The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is one of my favourite saloon cars, so getting to spend the week with one was something I was looking forward to. There are many things I love about this car, but there are also a few things that challenge me. In this video I am as honest as I have ever been on a review. Can the things I love about this car win me over so that I can forget the things I don't like ?
Thanks to Alfa Romeo UK for letting me have the car. I hope they and you appreciate my honesty.

Working for a performance manufacturer, I can confirm the front wheels skipping is normal in low grip situations and is caused by the front geometry (including Ackerman principle plus camber change) that can be worse with rear wheel drive pushing when on full lock. It is nothing to worry about and can sometimes be improved with different tyres. Don't let it put you off buying the car🤔 Another great vid when you were clearly cold and tyred (get it!) 👍

Hi Pete, the steering angle has been mentioned by others. I used full winters on mine and the noise went, my confidence increased and race mode was easily available. Then when the weather improved I put the PZero’s back on. I never thought it needed 4x4, being able to use the power through the rear is more fun (with the right tyres!) It is an incredible car and way more individual than any of its competitors. Keep up the great work 🥇

You seem to get massively hung up on summer tyres and traction on a high power rwd car in the winter...... I’m running Goodyear Supersport tyres on mine and the traction for a powerful rwd car is ridiculously good. That torque vectoring differential is excellent. It puts my previous high power rwd cars to shame (F82 M4, E92 M3 etc) I agree the exhaust thing is silly from AR, but it’s like £300 to have rectified by various aftermarket companies....not exactly a big deal is it. The tyres skipping is down to akerman geometry, it does it on various other cars like the cayman, TT etc. Just a small trade off for the better steering. Buy one, fit PS4S or GY SS tyres and fit the exhaust module. Job done ✅

Seriously. It was late and I was tired when I watched this and I actually got mad and knew I had to turn in at that point. Half the video complaining about the tires is like getting a shiny new phone and then complaining about the case. Change the case! You should be complaining to whomever loaned the car with a poor tire choice for regional conditions. Anyway, otherwise, I really like this guy.

Peter you have never given a review that wasn`t honest, its not in your nature, its how your parents brought you up, and it is what we expect and receive every time. The thumping noise when it appears may be something to do with the power steering trying to cope with the cold but I can`t say for sure, so thank you once again for showing us your work and the car, so see you on the next one.

Great to see a review like this for the Giulia. I’ve got the Veloce and get the tyre noise too. It’s the only car I’ve ever had that does this and it’s good to know it’s normal, thankyou for showing this. Alfa ownership in the U.K. is not much fun when you need to go to the main dealer, but the car is good enough to put up with this. I can’t find a better alternative as a daily car. 👍

Pete...wearing my old man hat, my new Ford Cortina 2000e in 1975 came with a set of Pirelli Cinturato’s and they were awful..hard as iron, no grip and heavy as lead to park. There were so bad that my mother pleaded with me to sell the car not least because it made me “....look like an old man”, However I had to carry my Dad’s wheelchair so the replacement was a 1977 Cortina 2.0 Ghia which came wearing Michelin’s and it was a transformation! So..45 years later, nothing changes!!! I’m glad you liked the Alfa...I e just never been brave enough to buy one! Stay safe..😃😃😃😃😃Richard

I think the solution to your problems (except the ackerman) is the Giulia Veloce Q4... AWD and a much more manageable 280hp. I have one and is a marble. Great to go on the mountains on those cold wet days. Still faster than 95% of what you found on the normal roads. Only just not that track focused. And you can get it with full camel colored leather... You don't get the V6 sound but you don't get the MPG either.

As many others have said, the "wheel skipping" on full lock is to do with the front wheel geometry. My 981 gen Cayman GTS does the same when cold. Gets better as the tires warm up. Had P-zeros on the Porsche.

Another great car review/ insight into your working life Pete. It brought a lot of memories back to me as I spent a large part of my career travelling around the U.K. I purchased a slightly used demo. Giulia Quadrifoglio back in 2017, I didn't keep it for long but your observations are spot on. Yes it's a brilliant car with excellent steering, power, great soundtrack and it has character, which is refreshing in this day and age. All that said though, it never won my heart for some reason, some cars do and some just don't. It does need the race sound in dynamic, I couldn't be bothered modding it to achieve that, come on Alfa!! And yes, the Pirelli Corsas, in my opinion, are awful! I didn't like them in the summer never mind the winter. You should try driving the Giulia QV in the snow, hilarious! Mine too skipped around car parks etc. I did check the tyre pressure a couple of days after picking it up and all the tyres where over inflated by nearly 1bar, great dealership! That lessened the skipping. I soon changed the tyres to Michelin Pilot Supersports (MB designated ones to get the correct size) they transformed the car hugely for the better. Then I sold it! I may take your advice and revisit Alfa and try out. Stelvio QV... Good work as ever Pete ......

Had the same issues with the ackerman steering on my diesel Giulia but it did get a lot better with new front tyres fitted. The steering is the same, super sharp and very direct making it a joy to drive down back roads. The handling and long distance ride comfort are exceptionally good, just a shame even the "basic" petrol model is so expensive now. A used Quadrifoglio will surely be a fantastic buy knowing Alfa's typical depreciation.

I'm north of Milan and on my Giulia 2.0 200HP I have 4 winter tyres now. I can't imagine how could it be with a QV up there now! Yes, DEFINITIVELY put winter tyres! That "wheel thing" is due to geometry of front suspension. To have that sharp steering and adherence you have to deal with that. No problem if you ask me. There is even an official bulletin that explain why it happens.

You and Joe A do good, balanced reviews, always appreciated. Edit - That noise from the front end is common (in my experience) on cars with a stiff front axle. I forget what it’s called, but there is name for it and it’s where the tyres don’t have the give when they’re cold to cope with the lateral load the axle is putting through them. My Panamera did exactly the same thing, and it’s normal. It’s partly why the Alfa has such great steering feel.

Yes Ackerman angle. They all do it. I recently acquired a Veloce and it does the same (most noticeable reversing). Great cars. I considered the QF but 500 bhp just too much in a road car to fully enjoy. Haven’t regretted it for a minute. The steering on Giulia’s really is something quite special. So direct.

Nice review. Concerning the issue on the steering, well it is simply the way they set the Akermann angle (maybe the priority at Alfa was not the smoothness in low speed parking maneuvers). Concerning the exhaust valves, you are right: coding is super simple :-) Honestly these is a small issues...the Quadrifoglio is a fantastic car: every time I take she it puts a smile on my face (even if it is cold and the road is wet)
@edovol3
@edovol3 3 жыл бұрын
...by the way, on cold and wet roads, when you go full steering, several other cars (e.g. 997 turbo and Boxster Spyder) do the same noise (this happens for a combination of the Akermann angle and the LSD engaging on the rear axle). The strange and unfair thing is that people are only complaining for the Giulia....

Great video Peter, really enjoyed it, interesting about the front wheel turning, we have a Gullia Veloce that we have owned for about three years, we have the same thing happening but it's very rare, and having the std 280hp four cylinder engine we have no problem with traction, the only time we had a real concern was when our dealer put dodgey tyres on the rear instead of the Bridgestone's it came with, needless to say we got the proper tyres fitted after a fashion and the car was back to normal. We love our Guilia, and as Jeremy Clarkson said when he drove a QV, to be a proper Alfa it has to have something wrong with it!!

Thanks Pete - I always enjoy your reviews. A good follow-up I think would be to ask the UK Alfa press office about fitting high performance all season tires on this very car for a cold weather comparison drive. This can be an excellent daily driver in all but deep snow conditions. The P Zero Corsas aren’t even supposed to be stored below 0C let alone driven on so while you can blame the OEM spec tire, it’s not really a flaw in the car itself. Anyway, a companion review would be really informative - and you might get to drive it for another week 😉.

Pete, you gave this a decent review. That being said, the solution to 90% of the issues you kept harping about was a simple installation of winter tires for the car in cold climates. I live in California with my 2019 Giulia Veloce, and I have summer P Zero's on it. I have no issues. I never get the problem with the steering noises either, but it rarely drops below 40F here even at night in winter. So, those Corsa Pirelli's are not for U.K. conditions in winter. Or Minnesota in the USA either! ha ha Otherwise, these Giulia models are terrific cars with so many things that make them special. I call it my Jr. Ferrari Sedan! ha ha Cheers friend.

The Guilia is a stunning looking car but it hardly has any competition in its class for looks. Alfa are my favourite brand in this field, owned a few over the years and despite people warning me of the trouble I was going to have it was always them left eating their words, never had a moments problem with any of them and this all despite putting huge mileage on some of them in short periods of time. The steering judder you experienced used to happen in my 159 and it also happens from time to time in my AM Vantage and I always put it down to Ackerman angles as I reasearched it before. Its odd the first time you experience it and almost feels as though the tyres are skipping. Great review and honest review Pete, there isn't a car that doesn't have its foibles.

I do like to see behind scenes stuff. That gear change pop is lovely in the car. The Jaguar was a pain just trying to move in snow slush today, only went 0:25 mile up to the top of our drove to get the new windscreen fitted. Was defo a Shogie Bear day here near Spalding. Having a rear wheel drive powerful car is nice, but, power is no good without control lol. Cool video, as always.

I’ve had a Quadrifoglio for 2 years on the P Zero Corsa, now I’m on Pilot 4S and the car is transformed. No more tyre skip turning out of the drive every morning or white knuckled driving on a cold wet day waiting for the rear end to step out. Best upgrade ever, except maybe for the Forza exhaust bypass for Race sound in every mode!

Hi Sir Pete. It’s a beautiful car!! To be honest I’m watching some of this review now and will have to finish it later. I’m just running on almost no sleep and it’s finally sleep time lol (I work 3rd shift and with my kids doing online learning I’m getting very very little sleep!)

Hi Pete, Great vid as always! I'd tend to agree re the tyres, I will try Michelins when I wear out the P Zero Corsa's on mine. The 'wheel skip' is a function of the ackerman angle aspect of the steering geometry, and is in fact only one wheel scrubbing (the outer one). Agreed it feels slightly strange at first but is due to a reasonably extreme geometry setup and is a slightly annoying side effect of other advantageous steering characteristics (predominantly when not anywhere near full lock), particularly the very positive turn-in etc. The Alfa is not the only car with tyre scrub characteristics on full lock, my F-Pace did it as well for example. Keep up the great work, you look really busy at the moment! All the best Gregg

The recent ackermann angle modification has solved the issue. On my Giulia 180 CV I have the same issue, usually when temperature is less than 15°C. When I fit the wither tyres, the problem disappear in any condition.However, when you have driven for some km, even if it is very cold, the problem does not appear also with summer tyres.

If I remember correctly, when you turn the steering wheel the outside road wheel turns into the corner more than the inside wheel (or possibly vice versa). I suspect when the tyres are warm this difference in tracking is accommodated by the tyres, however, when you are driving on unsuitable tyres on a cold slippery road surface, the inside tyre will skip laterally, causing the vibration you heard. If that were my car, I would take it in to have the tracking checked and, if it was within tolerance, I wouldn't worry about it. In any case, suitable tyres would be a benefit.

Its a WELL KNOWN effect. Has something to do with the front wheels not having a clean ackerman geometry when steering, which gives the QV this incredible sharp turn in and steering feel (for a sedan). The noise is caused by the car basically pushing over the inner wheel, if at full lock + slow speed + chilly conditions + cold tyres. This is an attribute of MANY serious performance cars, mostly dedicated sports cars.

Pretty sure the skipping wheels is the Ackermann effect. Happens on pretty much all modern Porsches and nowadays anything with a big enough wheel! I remember following up on it for my 987.2 when in for a service

Pedro, I'm slightly uncomfortable a title of "My most honest review EVER!" which is a bit click-baity and could infer that not all your reviews are this this honest. As a long term fan of the channel I know all your reviews are honest so perhaps I have misunderstood this title and hope you can explain? Anyway, it's looking like this weekend could be critical for the UK car industry. Hopefully it won't suffer a £100bn hit and massive job losses that industry insiders say would be the consequence of no deal brexit and a less impactful deal will be struck. The review itself was excellent as ever. Keep making the content.

Thanks for the feedback. Titles need to have a touch of intrigue to generate views. I do indeed always try to be balanced in all my content but felt I have this car a harder time that usual 😬👍

Great video. I had a similar issue with the car skipping on full lock on my a45. It was resolved when I had the front wheels repaired to remove a scuff. The repairer of the wheel said it was very slightly buckled and that the tracking was also out of alignment. Doubt this is the issue in the brand new Alfa but if it’s a press car could have been driven hard over a speed bump or something
