I bought this exact bike 2020 brand new and I still got it. After only 1200 KM on the bike I have had two major problems on it already. I still love this 690 engine and have had it in three bikes so far. I am in a battle with myself now If I am going to convert this biker to a supermoto this winter or keep it in the Enduro form. I was thinking about the standard 890 Adventure. People that review that bike says it is still great for the street even though it has 21" front and 18" back tire just like this bike. You sacrifice maybe 15% of on road performance/handling on the tarmac compared to the SMC-R but you get much better off-road capability. So maybe it is better to keep the bike in it's enduro form and save a lot of money that it would cost to convert it to a supermoto. I will have to watch this video to the end and the other "2019 KTM 690 enduro R Review" that Chopsy has since it will be interesting to hear how much of a sacrifice the enduro makes on the road. Me being 200cm tall (6'7) I feel that I have to raise the handle bars a bit to be able to stand up more comfortable though, so that is something I will have to do if I keep in as an enduro bike.

The one piece of advice i could give you is to feather the clutch when riding hill climbs off road, I watched your hill climb and you didn't have a finger on the clutch, if you feather the clutch when climbing it will prevent stalling at low RPM as you climb, correct clutch control is key, hope this helps :)

Re the brakes. I actually took a 2015 SMCR on the extended Trans America Trail in 2015 (7,350 miles 85% off road) fitted with TCK 80's and found that the front brake was so sensitive and progressive "feel" wise that it never gave me a problem even when descending very steep, very rocky, very scary, narrow one lane goat tracks coming down the rockies with 2000 foot drop offs to one side. Generally the wide front tyre made life much harder than the narrow 21 inch front wheel would have done and I would not recommend using a SMCR for the TAT, but the actual front brake was unbelievably good both on and off road. It has 4 separate pads in it by the way, for those who don't know, which helps the progressive feel factor.

Change the seat; fit additional fuel capacity; mount an ADV tower and lights; add obligatory handlebar riser, handguards and steering damper; spec some decent soft luggage and set off to the continent of your choice. All adds up to a very expensive package indeed but the 690 enduro is arguably the ultimate long distance adventure platform for on and off road capability and practicality with its modest yet high tech features (less chance of leaving you stranded) and manageable weight.
@dougiequick12 жыл бұрын
I have one and I do have a Seat Concepts seat but all I use is the stock one it is fine..the bars are fine....I DID install Cycra handguards along with their handlebar clamp mounts which effectively doubles the strength of the bars from ever bending and totally protects the master cylinders and levers. I also change the horribly fragile stock blinkers for cheap tiny Chinese LED blinkers along with a an adjustable rate blinkers relay. I also replaced the awful board anchor blazing hot stock catalytic/ muffler with a Wings unit. Then too a very light but stout carbon fiber skid plate. And the ABS dongle is must to keep the ABS off in the rear. A shorty clutch lever helped me a lot as well as some really large pegs which one $69 ebay for Fast way clones called "Nice CNC" They so far hold up well still like new! Anyway it is a heavy motorcycle for a single but on the other hand it is also a hundred pounds lighter than any of the twin cylinder adventure bikes....oh the stock mirrors are fragile also so put the ball jointed after market mirrors on which are not real light but they work well enough....I picked up a clone luggage rack on AliExpress for $70ish delivered and I mean it is an EXACT clone of one of the best most expensive racks...I actually think it must be from the same maker just the brand name puts their name on and triples the price..... this motorcycle has flat delivered me through areas I could not EVEN get through on my old 650 Vs trim....It is plush and easy to handle for anyone with some experience...but it IS pretty tall...

You are absolutely correct. If you are just learning offroad riding then a smaller bike is truly the way to go. You will learn faster that way. Lighter and more forgiving when mistakes are made. However, you will get to a point where the CRF250L just won't be enough. You will grow out of the smaller bike, that is when you go and grab a 690. I fully understand the dilemma of choosing between super moto to enduro but the 690 enduro cuts it so close, I would go for the enduro just because of its superior versatility. The only other alternative is have both, but few can afford the high price of both and they are so close in nature to each other. So enduro adventure and versatility for me, over dedication to surgical speciality on the road, which will only get you into trouble.

Sm or Enduro decision for someone that enjoys off-road? I think you know the answer. The bike is 85-90% the Sm on road but you can go explore the green lanes etc. No brainer for me. I've been looking for a dual sport solution with great road performance and keep coming back to the 690 but the weight keeps me questioning its usefulness off road. I don't want a bike I have to service every other week either. If the 690 was £7-8k I think I'd be down my local KTM dealer sorting out a deal but at £9.5k that's a little hard to swallow.

@@LambChopRides This is my setup on my 2012 690 Enduro. The Enduro back than had a shorter front fork length than the SM version, which made the Enduro the do-it-all solution. If you buy a 690 SM and mount enduro wheels on it (and the forklength on the 2019 SM 690 is still the same as in 2012) you will be leaning back. While if you buy an 2019 690 Enduro, you can mount 17 inch Supermoto wheels on it, it drives a little more sporty/nervous than an 690 sm with sm-wheels but I am completely fine with it. But please compare front fork lengths, if this is still the same as it was for the 2012 models. Swapping SM wheels to enduro wheels is like 15-20 minutes work (not hurrying), and you can have different rear sprockets on the supermoto and enduro setup which is desirable I think.

Great video John, I can very much see the appeal of this bike (and am actually glad it has the minimal dash rather than the TFT the 390 has) but £9.5k, that is a LOT of dosh, especially as a new exhaust would be on the cards too. I'd bloomin love one of these as it'd be ace for my UK adventures as well as being capable of getting into Europe too.... Hmmm dilemmas :D

Whats ur take on the 2019 ktm 690 vs 2019 husky 701? With the new Electronics package in the ktm - do you think it is a better bike than the husky? If we strictly look on the bikes, not the economy
@Davidkxf5 жыл бұрын
The SMC-R will do those gravel lanes with no problem at all. We have done some proper multi-day off-road trips into some gnarly mountains on SM's with road tires, including river crossings and being chased by Buffalo's.

is the seat like sitting on a thin wall?

No its comfortable enough providing you get off every hour or so. They do break-in a little over time too with use Ive noticed.

Buy a Sweet Cheeks with two 1.5 litre gas bottles, slap an Airhawk inflatable pad over that and you can ride this puppy for 300-400 miles without blinking. It isn't the prettiest solution, but truly turns the bike into a genuine adventure touring bike with additional gas capacity kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGGvZKZ5pciBppo

They nicknamed the old Honda XR650R the Big Red Pig commonly abbreviated "BRP" So I knick Ames my 2020 690enduro R "BOP" or Big Orange Pig....or "The Big Bopper"

Are there many green lanes near you, I don't think we have many in our part of the country, I'm in Norfolk.
@motorbiketoureruk5 жыл бұрын
Honestly chops you need to get down to Devon to do some lanes, they are proper shitty rutted lanes
@roo4503 жыл бұрын
Good lanes in Devon?
@motorbiketoureruk3 жыл бұрын
@@roo450 well no lanes are that good any more as there isn’t enough of them! Apart from wales, most lanes around where I live are more like trialing

Excellent video! I have owned mine here in the United States for just under 4 months. I love it! This feels like the unicorn bike I have been looking for. You mentioned in your video that your wheels are tubeless. Ours come with tubes here in the US and are fitted with a different brand of tires. (TKC80)

Stephen Sherwin only once or twice. About a 1000 miles so far on the bike.

What would think about the offroad capability of the new SMCR? I've seen quite a few guys put some Perelli Scorpions on and do some amazing offroad riding.
@LambChopRides5 жыл бұрын
Yes sure an experienced offroader could do well on the SMCR but the stiff suspension with short travel is going to limit its ability ultimately...

These bikes have a really bad reputation for having many problems no matter what. Is that true ? I'd love to buy myself a SMC-R 690 2019YM but i'm a little afraid of what they say about KTM's reliability.
5 жыл бұрын
I've had KTM's since 2003 and have never had an issue with any of them.
@7starsfear5 жыл бұрын
@ I have posted on a KTM fansite yesterday and they pretty much told me that if im not ready to spend 700-1000 per year for maintenance i should consider buying a Honda. Rocker arms braking, constant valve checks, ect.
@7starsfear5 жыл бұрын
@ I tried it on a test ride and the 690 SMC-R felt so good. But i can't shake off the fear of trading in my bike and giving the dealer 6000eu for something people warn me about. I know it's a performance bike and it needs constant love, and i CAN provide it with all the oil and filters it wants. But i'm afraid of bigger issues the 690 is rumored to have. EDIT : i am referring to the rocker-arm problem
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've followed the rocker arm problem as well. They had isolated problems up to and including 2014 models. But if I got one of the older bikes, I would replace the arms with the latest version ASAP. I have a few friends with the older bikes and they haven't had a problem, but many have.
@7starsfear5 жыл бұрын
@ the newer ones maybe fixed this ? Because the bike i am looking at is brand new 0 kilometers. Also i didn't ask the KTM dealer what is covered by their warranty (which you can extend up to 4 years).
