Living with the Mazda MX-5 RF for a week is fantastic!!

I was fortunate enough to have this MX-5 Miata RF as my press car for an entire week!! Since I have already done my review on this vehicle I wanted to really switch things up and show you what it was like to have this car in my possession and what a day with the RF is like.

It's evident by the comments here that people's comprehension is either severely handicapped or they didn't watch the video, where he says its a press car, and therefore not his, and as such he did not buy an AUTO MX-5. That said, it also appears that many folks here have some insecurities when it comes to transmissions, and seem to think everyone needs to buy this car in a manual and it shouldn't even be offered in a automatic. Take your arrogance elsewhere and consider that at least half the sales of this car are automatics, think Mazda would keep this car around if half of the sales were gone if they only offered a manual? Short answer: No. This car deserves whatever the buyer wants it to have, whether its manual or auto, enjoy the car, and let others enjoy their cars regardless of the transmission.

I'm 6 feet and when I sat in RF with Recaro seats, I had head room to spare, approx 2 inches and same around the wheel. Now I have to test drive one, I loved the feeling inside. I did not feel cramped. I could raise my head and I could not touch the roof.

I'm 6'4" and I fit okay, but the way this car drives definitely compensates for feeling a little cramped. If you put the back of the seat forward and then scoot the bottom back, you can get a couple more inches of leg room. (hopefully that made sense).

awesome video man, i holded off ordering the RF and got the soft top due to the weight difference. Other then it weighs more then mine I do love the looks of the RF and think Mazda did a fantastic job designing it. They are great cars and tons of fun to drive. I have the club edition with BBS and Brembo package and really do use it for braking and handling in the curves. I still need to autocross sometime and get some track times.

Question with the RF: Does the Targa top provide enough structural support to allow you to swing into the drivers seat without opening the door, If you place your right hand on the fastback and the other on the frame of the windshield?

That thing is designed to withstand rollover crash. It would be pretty pathetic and very dangerous, if you could bend it by bare hand.

Hazard style?! The buttresses are plastic covers and the roof sections aluminium, i believe only the back roll bar sections are structural + the windshield. Give it a go and and get it on camera. And you have to wear Daisy Dukes too. I think that's an actual law.

The windhsield frame is structucal and withstands a rollover, so are the bars directly behind the seats. the roof mechanic is definitely not meant to absorb loads. so i wouldn´t jump in that way.

Good review, mate. I have the same car in manual , and same colour, here in Australia. I'm 183 cm/6'0", and I find the driving position spot on, even with the tilt only steering column adjustment. Highly involving to drive, with excellent handling and good performance. I can accept the mediocre practicality. It truly is an all weather car.

I have a 2014 Miata I plan to drive it for 20 years because the body is made of composite plastic and aluminum. One draw back the aluminum body requires a paint that remains flexible and therefore soft, scratching easy.

I'm getting this in machine grey soon with an Auto, especially after you demo'd the speed of paddle changing. can't understand the hate for the auto from some people, don't get this for other autos from BMW, Porsche, Audi etc etc. Some men seem to make a strange link between their masculinity and pumping their leg up and down whilst repeatedly moving a small stick. I don't take my clothes to a river and beat them on a rock, i use a machine which is better and quicker than me. Same for transmissions.

Good video stabilization! As far as the auto, if you do a lot of city driving....maybe. Otherwise, MX-5 must come with a manual, IMFO. After 16 years with a '01, I would have it no other way. Also, beautiful color, but I have NEVER parallel parked. It is almost guaranteed that your front or rear bumper will get hit. And that is an especially difficult (not impossible) color to match plus the $$$ to repair. And I would never take it through an auto car wash unless no other option and then only if it was touchless. But enjoy, BEAUTIFUL! Cheers, OHIO

And its probably faster too because you dont get any RPM and or speed drop between shifts.. No gaps. Manuals are fun and great for the driving experience but modern autos with manual modes are just as good or better. So far all of the reviews and videos I've seen on this car have been by people that are 6ft or taller... and it's almost the only complaint, jesus is every car enthusiast a giant or something? I'm glad to be 5'7 and never have to worry about height being an issue when buying a car. To say something more related to the actual video though... I do think it would be a lot smarter to buy the soft top version as i can imagine it isn't going to be cheap to repair the RF function if anyone messes up on it... or if it starts to get rusty. Years in the future when these cars are like 10 years old i could see a case where most of them have problems with the RFs malfunctioning... meanwhile you don't have to worry about any of that stuff for longevity with a soft top, just buy a replacement and pop it on. Not to mention soft top is a hell of a lot cheaper, sure it won't be as quiet as the RF but it's a convertible...

Totally agree with everything in the video, except for the geriatric greigy-beigy interior. This car can the seen as two things a) as a contemporary sports car, that "wants" to be driven on a track, or b) an hommage to the great British roadsters of the 60s. If you go with the retro look, than tan leather would indeed be a good option, especially if combined with a cool or neutral body color, if however you want to go for the sporty look & feel, the black leather will reduce visual complexity of the interior and enhance the idea of a "driving tool". Red & tan is a combination for the proverbial "secretary car", something the ND explicitly doesn't want to be...

It would if it were at the position of a spoiler, but since it's located so close to the windshield, the air just rushes overhead and flows downward like it does with a normal car. There is some buffeting, but it's not really bad unless you're at insane speeds (100+), which most people aren't going to do anyway.

Nice video but gotta disagree with some of your feedback. The MX 5 Nappa seats are lower than the RF cause the Nappa seats in the MX 5 has less cushion so it's better for taller guys.I found the downfall of the RF. 1) less head room (about one inch less than MX 5 soft top)2) automatic drive (not so fun)
