My weimaraner passed 3 weeks ago and he has left a huge hole in our lives. He was called Wilhiem, a German name pronounced Viil-hime or Villy for short. You are so right. They need somebody who will exercise them and mentally stimulate them. Wilhiem loved woods so he could follow scent trails. This exercised his brain as well as his body. We could take him anywhere and he was a perfect angel, impressing everybody. However we always preplanned a woods walk beforehand so he was happy to just chill with us. You are a great ambassador for the breed. Wendy

I lost my boy at 13 years of age. He was the greatest dog ever. I jogged with him everyday for 10 of those years, and then long walks and free run as he aged. Just the sweetest boy ever. I was lucky with him i guess, je never had separation anxiety. I left him home alone uncrated for half hour at a time when i first got him. Then slowly left for hours. He also slept through the craziest of thunder storms, never having anxiety.

For separation anxiety, early intervention as a pup helps immensely. I crate trained my puppy from day one to make her crate a safe space for her. She slept in the crate at night ( crate by my bed) and then during the day I moved the crate to the main living area of the house and would have her got into the crate for different periods of the day while I was there with her maybe sitting in a chair nearby or working in the kitchen where she could see me. I left the crate door open and she would go into the crate on her own often, it became a safe place for her as a puppy. Then when leaving the house, I agree with you I started with very short times. I would have her go into her crate, and without making a fuss or saying anything I would go out the door briefly then return. Working up to ten minutes, then taking a short car ride, etc. It is all about trust and keeping the dog calm. Having the dog knowing what to expect and knowing you will return. I found it very helpful to keep my pup as calm as possible before leaving, and not make a big deal about returning to keep the excitement level down.
@xanderemonge Жыл бұрын
this has been the most challenging with him. i started on day one and he still gets anxiety once he realizes he’s actually alone. how many repetitions per day did you do and over how many weeks/months?
@julesmum9781 Жыл бұрын
I've read that they escape or dismantle the crate. What kind of crate do you have that keeps them from doing that?
@xanderemonge Жыл бұрын
@@julesmum9781 i have a regular large size dog crate but exercise and desensitization training quickly solved the breaking out issues. the only issue is he still cries and stays up the whole time as of now. It’s gotten to the point where the vet recommended ssris since his daily 2 hours of exercise and daily training sessions aren’t helping his anxiety.

The first time I met a Weim, I was working a Tim Horton' drive-thru and I could not believe how mellow she was. Her owner said about the same you did, that they need early socialization and lots of stimulation, but she couldn't imagine a better family dog for her and her kids. Our current doggo is a doodle and he's getting old, and the people I'm living with have given me the honour of choosing our next dog and we now live in the Canadian Rockies, so I'm wanting a dog that's easy to groom that I can take on adventures with me....and I keep coming back to Weimaraners. I’ve had Weims for 26 years. I got my first Weim as a puppy, at 8 weeks and have been rescuing adult and senior Weims, ever since. These are the most wonderful dogs. They become so well-bonded with their owners, they are incredibly intelligent, and they are so affectionate. Our Weims sleep in our bed with us, they go on vacations with us, they go to restaurants and they just want to be with us. I lost my 2 seniors this year and still have a 6yr old.

We had 2weims - not at the same time - one after another.They are SOOOO Smart.Ours were from a breeder who had many champions and by the time we got them at 6 weeks old he had them trained to being around noises like children and guns, which was great. Not bothered by fireworks, etc.My husband felt they were the greatest hunting dogs. We had both of ours professionally trained - money very well spent. You can really teach them tricks. My husband travelled for his job & I was a nurse & I worked 12 hr shifts, so I hired a neighbor who would come over to let her out and would toss a ball etc & play with her., or take her on long runs with him. By the time I got home from work he would have her all tired out for the night.She seemed fine with the separation because she knew her friend was coming over to play with her later. Our dogs loved everyone and even those who weren't dog people - they would be won over. We were campers and the dogs were very accoustommed to meeting people - esp. kids - at the campground.They were quite popular, mostly because they were well trained & knew how to behave.Sometimes we'd take them out on our boat on Lake Erie. We'd drop anchor & swim off the boat & the dogs would inevitably try to swim north. My husband would have to swim out & get them. What was it about swimming north? Canada was 26 miles away!! If you want a wonderful pet who you'll be very proud to own - and you can put in the time & money to get them trained - this is a truely wonderful breed.

If you spend to much time on a computer and not playing with them, they will let you know they want attention. Don't neglect them, all they want in life is to be around their person, to have some food, and a few adventures now and again. Be prepared to never use the bathroom alone when you have one and if you do use the bathroom alone when you have a weim, be prepared to find what ever they got into while you were busy.

He gets compliments everywhere we go as he is so good. Just happy to be with us. He is so eager to please us and so fond of food it is effortless to get him to do what we want. Being so smart he is really quick to work out what we want from him. Everything has to be done with love, rewards of praise and treats. Just make it fun and you will find these dogs a dream. Mia was a smaller female, averaged 62-65 lbs and one of the fastest dogs at the dog park outside of a whippet and grey hound. Super snuggly, had an excellent home and my 8 year old son was always trying to get her to stay with him but she always followed my wife. Miss our girl very much.

Found this video little over a year ago now when I committed to my own Weim pup and was researching training tips. I incorporated much of what was said in this video, along with some other tips found on other videos. My Billy is 1.4 years old now and he has grown into a magnificent and loyal companion. He is still maturing and still working on impulse control (namely prey drive control) but by and large, he has turned out better than I expected. I believe the keys are, positive reinforcement training is important as they are very emotionally sensitive, socialization the moment you bring the pup home and incorporating both physical and mental exercises in their daily lives. Weimaraners are not for the novice or lazy, but you also don't need to be a triathlete to have one. But just be consistent with the training, get them outside everyday and challenge their minds and you will have a wonderful companion for the rest of their lives. They are beautiful to look at, garners a unbelievable amount of attention in public (best to be not a introvert because they can literally stop traffic and people will want to meet/touch them). Due to their intelligence, desire to please you and being extremely food motivated, training them will make you feel like a pro trainer. Just be prepared to have a 80lbs/90lbs dog follow you around everywhere you go, because they will stick to you like glue.

All three pointer breeds - Weim, GSP and Vizsla - are the best breeds ever. They have, as said, incredible energy and aren’t for everyone, but if they’re a fit for your family, you will never find a better breed. Just the best. In my experience it doesn’t take anywhere near several hours per day. A couple of thirty minute sessions is plenty for an adult weim. A tired pointer is a happy pointer.

God bless you, Xander! I just adopted Odin the Weimaraner. He lost an eye in an accident but he’s amazing. Only struggle is leash training.
@xanderemonge Жыл бұрын
thanks for watching! for leash training try walking and doing a full stop when he goes in front, so that when the leash loses slack, he gets tugged back, and do it until he starts to realize that he should maintain a loose leash. picture a rope tied to a boulder and the other end tied around your waist, then you running full speed away. once you get to the end of the ropes length you’d get tugged back. you want to simulate that over and over until he realizes that slack in the leash is good and no slack means he’s about to make himself get tugged back. don’t pull it aggressively, just make a solid grasp with about a 1 inch tug until he himself reaches the end of the slack and gets tugged back.

I think one thing that should be mentioned is their prey drive. They were bred to be hunting dogs with many different characteristics, including a powerful chase instince. They are FAST! Their prey drive is intense, which makes them susceptible to chasing "critters" and smaller pets, such as cats. The weims I've had all have had a powerful drive to attack animals such as groundhogs, and frankly, kill them. Cats are the biggest concern. I've had weims since I was in high school, and that's all I've had since I graduated college, and I'm 61 now. All of the weims I've raised myself have been raised with cats, and are fine with them. However, the rescues I've had is hit or miss. Of the three rescues I've had, one was indifferent to the cat, and the cat was actually the boss. The other two? One would definitely eat my cat, and the other was hit or miss. If you have a cat, I think weims should be introduced to them at as young an age as possible. They can be trained at an older age, but their prey drive is super strong. Just like with everything else with weims, they are very trainable, but that prey drive instinct is so strong that for some, their instincts even override their training. Btw, I know what I'm doing in training weims because I've learned their characteristics so well. Also, mine have always been good around small children, but their high energy and desire to play can make them inadvertently knock a small child over just with their exuberance. This is not a criticism, but just a caution to anyone considering getting a weimaraner. Obviously, they're my dog of choice for life, and I don't regret having any of the ones I've had the privilege of being adopted by. They are the most amazing companion and friends ever!

@@xanderemonge she was so sweet. Loved everyone. Passed away 2 years too soon but it's probably for the best. My niece and nephew were just babies but they loved zenyatta, they wouldve been devastated to find out she moved to a farm up state.

Do you know how they compare to viszlas? Great vid. Thanks!
@xanderemonge10 ай бұрын
they're very similar based on viszlas i've seen and my research on them. I've actually been thinking about geting my weim a viszla friend in about 2 years, still deciding if it's a good move or not (keep each other busy, but also more money/training/etc.)

I don't run. I don't exercise. I am very much a couch potato. However, I take my Weim out at least 2 times a day. Forest preserves, off leash so she can run her ass off and chase wildlife. This is more than enough for her in addition to obedience training at home.

That's pretty good for a large breed. We lost my dog's brother a few month's ago at the ripe age of 10 due to a really bad epileptic episode that he couldn't get out of. I'm sorry for your loss, it's never easy losing a furry friend.

I agree with the video, you need to do your research first. Weims, especially the first two years of their lives can be very, very challenging and take a lot of work and constant attention. They can be very willful and need constant vigilance and corrections to behaviors that can become destructive or even dangerous if left unchecked until adulthood. They can be very sensitive dogs and although they need a firm, consistent hand towards training, they can be hurt by harsh words or tones. Many people get an "adorable" Weim puppy and by the first year are getting rid of the dog because it is too hard to handle. It is so unfair on the Weim. That being said if a good relationship is established with the puppy and constant training, exercise, stimulation and attention/affection is shown, the adult dog is a wonderful companion, that really does want to please their owner.

@xanderemonge Жыл бұрын

@dp2677 Жыл бұрын
@Xander Monge She's our wierdo 😋 I've had several Weimaraners, she has been the only lazy one. She's 7 now, so still pretty young. I actually took her to vet multiple times and had all kinds of tests run to make sure she wasn't having medical issues because she's so lethargic at times. She spends about 1/2 her day lounging in bed or on the couch sleeping. At about 9pm, she wants to go to bed & she will relentlessly nudge us & whine until someone goes to bed with her. She stays in bed until breakfast, and that girl NEVER misses a meal 😉 I tried obstacle agility courses with her & scent work training she was far more excited about the car ride than the activities. It was funny, she totally looked like the quintessential bored, disgruntled, teenager the whole time she was at the classes. If sitting in a corner, judging everyone & eye rolling was an option, she would take it. We go for hikes & walks about 2 miles in, she actively starts trying to turn back. She likes playing with the kids but is even happier sitting on the couch cuddling with them. With our other dogs (1 Corso & 2 Malinois), she will play for a bit, but then she wants to sunbath on the porch. Ocassionally, the Malinois get spastic & annoy her, then she sits on them until they are calm & submit. I got her from the shelter I volunteer at, I fell in love with her the moment I saw her. She's beautiful, intelligent, incredibly sweet & affectionate. She was about 1 year old when she was surrendered by her owner because she was gun shy. Although I've had her out with me shooting & she doesn't react to the noise. I suspect the issue is when she decides to retrieve a bird, she doesn't actually bring it back to you, she just eats it. Her prey drive is crazy high, though, compared to other Weimaraners I've had. If there are any critters in the yard, we can't get her to come inside. She will obsessively hunt them down, and then she returns to napping.

Why is your Weim running in an open field with such a long leash on? This is dangerous. If that leash snags on something or wraps around a foot while at speed, he could be injured. Are you bound by some uptight leash law even in that open area?
