IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT NALTREXONE:
- Opiate receptor antagonist (prevents release of “feel-good” endorphins when taking opiates or alcohol)
- First developed in 1963, approved for treatment of alcohol dependence in 1994
- Naltrexone is:
Not a controlled substance, not addictive. Any medical doctor can prescribe it.
Not Antabuse (disulfiram): causes you to feel sick when you drink alcohol.
Not Naloxone/Narcan: fast-acting, reverses effects of opioid overdose.
Not Methadone: a narcotic used to treat withdrawal from opioids but CAN be addictive.
- May take a tablet daily, an injection once a month (brand Vivitrol), or take a tablet one hour before drinking alcohol (the Sinclair method)
- The Sinclair method can eliminate the desire to drink (“extinction”) over time, the amount of time to extinction can vary greatly for different people. In studies, the Sinclair method worked for about 80% of people.
- Rarely, there is an association of liver problems with Naltrexone, so you should research the risk and discuss this with your doctor.
VERY IMPORTANT:
- Those taking opiates regularly must detox from opiates before starting Naltrexone. Otherwise, they could go into withdrawal because Naltrexone blocks the effect of opiates.
- Opiate pain medication will not work on those taking Naltrexone, so health care providers must be informed that you are taking Naltrexone so they can give you a different kind of pain medication.
Note that there is a Medical ID/Health section in cellphones. You can set it to be accessible to Emergency medical personnel even if your phone is locked.
On iPhone: Apple Health App, fill out Medical ID and Emergency Access sections.
- You can still get drunk while taking Naltrexone, but you will not feel as drunk, so caution must be used.

My mom’s cognitive functioning was still declining even after she stopped drinking. I told her about what you said about ammonia in the blood and what it did to you, you mentioned it to her doctor and got on new meds that has drastically improved her cognitive functioning. Not really related to this video but I wanted to thank you for that.

The Lactulose was killing her stomach but the Xifaxxin has done so much to help. She literally went from mumbling and saying random stuff and being so confused to almost all the way back to normal. I thought she had permanent brain damage or that early onset dementia was beginning. Just a testament to how this channel is making a real difference. Thanks LD!

I can’t tell you how THRILLED I am that you’re sharing this information about Naltrexone! ❤️ I’ve been watching your videos for several months and been very hesitant to speak up about this because I didn’t want to overstep your discussions of complete sobriety. I’ve been taking Naltrexone for 1 1/2 years and have seen a SIGNIFICANT change in my drinking habits. Although I still have work to do, I FINALLY have control over my drinking, but have not yet reached extinction (I must be one of the 5-10%…uggg). I practice TSM and it has really been a game changer for me! I’m scared to think where I would be today without it. I haven’t yet checked out your video links, but wanted to add that Claudia Christian also has a documentary out there called “One Little Pill” and she explains a lot about how Naltrexone has worked for her and others. She also talks about how the “recovery” business does NOT want people to know about Naltrexone, because if they did, they might not spend $30K+ on treatment that may or may not work! Anyway Brother, THANK YOU for sharing this life-saving information on your channel, even if it may not include complete sobriety. And THANK YOU to your guest speaker! She is also helping to save lives with her testimony! What an AMAZING message you are sending❣️ Much love & Blessings❣️🥰

It's great to share my excitement with someone else this medication has helped! Like you, I am relishing getting back a sense of control. You know, I was thinking recently that even if it took me 2 years to reach extinction, that would be a tremendous improvement over the trajectory I was headed for - like over-drinking for the next 10 years or until I drank myself to an unpleasant death. I'm not sure if it will keep working at the same level for me but it really helps my motivation tremendously. It's given me real hope now of not going down that road. And that in itself is so valuable. I did not share this, but my mother, a severe alcoholic, committed suicide when I was in my 20s, and alcohol was a major factor in that, possibly the main factor. She was 44. If only she had had something to give her some help and hope that change might be possible.

Hey there! First off, thank you so much for being here! Also, thank you so much for sharing how it's helped you so much! I have not seen that film yet, but I am going to watch it now! I am so happy to hear that it's helped you so much! I really appreciate you sharing how much it's helped you! There is no " one size fits all" in this scenario. What works for one, might not work for the other. I don't think it would have worked for me. I was just too out of control. I don't think I would have had the discipline to take the pill daily. I can already see myself saying that I took it and drinking alcohol and claiming that I was doing the "Sinclair method ". At the end of the day, however we get to the end goal to stop drinking, is all good in my book! I know how hard it is to quit and seeing others get away from it makes me smile everytime! Congratulations on your success! Thank you so much for this!!!! God bless😊😊😊❤❤❤

On the subject of doctors not recommending or knowing about medications for treatment of AUD: I've come across scientific articles that have a pessimistic tone about them. I think it may have something to do with the generally high relapse rate, which may be why the medical community is sceptical about them. That being said, I definitely think that the meds are worth a try. They can save lives. Also, you're absolutely right about needing the motivation to quit. The meds alone won't do it, and I'm speaking from experience. Thank you so much for this interview 👏

I have seen the same thing. Thank you so much for your input here! I know that it's not a one size fits all scenario. But, if it could help one person.... that's all that matters in the end. I was just replying to someone else and I told them that I don't think it would have worked for me. Because, I k ow myself, and I would have just said I was taking the pill and doing the Sinclair method and would have just gotten drunk. I am all too familiar with my warped mind when it comes to alcohol. I have absolutely no control at all. Thank you so much for this! Hope you are having a great weekend! God bless😊😊😊❤❤

I really enjoyed this interview. Lots of great information shared here! In the past, I've heard stuff about different medications for cravings, some good some bad. Of all the medications mentioned, here the only one I've had experience with is Antabuse (Disulfuram) and I absolutely hated it! Apart from it making me sick because I continued to drink while on it, it just made me really tired, lethargic, and weak, and it killed my libido. It certainly didn't do anything to stop my cravings. In my opinion there are better medications that aren't so punitive. Anyway, I'm glad she was able to have success using Naltrexone! Blessings to you and this wonderful community!!

Naltrexone is a tough one for me. I tried naltrexone for a period and I hated it. Similar to Antabuse, I ended up timing when I took it, which I did eventually stop doing. I hated how it made me feel. I felt no joy in ANYTHING. Eating, hearing good music, whatever, life was always floating around at a D-plus C--minus. I stopped using it. I have been sober for over 10 years now. Dulling!!! I felt a dulling of EVERYTHING.

Funny you should say that. I was telling the nurse practitioner at my GPs office about my experience with naltrexone the other day, and she said my experience with it sounded just like her experience taking Ozempic in that it eliminated her cravings relating to overeating or eating unhealthy foods and caused her to not even think about it. Science can be a wonderful thing!

I wonder if you’ll be taking this forever then?
@SkysMomma
@SkysMomma 4 ай бұрын
I wonder, too. I will probably experiment and see how it goes. From the testimonies I've watched, some of the people on the Sinclair method say they will continue to take it indefinitely but just every time an hour before they drink (not daily). And a good portion of those say they eventually completely lost the desire to drink, which I guess means they would not take Naltrexone anymore. I'm back to taking it daily at the moment and haven't had a desire to drink in several weeks, despite skipping taking it for a 6-day period. If I want to have a drink sometime in the future, I intend to once again make sure I take it an hour before and see if I can limit myself to one or two drinks. If not, I would definitely resume taking it daily (if I had stopped taking it daily at that point). One thing I need to do more research on is to see if there's much data on whether Naltrexone loses effectiveness over time so that you would need to keep upping the dose. I've seen a little bit of talk saying that it can. If so, I imagine that would happen more quickly if I took it daily for a long time. Another thing I've read is that some people feel that the Naltrexone blocks other pleasurable feelings, too. It doesn't for me, but for those that do experience that, there is discussion about whether the breaks from taking the medicine that the Sinclair method gives may help people avoid that feeling of it dulling down normal pleasurable feelings.
