I owned the original NC700X, and have since tested the 750S and 750X. The engine is nice and low revving, the storage was very handy (I could often go out without any luggage attached) and the newer DCT is much better than on my 700. Some quirks or annoyances I had were; most uncomfortable seat on any bike I’ve owned (no padding, too narrow, nasty slope that pushes you toward the tank), although I believe an aftermarket seats could resolve this, the low revving nature means there’s virtually no engine braking so you use the brakes a lot more, which are rather wooden and under-powered (even the Cb500X has 2 discs up front), the fuel cap really should be on the outside of the bike like the BMW F800 series - if you pack something on the back seat you have to remove it to fill up, plus the fuel cap just comes off. The fuel economy is good but I get exactly the same on my 750GS, with 20hp and 20Nm torque extra, which highlights this bike’s real downside - it just doesn’t have quite enough go. It’s very popular with couriers as its bulletproof but it’s not as much of a bargain compared to when it was first released (mine was £5350 new for reference) and I feel there are better options out there for an everyday bike. However, Honda should get kudos for making a bike that riders can own who cannot use clutch and gears due to disability.

I frequently achieved 100mpg on my 2015 NC750-X DCT. The NC is only slow compared to other bikes. It is way faster than the majority of cars. I would like to see Honda give it either shaft or belt drive and cruise control. Sure, it would be more expensive, but I reckon lots of people would be happy to pay for it...

@@BibtheBoulder Really? They had DCT in 2015? I had thought that a little more recent than that but I could be wrong. I get the idea of reliability with belt or shaft drive and the quiet and less maintenance; and I have it on on my big cruiser; but on a bike where my riding might have me wanting to be able to alter my gearing for lower 1st gear not for more power but for slower speed I still like to be able to choose what I want as this is meant to be a adventure bike not just a roady.

M H: Interesting how different people like different things. I appreciate why you and many others would like to see more power and higher RPM on this bike but for me the high torque more relaxed engine is the exact reason I like it most. More than most other bikes of similar or near similar capacity. Also the low weight due to engine layout and the type of valve adjustments rather than shims. Sadly This year Honda decided to no longer sell this bike in my country. Time to go with another dealer for a different bike I guess. Someone who wants to sell bikes.

Had one of these a couple of years ago, my flip helmet at the time easily went in. As you say they all vary. Fuel consumption was excellent I agree... pottering around the lanes here in the Lake District it would easily do 85-90mpg! It also had the optional centre stand and aftermarket heated grips. Interesting review 👍

I drive the predecessor the NC700S. It had two owners before me and almost 50 000km on the clock and it still runs like it just left the bike-shop. The NC is a great bike if you just want to go out and ride and ride and ride. Nothing you would choose if you need speed and want to do quick overtakes but it will certainly be able to pass a tractor or some other slower vehicle with no problem. Never had an issue with overtaking cyclists on the spot or anything like that. The storage in the front is just fantastic. Especially for a beginner you can just put all your stuff in there and go on a ride without buying some bags, paniers or wearing a rucksack. :-)

you can change the rider modes as your riding 😊 and in sports mode I found it had plenty of go to over take, in standard mode being good I got 90 mile to the gallon 😁. a great bike for a all year rounder and daily commuter.

I have some arthritis in my left hand which makes using the clutch lever on conventional bikes a little painful. Purchasing my 2017 NC750 DCT has meant that long term ownership and riding is now possible. I have no problem with the amount of power the bike makes, as already stated, the sport modes are quite brisk enough. The seat and rear shock were dreadful so I fitted a shad seat (now discontinued) and a Nitron shock. Although expensive the Nitron has transformed the bike, it just glides over the bumps. The forks are, I think, quite adequate. As TMF said, it's very easy to move the bike in and out of the garage and seat height suits my 5' 8" frame. I saw the new NC750 at the London show in February and liked the improvement that Honda (at last) have incorporated.
@PhilipBallGarry
@PhilipBallGarry 2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with your choice of replacement shock 👍. I had a Nitron fitted to my Versys 650 and it transformed the comfort and handling. The initial outlay is a lot, but according to Nitron the rebuild cost (when it's time) is less than £100 and you wouldn't even get a new OEM shock for that much - and they aren't serviceable either 👍.

Just a couple things left out were assessments of the suspension and pillion comfort. I could easily see a day out with a friend and side cases, and that inevitable itch when presented with some twisties! Great review. Great choice if you ride daily and need to count on it, or if you have a more "emotional" bike in the garage that will only give you a couple of comfy hours in the saddle. Thanks!

My 750x manual was one of the first 750's in the uk ( 2014) fitted yss valves in the forks the early bike's had hard forks, heated grips and lower rear links ( 30 mm), and modified the cluch leaver to make it lighter to pull and i get 80+ mpg down to 76 mpg on motorway at 85+ mph . At 72 with arthritis this bike will last me to the end of my riding days ,

The NC700 (previous generation), replaced the NT700, Deauville, with it’s shaft drive. Presented as the practical replacement. Much was made of it’s fuel economy. They used to say that it had “half a Honda Jazz (Fit USA) engine”. The NT700 Deauville was a bullet proof work horse and it was a shame to see the mid-range shaft drive go. Having said that, these NC750s are staying the course and seem very popular as a mid-range good all-rounder bikes. I expect MRA Vario windshields might be an improvement.

I agree, despite being mocked by the biking press, the Deauville was an impressive and as you say, bullet proof bike. It should have been developed not taken off the market. I'd prefer a shaft drive over a DCT any day.

as others have said, a great all-rounder, a thinking persons bike, no rocket ship but practical and frugal, which is very welcome now days. 90mpg isn't difficult out of town and on a gentle throttle, single front disc more than adequate adds to low running costs, big service intervals and easy valve checking/adjustment add to the low cost of ownership. an unsung hero and a very good do it all type of bike.

My experience from 9 months ownership. Buying the centre stand and extra light kit makes it far more practical. You can change mode on the move by just shutting the throttle after you select the mode. I get about 150 miles before the warning fuel low level comes on, average consumption is low 70s. Touring with throw overs is a pain because you have to take them off to fill up. Seat is good for about 200 miles then gets a bit bum ache. My Rpha70 fits in the frunk no problem. I have the manual version, clutch action is light as is the gearbox no false neutrals, clutch lever lacks adjuster though. A good practical everyday bike which is exactly why I bought it. Nice review.

I agree with your comments. I have a 2012 700X and the lights are crap at night - definitely not one for high speed riding on unlit rural roads. A centre stand is a must - Honda want £150+ as an aftermarket accessory. The previous owner had fitted handguards and heated grips and a taller Honda screen. I fitted a variable Puig flip-up extension as I am 6 foot. Keeps all the wind off well. MPG as you say should be in the 80's unless you are redlining everywhere and riding like a complete eejit. I guess you will achieve better fuel consumption when the engine gets properly bedded in. As for touring, going on my first next weekend to Southern Ireland. 20kg is the max loading, 5kg each pannier and 10kg in the top box. Plus of course the wonderful 'frunk' as the Americans will call the front storage space. I just wish mine had DCT

I have the '21 model on a '22 plate, I also got the showroom pack with topbox, centrestand, side pipes, fog lights and charging port in the frunk, got the panniers as well, strangely as they are £1008 addition. I must add the the OEM fog lights add soo much light at night, they really do make a difference, without them night riding would be a lot harder. Also modes can be changed on the move by simply rolling off the throttle. You mentioned the mode left is picked back up upon start up, I may be missing something but my always starts in standard no matter what I left her in. Keep up the good work.

I get my Shoei helmet in the frunk easily. Incidentally I recently did a trip from South Warwickshire to Lymington via the M40/A34/M3/M27. The traffic was very light (no doubt due to me leaving at 05:00am) and I was happy to tootle along at 60mph. The NC was showing 108.4mpg when I made my first stop in Brockenhurst. On my return I did 'make progress' and it returned 78mpg. I am lucky enough to own 3 bikes, but if I could only have 1, it would 100% be the NC. It is the most practical motorcycle I have ever owned in 43 years of riding.

The NC750X is possibly the best bike that Honda makes, and undoubtedly one of the best bikes on sale today. When Honda launched the NC700 in 2012 it didn't look revolutionary, but it was. Such an amazingly well-rounded, practical and economical motorcycle. And why more companies haven't copied the tank helmet storage baffles me, it's 100% brilliant.

Nice review, Mr Flyer. I've had my 2022 DCT since January and agree with most of your review, although I do have a couple of points that differ. First.....that saddle - whoever designed it should be made to ride it all day every day till the end comes, which won't be long. Second, the weird Checking of the Oil Ceremony. Honda says the bike must be upright and level, and unless you have a partner to hold it, that means putting it on the centerstand with a block to prop the front wheel. Very odd! Next, the position of the horn and turn signal buttons. At least once a day, I hit the darned horn instead of the turn signals. You mentioned it yourself and so have others. I've had no problems with fitting any of my helmets in the frunk, but I wear a medium. As to the MIA center stand and heated grips and cruise control..... (makes the rubbing fingers gesture indicating greedy corporate philandering). Finally, the cable that opens the rear saddle to give access to the fuel filler came adrift! I could not remove either saddle and have had to bring it to the dealer for service. Even THEY couldn't get it off and had to call Honda in Japan, who also had no procedure. Apparently, mine is now a test case for Honda. Ha! Notoriety at last!

As an A2 license holder I got myself a Svartpilen 401, most beautiful motorcycle I´ve ever seen. But there is a part of me that would really fancy the Forza or X-ADV 750 as my next bike. I sat on the Forza before and it is a perfect fit for my 6´1`` body, extremely comfy but due to the DCT you can enjoy some shifting when you want to. Just throw some additional storage and an aftermarket exhaust on there and you´ve got the ultimate commute/tour/fun vehicle...

Thanks for this review, TMF. I think I am going to get one (from 2016 to 2020 model due to the seat being higher) as a general run about bike. The DCT in traffic and the very low center of gravity are what swayed me. Btw, Honda went a bit weird with seat heights on this bike. The original NC700X had a seat height of 795 mm, then from 2016 to 2020 the NC750X went up to 830 mm and from 2021 it went down to 800 mm again. I've seen a number of people complaining about legs being cramped on this bike and it must be due to the various models being all over the place.

Great review yet again ;-) I had the bike for a test ride last week. I was curious about the dct gearbox. This honda surprised me in a few ways. The handling as you mentioned, felt really good. You can definitely feel that low centre of gravity - very easy to lean into corners and very stable when going in a straight line. The seat is very low. I ride Yamaha mt07 and honda adv350 scooter and they both feel taller in comparison. Great little bike, however... The dct in drive mode is just bad (it might be ok for car drivers who hop on the bike on occasion). Sport mode is much better but not amazing. The manual mode shows the engine's real potential which is not bad. I bet if you ride it every day, you could learn to ride it more effectively. I don't dismiss the bike nor the dct gearbox but at this point, it is not for me. In my opinion, this bike with an auto box leans more into the scooter territory rather than a motorcycle one. If you try to ride it like you would a conventional bike, you'd be disappointed. I found myself fighting with the gearbox on a few occasions while trying to overtake when I dropped a gear to go and when I went for it, the dct upshifted taking my oomph away. I suppose you could learn how to use it to avoid that. The storage did not take any helmets I tried, nevertheless, it is a useful addition.

Excellent review and as a previous owner of the 2021 NC750 I would agree that it is a good looking, practical, economical all round motorcycle with a peppy engine. Just one correction, riding modes can be changed on the go, you only have to shut the throttle momentarily for it to change. However, there is a reason why I am an ex owner. Firstly, I don’t know if it was just my bike, or whether it is typical, but after six months of ownership some of the finishes, particularly on the exhaust silencer, were deteriorating badly. The main problem I had however, was with Honda’s Customer Services. I won’t go into the details, other than to say that when issues arose Honda’s response was to deny any responsibility and blame me. Sadly, from what I have read on the internet, mine is not an isolated instance. So, my conclusion would be a good all-rounder, let down by some quality issues and dreadful after sales support from Honda.

As a Honda man, it pains me to say it, but they are very badly finished. Loads of mild steel which will rust in the plain air. The ABS ring will be brown in a year or two for all year round riding. Terrible paint finish on the engine cases but then it is a budget bike.

I have a CTX700 and NM4 which share the same engine design as the NC750x. Honda really hit it home with how the engine is so low set. Handling is a breeze on the CTX and NM4 so I assume the NC is no different. I would also assume the DCT has gotten much better since my 2015 NM4 and it seem to be that way when I rode the Rebel 1100 DCT. DCT is the way to go if your in lots of traffic. And as far as cost of maintaining the bike goes if its anything like my CTX and your confident of doing the work yourself its very affordable and easy to work on. The only things I haven't done yet are chain and sprockets and tires but everything else was super easy to get to and very straight forward to work on. Even the valves are no problem to adjust as their tappets instead of shims. I may have to add an NC750 to my fleet of bikes in the future

An adjustment must be made on all things. Don't ride much at night-deer in our area.!! Lots of dead ones lately, hit by something. Disaster on a bike. Always a good review-love that color., and the mode indicator light. 👍👍🏍🏍🏍🙋‍♂️

Excellent review! My limited experience with the DCT leaves me to wonder if all Honda’s DCT’s are equally functional. In what ways has the DCT improved over time? Are they measurably better on certain models? What riding styles do they suit; what riding conditions/situations challenges the DCT? An review devoted to the DCT would be very interesting.

The DCT on the NC engine is very smooth because of the mid range power and an advantage to the manual because of the shorter first three gears in the 21 on models using the engine. On the Africa Twin it’s a bit less smooth because of the increased power. I am going to guess it’s extremely smooth on the mighty gold wing because that’s a super multi cylinder smooth engine anyways.

The let down with this bike has squarely been Honda and it's dealerships. Parts are ridiculous, as are service charges and fees (spare key? £170odd please, washer? £3odd, O-ring? £5odd, etc.). See one commenter gets a 5 year warranty in the Netherlands, go a couple months past the two year in the UK and even if the defects obvious you can go swing. So the affordable commuter starts becoming anything but. Funny though because it doesn't seem to cross Honda's hive mind that repeat custom is less likely when you feel shafted.

@@stevebolton8471 was on a BMW course and some of the participants confirmed as much! To be fair, the NC is not a premium bike (whereas the BMW's usually are). If Honda made it a shaft drive, threw in a centre stand, taller screen, adjustable pegs, bigger fuel tank and made its running costs economical they would sell like hot cakes. As it stands they seem more interested in a pound of flesh sales strategy. Not unusual for large corporations to be out of touch with their demographics.

So so frustrating. What were the designers thinking 💭? when they decided that the storage module was big enough? 😩😤. My helmets are large, but medium sized head. I couldn’t get my helmet in there either and I would buy this bike for that exact feature 🤷‍♂️. Perplexed. In general, and provided they were all slightly larger, I wish that many manufacturers would produce a model or two with this design feature. I always, (expect on longer off road rides) have a top box on my VStrom, and a large tank bag. Often very tight for space but I’d rather struggle with it than put the panniers on. Not a practical thing. I simply have an unreasonable aversion to them. If I had a really good tank location storage module on the whole for me that would make a world of difference. All the difference. I’d still wack a tank bag on top. With this setup I could easily travel for days. Easily get groceries. Normally have a secure place to store my helmet for every day use. It would transform the everyday experience. But alas 🤷‍♂️, the only bike to offer it stuffed it up ⬆️🙄.

The servicing of bikes is not covered by the same legislation as cars and they do need to be serviced by the dealer to maintain the warranty. Here’s a passage from a motorcycle specialist lawyer. The short answer is that if you have your bike serviced by a perfectly reputable, fully qualified mechanic using all the appropriate parts and specified fluids, the exemption that applies to cars under the Office of Fair Trading guidance, which led to the OFT threatening to take all major motor manufacturers to Court, does not apply to motorcycles. They comment that you could take it to court argue it was unfair but that could cost.

No centre stand means less weight and considering it is a 750 and it is 215kg, and the Africa Twin 1100 is about 230kg, that bike could do with a bit of a diet. I'm sure a couple of Denali lights on it would make all the difference at night and adding a few aftermarket farkles would sort out the rest.
