I don't think enough discussion is spent on balancing your soils and how amendments may be antagonistic to each other. Also as we re-use our soil, not enough additional aeration or peat is added in typically. I usually top-dress with compost and amendments during my grow cycle, but I have only recently started to add in some additional pumice, rice hulls, and peat with my compost. The additional acidity of the peat helps make the Calcium in my top-dress amendments more available.

We start with around 50% peat moss in our mixes for a few reasons. I do like that the acidity of the peat allows me to use more alkaline inputs like Biochar and add more cations into the soil. I think what you're bringing up though is managing the physical properties of the soil, which is just as important as the fertility. As organic matter breaks down, you may need to add more aeration to keep the soil from becoming too compacted and draining well.

That's probably another video but quickly I want to see a balanced C:N ratio and good pH and balance of fertility. Ideally you'd throw it under a microscope too and see what microbial activity there is. And I'm making the assumption it's properly composted and free of pathogens and pests.

Is there a good at home soil test? That I could buy.

Unfortunately the at home tests are not very accurate and it's much better to send it in to a lab for testing. Sometimes your local university extension will have a better price but it's important to use the same lab every time so you can compare data. We use Logan Labs and offer their tests on our website if you decide to go that route.
