I love Barry's "benediction" after his talks: "There is no God, and we are his disciples." Brilliant. If anyone out there is in the Orange County (CA) area, we should connect. We need a rich and liturgical alternative to the happy-clappy church experience that is so prevalent here.

I love the idea of the Death of God being situated as a modern phenomenon, revealing this darker, anxiety-ridden dimension of modernity that are obfuscated by Enlightenment rationality and science. Absolutely crucial. Rollins' point that the way out is to go all the way in, that the religious moment is when you desire desire itself (Weil), or find meaning in the loss of meaning (Tillich). Modern identity is at its best when it embraces this contradiction. Also, Taylor's point that we can find a sublime beauty in the plague of life (Camus) is also dark but essential.
