How strong can shallow depth earthquakes get? Watch this video simulation to find out!
I hope these simulations will bring more earthquake awareness around the world and educate the general public about potential earthquake related hazards. All these simulations take into consideration only the shaking caused in close proximity to the earthquake's epicenter. Also, a friendly reminder that for this video's purpose, I have shortened the actual duration of the simulation. Any earthquake over M 7.5 could last for more than a minute. The great Tohoku quake that hit Japan in March 2011 had a magnitude of 9 and lasted for about 5 minutes.

These earthquake simulations were created in Blender 3D with the Bullet Constraints Builder (BCB - a structural simulation code made by Kai Kostack) which extends Blender´s basic physics functionality with a sophisticated toolset to simulate load dynamics in building structures.

The highest ground shaking I ever experienced was intensity 7 (VII), the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.5 and occurred at 11pm midnight. LONG STORIES! The earthquake started when I was watching TV on second floor, I couldn't sleep at that time. small vibration started me, this small vibration had an intensity of 3 (III). Panicked, I went down to the 1st floor just in case the shaking would get bigger. Seconds after, strong vibrations came, I immediately left the house but I remembered the door was locked. Here, strong vibrations that were originally 5 (V) increased to 7 (VII). Imagine the earthquake increasing drastically when ur door is locked. Luckily it didn't take long for me to find it and immediately opened the door and came out. Outside, other people around were as panicked as I was. Many lay on the ground crying, others praying, holding their sleeping children, and others hugging each other. The vibrations gradually decreased, the duration of the earthquake was about 1 minute and was estimated at a magnitude of 7.3 but decreased to 6.5. In the morning, one by one the news appeared on my TV. Many residents' houses and various public facilities, including hospitals, were damaged and about 4 people lost their lives (all of them were grands).
@derichaviour
@derichaviour Жыл бұрын
That M6.5, although not the biggest earthquake, the intensity was one of the biggest I've ever felt. The biggest earthquake I've ever felt, were 8.5, 7.9, 7.8, 7.7, 7.5 and 7.3, almost all of them caused tsunamis. Luckily, the intensity was no more than the earthquake I described above (not meaning the vibrations were weak, all of them were quite strong). Back to November 2022, a M5.6 earthquake struck. This earthquake had an intensity of 9 (IX) at one point but was widespread with an intensity of 8 (VIII). The epicenter located very close to my city but however, the vibrations that I felt are only intensity 4 (IV).

@@EarthquakeSim no problemo bud! edit: it also brings me tears tbh because of the amount of shaking that goes on in other countries, and those countries are california turkey and whoever is in the RING-OF-FIRE in earthquake proned areas, i feel so dang bad for them! my heart goes out to them. those amount of shakings too, 6.0 and above is were the buildings starts to get damaged. and they need structule intergrity to withstand magnatudes above 6.0 and higher, and im talking about the shock absorbers, another words if people would be making that. the FIRST priority, MANY MANY MANY buildings would be spared. people needs to look into this, @earthquakeSim you should do the aborbers shock test in your simulators, that would make people feel a bit better knowing that the building will just shake very little, however the ground will be shaking violently, and the building will just shake very little, if you do a test on that, many many people will feel better, and you can spread the word too. look in to this, if THIS is possible to do!

@@bl1zz4rd25 thing is, theres different tectonic plates that occurs, whoever is living in earthquake proned areas, could just shake, could sway from side to side just like on a ship, or a roll something like that, between those lines. theres 3 different masses there. if you are one of those 3, you may expierence a ship thats rocking back and forth. like if you are on water or something like that. and may not feel it. just saying, just keep your guard up, and evacuate if a Tsunami hits in your area. if you see water going below the shore line, then you have a Tsunami coming your way. get to higher grounds. i've been reading up on a lot of earthquakes there. if theres to add. i'll possibly think of some, just keep your guard up, and listen to any Tsunami sirens if you live in earthquake proned areas!

I love the prior sims on the tv. It was line watching a news report of an earthquake that just happened and then experiencing aftershocks. The sound really added to the realism too! However, i remember when going through a 5.7 earthquake in Utah a few years ago, it sounded like a frieght train was rumbling towards me moments before the shaking started and continued until the shaking stopped. Adding the rumbling earth noise would also enhance the realism I think.
