James, I live in Appalachia USA. About 7 hrs from Washington DC for reference. In 2001 I had a 16 yr old girl from Ullanbaatar. At that time, they'd jumped from a primitive society straight into the 21st Century technology. She has no last name, just a clan name. So she took her father's first name. They had no mail service in Ullanbaatar. So she sent letters to her parents simply to 4 General delivery Ullanbaatar Mongolia. Her parents had been educated by the Communist. He taught Russian and chemistry in uni. Her mom also a prof. But they were semi-nomadic with their Yurt in the Gobi. Getting their children out of Mongolia to America was her parents soul reason to live! Her brother was in San Diego. She came with $700 strapped to her to send to him. Her name was Uurstaikk. She did her chemistry in Russian. Spoke 4 languages. Later she aligned with Jehovah's witnesses to get sponsored to Univ of Hawaii. She brought preserved horse meat and mare's milk smuggled too. 9/11 happened that fall or I bet she'd of been detained risking that contraband. As you can see Ullanbaatar has made a lot of progress in 23 years. I'm sitting here looking at the tiny Yurt souvenir she brought me so long ago.

WOW Jason! What an incredibly fantastic video with the Mongolian family! I have thoroughly enjoyed all of your many visits to so many unique locations throughout Africa and Asia! I always tell my friends, I've learned much, much more about life through my many travel adventures than I ever did at college/university...haha! You too are gaining such an amazing education about all of the different climates/cultures in this world. I would expect someday you'll be hosting a travel show on the BBC!!! Thank you!

Hi Jason. It's been a while now that I've been watching your videos. What I like most of your videos is that you always explained a little bit of history of the places you visit allied with your amazing personal experience. I love traveling around the world with you. My name is Fernando by the way and I'm half Brazilian half Portuguese and I've been living in Canada for the last 5 years. Thanks so much!!

Thank you for sharing this amazing trip with all of us! So interesting to see such a different way of life than most of us will ever experience. I couldn't help noticing someone looking at an iphone...is there actually service there?
@JasonBillamTravel Жыл бұрын
We didn’t have any service at the Ger - though sometimes on the trip we would randomly find some 3G. They were probably looking at pictures.

I enjoy discovering the nomadic family life, games and singing beautiful, food and traditions. Do you know why do you have to enter the gurt on the left side? And I was a little troubled to see a gun near the tv, I was wondering is it for the animals, is there some wild predator like wolves that attack the kettle? Thank you for sharing your trip, it's a privilege to be able to see those far away land. Hi to everybody! Stay safe! ❤
@boojoo10 Жыл бұрын
The pistol was probably toy one, but almost all of the nomads have guns. If you enter to ger, sometimes you can see a gun, usually rifle, hanging on walls, but most of time they put guns away. They keep guns to protect animals from predators such like wolves and bears or hunting. Even though Mongolians have guns, there are almost zero crimes involved weapon.
@JasonBillamTravel Жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s right, when entering you head left/west. I’m honestly not sure about the gun! Though as @boojoo10 said it might be a toy one. I didn’t ask!
@iinarrab19 Жыл бұрын
@@JasonBillamTravel It was a real one! Haha! We asked and we panicked when they picked it up. They just forgot to put it away I think. Hahaha.
@iinarrab19 Жыл бұрын
I love the fact that there's a gun in 8:21 just lying around hahahaha. Also, Jason is kidding when he said that the horse milk in 17:23 was good 🤣🤣🤣 I just want to say that this video is my favorite so far of the Mongolia series. I got very emotional just reminiscing this! Such wonderful experience. ❤😢
@JasonBillamTravel Жыл бұрын
I didn’t actually realise I’d filmed the gun by accident until it came to editing the video. (I first noticed it while we were sitting down playing drinking games). What are you talking about James? The horse milk was delicious! I wanted to drink it all night!
@mongolian50cent Жыл бұрын
looks like a toy guy cause it's way too glossy, mongolians have rifles to hunt or scare away wolves, people don't really carry around hand guns
@TS-pq8km Жыл бұрын
yes I was wondering if it was a gun for video games @@mongolian50cent

The ger is almost identical to the Kazakh yurt: the roof is shallower, and it doesn't look like Mongolians use felt to cover the structural wooden frame but canvas, but other than that, it's the same. Both even have the shanyrak - the oculus in the center of the roof to allow smoke out and ventilate the inside.
@JasonBillamTravel Жыл бұрын
Interesting to hear. I didn’t do the traditional experience when I visited Kazakhstan so I’m not able to compare. I’ll have to go back and see what it’s like one day.

Thanks for the fascinating journey into Mongolia. I have been following your videos for a while. One question though : I see many clouds up in sky so why is Mongolia so dry. Surely they'll fall as rain sooner or later? Thanks
@JasonBillamTravel Жыл бұрын
It’s to do with a bunch of factors, one being that most of the country sits in a plateau. The time of year I visited was the rainiest (though this is mostly in the north). That’s why the Gobi is much greener than usual, and generally there’s a few more clouds.

Thank you, mate. You know, Your video will be invested in Mongolia so much. But sometimes, no need to invest, maybe, let them live how they are. You can feel Mongolia. The people living in the world do not know about Mongolia; it is not a Western world, Russia, China, or the USA and it is not a world you know. Most of the world's people look at this lifestyle as poverty but actually, it is a life, not a use of unnecessary things.

Warning: my brother, a geologist employed by a mining company, was in the Gobi on a gold exploration mission. He returned home 30 pounds lighter, having contracted a parasite. Apparently this is a common problem in Mongolia.
