Thanks for this episode. Just want to share filipino mentality on Western safety net mentality. In the Philippines, if you need to eat, you are surrounded by water so go fish. If you can’t fish, the land is fertile so stick something to the ground and it will grow. And before you get old, make some kids to do this for you. Safety net is DIY over there.

Save money for interest bearing account,, get Travel insurance, renewable, apply for PhilHealth, senior discounts and do exercises. Keep shopping around. Preventative is cheaper in the Philippines, such as MD consultation and some diagnostics test, this is if you are receiving US dollars.

I appreciate the info from Goldfinger regarding first hand experience with the expat health insurance. I have heard other you tubers talk about the need for this without really giving their experience. At 50 I think I'm going to continue to self insure. I'm a Vet and use the VA in Manila but it's very limited even if you're service connected. If you have scripts from the US you can bring those bottles to Mercury and they will refill them for you. I'm told that BP and cholesterol meds are relatively inexpensive.

Great interview guys ! First, Mike Onstad is the BEST insurance guy to deal with for ex-pats here (or anyone). But a few corrections on Pacific Cross coverage ... $2500 (not $1K) deductible gets you a 30% discount on premiums. The older you are, the more expensive the premiums. I'm 76 and mine is over $3500/yr and will increase as I get older. I do pay a little extra for TRT rider. And I don't know if you can be treated in another country (except for emergency) but they don't cover airfare.

Juat to make it explicitly clear to your audience, accidents are covered immediately, everything else in 30 days. Preexisting conditions are subject to a 12 month waiting period and an additional premium to cover at your option. Permanent exclusion is possible depending on the severity.

Thank you Michael Onsted of Pacific Cross Insurance FYI, Insurance is a necessity, especially if you're so far from home , medicare will not help unless you go home which takes more than a day travel and at a very costly ticket . Great conversation and the comparison. I looked at Pacific cross and because my age is about the same as Paul have come to the same conclusion I’ll self insure but I am retaining a backup Medicare with the idea something really ad happens get stabilized and go to Guam, Hawaii or California to use Medicare. Great Video Paul !!! I always wondered why Goldfinger was donating helmets instead of feeding the kids. The food thing and starving kids and retired Filipinos has been an issue over there a very long time. Remember, for just 1 meal they need very high calorie food regardless of nutrient value. Yes - Rice is Life, but fatty foods can be very helpful in those settings as well. My wifes family does not have much and I help with food, medical and dental costs for her parents as well as her daughter, (my daughter now that we are married), and her parents are around 70 and rely totally on family and still go hungry when visiting 2 of the other sisters. It is very sad to see.

@-goldfinger26956 ай бұрын
No, not worth the cost of transportation and housing, the states are too slow at making appointments with the requirements of referrals. Hence it takes months to get anything done in the states and your MEDICARE deductible is all you would pay for the procedure here or in Thailand. Besides being only 15% of the cost in the States ,Thailand has better equipment and are faster too.

Goldfinger rocks! A video with Goldfinger is enjoyable. A few takeaways. - Hypertension is a broad exclusion and a very low threshold to have given the ever lowering blood pressure number. Can the insurer then say your cardiac issue is related to hypertension? - The grabbers are great as is the food program. Be prepared that once you start giving out things from your house, it is inevitable that others, children and adults will come for food and money: Somehow, one person tells another, and it will be a constant stream of people you cannot accommodate. Look forward to the next Goldfinger video. Bring Goldfinger on a livestream. Love watching you guys from New York.

Probably better to set-up a specific time and place. Someplace separate from the home. I heard of several people getting in trouble with donations and giveaways. In one instance. The foreigner couldn't even handout the food. It had to be a local handing the meals to the kids. Otherwise they'd shut it down. Because the foreigner would be "working". It can get very complicated.

Was wondering if Goldfinger checked into Phil Health for medical insurance. I agree, it's very expensive for health insurance for older expats, like myself...74. Self insured scares me a little, but I can understand why many expats don't get the insurance. Not having a nest egg of large amount, the insurance would seem a safety net.

Always go with a 500 or 1000 deductible. If you’re not a saver-pay the premiums. If you were young, that’s different but you’re going to have medical needs. You’ll never have a million pesos if it’s true that you live month to month. That’s just human nature.

Admirable idea on the helmet. But the only way to get them to wear helmets is if they are perceived as very cool. Whether that means cooler designs and colors who knows, but it would be more expensive. So you’d first focus on getting 5 to 10 older kids to wear them. Bc young kids look up to older kids. Once you know 5-10 are wearing them then you broaden to a slightly larger number and so on. The next step would to get a vender to start selling them (they would make a profit not you). Maybe you donate their first supply. If they sell well they they will order more even if the profit margin is small. Then other vendors will follow suit. Those are the practical street strategies that won’t cost much money. The really effective strategies to build on your work is much more expensive and challenging. Things like sponsored concerts and motorcycle shows, and local celebrities and ads buys etc. And we haven’t even discussed police, school and government enforcement and incentives yet. So, yah, maybe go with the butt pinchers.

Yes, setting aside money does not work when the industry inflate the serviceprices. Offcourse it does not cost the hospital 8500 dollar!;) But that is the bill thry charged you. While for insurance companies, they get heavily discounted prices at the hospitals etc. And THAT is the number 1 reason why people get forced to go through insurance companies (instead of just saving up own money). Basicly capitalistic corruption and greed.

Been in Dumagette visiting filipino family for a week,ferry to Mindanao tomorrow for a wedding,last in Negros 2019,the increase in traffic is brutal,it's still an OK place,but man,so busy,so many more foreigners too,amazing the difference a few years makes,just an observation 😁

If you don’t have the savings to pay for a catastrophic medical event such as a Heart attack, Stroke, or motorcycle accident then please please get insurance. If you had savings you could consider self insuring but without savings its just not worth the risk. Its nice of your friends to offer to loan you the money but what if treatment is delayed while they sort that out (and the loan will effect your monthly quality of living). Your friends who are suggesting self insurance probably have savings so their situation is different……

Hi @paulz6491 Thanks for the reminder, we've learned that firsthand. Insurance has been a lifesaver for us.

Good show Paul ! - - - You survived this " event " and will live to tell about it !?! --- The insurance is a huge pain in the ass !!! > These insurance companies don't want any risk - do they ? All those tests to determine - IF - they will cover him ? = BS - in my 'humble' opinion !!! ( 🤗 ) Self insure if at all possible ? ! ? - - - Keep up the good works my friend. 🙏 👍 ❤

Feeding the kids is a very noble venture Goldfinger💪🏼🙏🏼Why don’t you get the kids to help in the business, that way they learn a trade/skill (helping buy the products, prepping and cooking). With their help you can expand the business or branch off into other profitable ventures?
@paulinthephilippinesolddog92345 ай бұрын
Hi @FilCanGil Thanks for the idea! We've actually been considering ways to involve our kids in the business. Great suggestion!
@loopydaloo74257 ай бұрын
Wow - what a big heart Gold Finger has. With regard to feeding the children, would like to make a suggestion. Maybe ask for intervention from a Dietician with regard to children's diet. There are some essential amino acids that can only come from various food (your body not able to make them). One of the essential amino acids is particularly needed for children. Based on what the dietician has to say, you can feed the children accordingly. Have a set meal for them instead of the food you sell to customers. I'm from Africa so very aware of famine and starving children. Staple food in Africa is maize meal. A bowl of maize meal with vegetables and beans/ meat is healthier and cheaper than other types of foods. Not sure what the staple food is in PI. A thought is that if you fed the children at breakfast club, they will have the engergy to stay awake during school lessons. Its a just thought. Once again hats off to Gold Finger and Caroline and friend for feeding the children. Thanks for a great video.

the people are worried about whether or not that they will have ANYTHING at all to eat per day. i dont think that nutrition even crosses their mind. ive been to the Phils and am married to one 13+ years. and if it wasnt for my wife sending them money alot of the times they would not eat at all.

For me I think I would self insure (if I was retirement age). Right now I'm not old enough for retirement and I have a HSA (health savings account), by time I retire I should have enough to self insure so that's my plan.

Hi @PhilippinesFriend We've also considered self-insurance as an option, especially for medical expenses. Thanks for sharing your plan!

Chong Hua hospital in Cebu City was very good for cardiology - had Calcium CT scan, 2D echo, ECG, Stress Test - very competent, and very cheap compared to the West. Their website has a full price list for medical procedures so its a very transparent process.

Good cardiologist in that hospital & clinics. All the medical test are done by Precision Labs in the city which is a third party company and the results are fast via written paper or electronic. Just leave them your email or phone number.

I am guessing these tests would be $15K to $20K here in America. I have full coverage but my primary is Medicare and it is hard to have Doctors to prescribe these tests unless you are dying.
