I was there for eco tourism studies in 2009. Its an amazing slice off off grid land. So close to Melbourne, and yet so beautifully remote.

Why is this island called "French Island"? What is the relationship with France?

I heard name it explained watching full episode on ABCiview. The island was named in 1802 by a French scientific expedition on board the ship, L'Naturaliste. This team circumnavigated the island and named it Isle des Francais. English settlers called it French Island.
