the firth person to describe the same thing to me. One lived in Arizona, one lived in New Mexico and the other lived in the outback of Australia. They were all as frightened as I am about the ramifications of what we are seeing. The land I am on was purchased from the original homesteader by my great Grandfather in 1906. My Grandfather said that up until WW2, the cows would always get out walking over the fences on snowdrifts in the winter. Since WW2, you never know what you might get. 11:30 Climate is going to ruin our way of life. Isn't it more realistic to say our way of life has ruined climate? Beautifully done documentary. My dad was 3/4 Cherokee. He'd take the family on vacation to see the reservations. He would always cry and tell us how connected we ARE to Nature, and then tell the stories of what happened to my People and why they now lived on government land with no hunting or rituals allowed unless under the scrutiny of the government. He was forever bringing home injured animals and rehabbing them to return to Nature. As I watched forest after forest get mowed down I'd ask my parents where did the animals go? I'd see hundreds of dead animals on the roads, who were trying to escape with nowhere to go. They'd tell me not to worry. 60 years later, it's deep inside and I will worry. I am watching my "brothers and sisters" the birds and beasts of the wild still trying to escape and find someplace to hide from humans. I am of the belief humans might have belonged here at one time, but our minds have changed, as well as our hearts. We need to go to let Nature heal and recover.

I think most people know we are connected to nature. You dont have to be first nations to get it. Corporations dont care. Stock markets dont care. Greed doesnt care and greed is a human thing not a racial thing. I dont act my life like I got kicked out of the garden so this first nations man metaphor doesnt feel like my truth. It feels divisive actually. The world is perfect in its imperfection. It is designed like this for karma to be played out. That wisdom is from a Tibetan Llama in Nepal and quite frankly it makes sense to me. We are in a school of sorts. Want to graduate. Then evolve. Stop coming back. Stop failing. If you dont stop greed in your own life the game will show you larger lessons. Everyone is pointing the fingers at the bigger picture instead of looking at their own fear and greed in their lives and admitting it, making amends and evolving. The bankers are an example of greed, corporations destroying the planet....geed. Now look t yours through your life. Got Greed? Of course you do. If you didnt you would be in this grade of the school. You ould have passed or become one of the masters who teach us here on this level 0f the game.

Wildflowers grew in far more variety of species, the Wet was MUCH longer and wetter, and the Winter was longer and cooler - MUCH cooler. There was much more of the native grass species. There were more butterflies and way more wild ducks, geese, wrens and wagtails, and lorikeets and Black cockatoos. At night the creeks had clouds of thousands of fireflies - and now there are none. Most people don't even notice the changes because they live in towns and cities. It's so sad. But most people don't even notice or care.

I can't feel bad for humans as a species, but all other species living by instinct, surviving with the tools they have evolved with over hundreds of millions of years, I genuinely feel remorse for all other creatures. Most of us didn't make the decisions to create the mess we are are, but almost all of us are guilty in one way or another of taking advantage of the very things destroying the only earth we have. I became aware of what I termed as "the unsanity of humanity" when I was about 6 yrs old. Back then it was not specifically the climate, it was the general state of conscious awareness in everyone. It felt as if my species was callous and blind, thinking mainly of itself as seperate from the rest. I was the last of 6 children and there were 3 teenagers in the house as i grew up... that made everything pretty clear. I am 53 now and dying myself, I enjoyed my life as fully as I could even while carrying this immense weight. The effect of this realizattion at such a tender age was devastating to my psyche, yet i managed through it all to go on just the same. Presence is our greatest power, the stillness by the pond is an excellant example of entering the now, zen, the end of suffering, heaven right here in the midst of us.

A man named Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) comprehended this reality of civilization suffering about 2,500 years ago and spent his life teaching the truth of this human-created suffering. What was unique about Siddhartha was that he offered a solution. A path (the Eightfold Path) that anyone can follow to escape from this suffering. This path was based on logic and science, not religion. It is a path that is not very well known in the "Western" world, but is followed by millions of people in the "Eastern" cultures. This path is an individual endeavor an can not be followed with beneficial results as part of a social consciousness. It is not an easy path because it requires that the person relinquish the concept of the the "self". Much easier in Eastern cultures. Almost impossible in Western cultures.

I watched your very important video but could not help thinking that pretty much all respected spiritual teachers express that everything is perfect and that the relative truths we experience often do not convey the true state of what is really occurring on our planet today. I have read hundreds of books and have concluded that the true crisis we face is actually a crisis of meaning. Environmentalists and anty capitalists have spent all their efforts fighting the fire up in the branches rather than at the source beneath the ground, and it is why we have failed. The crazy thing is the science that has helped trash our world is now grappling with truths that it is uncovering through incredible space telescopes and quantum physics. We need to spread the message that was clear to all spiritual teachers and mystical religions throughout the ages and is becoming clear to a reluctant scientific community. We are all one, you are me and I am you. Ukrainians, Russians and Americans are all brothers and sisters and manifestations of an indescribable, infinite intelligence, We just need to dispense with our greedy nailistic egos and listen to the voice of our true selves. That voice expressed collectively will transform our world.

it's causing despair in the west now bc our leaders are barely mentioning it. in US one political party denies it's even happening or that it is even a problem if it is. meanwhile corporations continue their chokehold over it all and politicians are bought out by them often it seems. if our leaders, if corporations would start admitting it so it can all be brought into the light so that we can all organize a crisis response globally, that would end the despair, the learned helplessness. it's also affecting the poor in the US now, especially, the storms, the fires, the people who were red zoned into neighborhoods with no trees which get significantly hotter during heatwaves. it's affecting the younger generations who when aware see the end of the world as in their futures

Just came across this enlightening documentary. The dual monster we are facing is us, together with the global economic growth model we are addicted to. 250 years of industrial and technological revolution is what we have to dismantle. Getting back to simpler ways of life is no longer a choice. It's imperative. Aboriginal cultures always practiced it, and always knew that living in harmony with Nature, and within its boundaries was the wise way to live and prosper. Our arrogance made us lose the compass long ago. Earth and Nature will teach us the final lesson. We will suffer, all eight billion of us on this beautiful planet. We must start living simpler lives, consume less, buy less, be humble, be happy with an spartan life. Communion with Nature's outdoors will easily provide us with the fortitude to face the immense challenges ahead of us.

what i love about this doccie - cos we have all seen so many doccies about climate change - is that i see the importance of processing death. many humans are dying from ecological disasters already & it’s escalating. one thing that i cling to in my conversations with middle class people is that we can’t live in the same way anymore. it’s not just that we’re propagating inequality and natural destruction, it’s our own extinction that we’re fueling. literally. i stopped eating fish & beef when i was 17. it wasn’t at all hard. the earth can’t support 300 million tonnes of humans, 100 million tonnes of wild animals AND 700 million tonnes of domestic animals. subsistence fishing by non middle class communities is sustainable, fish in supermarkets and restaurants is not. as middle class people, which is everyone with wifi & youtube, i believe we can convince each other to walk away from beef & fish. (sheep & pigs will follow as soon as the consciousness flips - chickens, poor miserable chickens, could perhaps be the last stage of transformation. without lifestyle changes, of which diet is primary, we can’t access the truth about our future. we’re just pretending everything is going to be ok, like a hollywood movie. it’s not. be the change.

I stumbled here when I was trying to find some advice for us empaths. Witnessing the current mass extinction is very hard for us, when already the death of a bird can make us grieve for days. It surprised me that they call awareness of the environmental situation for awakening. For the moment there is also a huge spiritual awakening, fueled by many near death experiences (NDE) and personal contacts with the spirit world. Our consciousness never dies. Some NDE'ers have seen the future of humankind, while on the other side. They have been shown immentent, very difficult time lasting several decades, called for purging. Lots of deaths and collapse of societies. After a couple of hundred years from now those few thousand people who have survived on the planet are living in harmony with each other and with nature.

Absolutely beautifully made. The calmness and clarity of the documentary and the perspectives of other ways of thinking and living in Nature are beautifully enlightening. Yet, the documentary finishes with a fossil fuel-based car. Even if we wanted a change -which we dont-, we dont know how. Mobility, water access, energy, food, health...Our idea of development is based on linear consumption and resource cannibalism. This is life as we know it. It is not the only way, but it would take a new civilization to change it.

I have many equal thoughts. My mom died this year of cancer and I was sitting quietly all the last 14 days of her life and contemplated. And its birth and death when some of the most profund and deeper truths are offered to the ones who wants to listen. And one truth is that everything is ending. And starting. A cycle forever. So part of that truth means we're going to end after all. All of us. Every single one. We are just in denial of that fact. I had this kind of revelation moment. Same applies for climate change and its effects on our ways of life. After all it will all end and each person in it as well. We seem to be kind of surprised to hear that fact but that just peaks volumes about our destruction and denial. Our way life is going to end? Yes, and so does everything. So what you do with that? Nihilism and hedonism is a bad choice for my taste. Listening and taking in quietly, living a life that I can look at myself in the mirror and hold up to my moral standards and observing beauty is my choice. There will be something after us, but that will not be us.

I LOVE the earth in the same way that a mother loves a child or a child idolizes his father. And for that reason, acknowledging the fact, that empirically-speaking, humans are the very worst thing that has ever "happened" to the Earth, I must reluctantly suggest that our "disappearance" might be a good thing. Humans have the technological capacity AND the arrogance to turn this lush green vibrant Earth into a sterile void like Mars or Venus. If you compare the ego-centric activities of humans to the long-nurtured symbiotic activities of EVERYTHING else, you come to realize what parasites we have proven ourselves to be. Our disappearance would be a cosmic kindness.

I must disagree. the selfish humanity you describe has only recently arisen due to the vicious style of economics imposed by the comparatively few sociopaths, which then catapulted them to positions of wealth and influence. for 2-300,000 years of homo sapien history and 4 million years of hominid history, the ONLY way to survive was in communal groups, we are a cooperative synergistic species.

When he talks about people not living within sight of an iceberg not understanding, I don't think that's relevant. Often we simply don't understand the implications of what we're seeing. A friend recently sent me photographs of the Atlas mountains in Morocco, where he was holidaying. Most of it is near- desert, or desert, but in the clefts between the mountains lush vegetation is to be seen, along with snow-capped mountains. As I was looking at the photographs it came to me why it was so barren: a small herd of goats and a herder in search of greenery to eat. Wales is also a kind of desert, a green one. No new trees can grow because the 13 million sheep ensure that no tree grows beyond a sapling, and there is almost no wildlife because all the nutrients from the soil go into the sheep which are then taken off the land for our consumption. Wales is much cooler than Morocco, so the grass is still growing. The Atlas mountains are mostly bare because the goats do the same as the sheep in Wales. The effect of this human desertification is far-reaching, reducing rainfall much further south. These are just two examples of situations where there is a missed opportunity to start storing carbon on a grand scale: take some of the sheep and goats off the land and trees will start to grow, the ecology massively improve and global warming to some extent slow down. This is happening across the world: billions of animals stripping ecological systems which could be storing carbon. I was extremely disappointed to see Bill Gates say we shouldn't tell people to eat less meat, that it isn't enough. When we are looking at extinction or collapse of civilisation, we have to pull out all the stops, do every last thing we can do to halt it. If you're in the Titanic you can't say "this end of the ship is rising, let's all just go there".

I knew this was going to hit us in the seventies as many of my family were scientist and opened my eyes. I made a choice not to have kids and I am glad I did. Scientist were silenced and labelled kooks of they pushed environmentalism. It is unfortunate people need to eat and live their lives so they remain silent and watch the end come closer. My only hope is one percent go with us.

It takes a lot of time to stay informed, to have monitored the shifting predictions for 20 years. Just this week I found Prof. Nisbet and his discovery of the methane being released by tropical wetlands. And here I'd been worrying about Siberia all these years. We're into huge feedbacks. I will check out the Deep Adaptation forum. I do feel alone in my sadness.

In the grand scheme of things, where we are was unavoidable. However, where we go from here requires a deep understanding and appreciation of what we all must do to first: adapt to the changes which are here and still coming, and second: adapt our behaviour and tolerance of what it will take to sustain what will be left. The sixth great extinction is upon us; we are not any longer the drivers of our fate, but the unhappy recipients of our own greed and blindness.

Thank you for this extremely important documentary. I am 57 and went from an atheist as a teen, to a Marxist some years ago and now transitioning a deeper understanding that we must greive and accept things as they really are. It is more important than ever to live with as much love, caring and understanding for those close and distant from us for what little time we have left. As Dahr Jamail said, we must listen to the Earth and to those around us with as much compassion and empathy as possible. I grew up largely unaware of any of these things. It's a lot to take in but it must be done, that's the least I can do is understand our collective reality and try to help others do the same to the best of my ability. I wish I would have had this level of understanding much earlier in my life but I do appreciate the fact that I have it now and I'll try to do as much as I am able to help others who are ready to transition to this type of understanding and help the earth and people through these massively difficult times the best way I can.

If there was a singular cause for ALL the problems in this world, undoubtedly it is Monkey Mind. It is the default program of our species (dogs just know how to be dogs, elephants just know how to be elephants, etc) and this program operates in the background of every person … from peasants to presidents, from popes to professors, from doctors to prisoners, and so on. The 3 Elements of Monkey Mind were elucidated by ancient Hindu and Buddhist philosophers with texts dating back 5000 years. All throughout Asia many monkey habitats thrived and were easy subjects to observe and investigate. In contrast, the 3 Abrahamic religions were conceived in regions barren of simian/monkeys/apes and for the few that existed there at the time were displayed as exotic curiosities and kept as imprisoned pets. Therefore, to the detriment of succeeding civilizations, Abrahamic religions missed out on key understandings of, “who are we” and synthesized mythologies based on magical thinking and story telling. But Truth is liberating and just like the sun and the moon, truth cannot remain hidden! The 3 Elements of Monkey Mind are common to many other animals on this Planet of the Apes, however, through specific practices it is possible to breakthrough our default program and attain enlightenment (many in throughout history have done so). Past civilizations attempted to elevate culture en masse beyond our feces-flinging ancestors, but had limited success. And so, the 3 Elements are: 1) Limitless Greed - nothing is enough for us, especially if it is pleasurable to the senses or rewarding to ego. The popular idea that ‘greed is good’ has many fans. Ex: Got a pay raise? Not enough, want more! Enjoyed sexy time? Not enough, want more! Feeling powerful with a gun? Not enough, need more power! Etcetera ad nauseam. 2) Tireless Fear - Nothing in life is certain, except uncertainty. Uncertainty is certain and is a Law of Physics. One can plan, scheme, organize, rehearse, but tomorrow is still uncertain. Fear is the result of uncertainty and inability to control variables beyond one’s reach. Fear is crippling and keeps people from living life fully (happiness). Governments and businesses (insurance industry in particularly) understand and exploit peoples’ fears to enslave and dominate their patrons/subjects. 3) Impassive Dominance - monkeys seek the highest position in the trees, especially when under threat, to get ‘above it all’. People ambitiously seek the Supreme by reaching and grasping for higher social status (fame), higher career positions, higher educational degrees, higher athletic achievements, higher domicile dwellings (skyscrapers), higher highs, etcetera ad nauseam, all believing it will reduce their suffering but often times has the opposite affect! These 3 Elements (Limitless Greed, Tireless Fear, and Impassive Dominance) have not been sufficiently handled by the ancients and so today’s civilization continues to bring suffering to the planet and all life living on it. Good for us, bad for everything else. Capitalism is fundamentally exploitative and is divorced from the economics of Nature. However, through practicing the 3 Virtues of Human Mind, we could transform suffering into caring. The 3 Virtues of Human Mind are: 1) Limitless Generosity - you will always have more than another in need and kindness does not cost anything. Practicing limitless generosity alone can generate an abundance of positive merit (good Karma) to turn the Wheel of Becoming. Very powerful practice that does not have to involve money, but just being helpful to others - the definition of Human Being. To the giver, comes the fullness of life. To the greedy, just an empty hand. 2) Tireless Trust - trust is the foundation of human civilization (past-present-future(?)). Trust forms the basis for all relationships. It builds confidence and instills security. Trust implies an understanding that we are all same, with same circumstances and our survival depends on our trust. “Trust yourself, Trust Others, Trust God” is a wonderful book for everyone to read! More importantly Trust dispels Fear and opens a world of possibilities! Do not fear your enemy, for he is your greatest teacher! 3) Passive Abiding - dominance is rigid and unyielding, therefore subject to fracturing and breaking. Abiding is soft and conforming, like water. Our bodies are 70-80% water, for it is the most powerful element in the universe, yet it is soft and abiding. Water conforms to its’ surroundings, seeks its’ own level, extinguishes fires, wears away rock, moves the wind, permeates all life, and transmutes states of matter (from solid, to liquid, to vapor) in cyclic forms. Water is Life itself! So get with the flow and as Bruce Lee famously said, “Be Water, my friend”! Practicing these 3 Virtues causes a breakthrough in Monkey Mind and can transform this planet’s tragic history. But it can not be forced or indoctrinated because truth speaks for itself. As Michael Jackson once sang in “Man in the Mirror”, “… that’s why I’m starting with me!” It is more than a catchy tune, but insightful wisdom! There is no alternative to our Gaia Earth and we must all learn to coexist in unity. We may not be able to reverse the rape and exploitation of this Eden caused by the ignorance of prior societies, but we can stop the hastening of its death … until Gaia 2.0 is located! ✌🏼🌞🙏🏼
