I’m a disabled veteran, I was given a female Boerboel. She has become one of the best dogs I’ve ever had. She is so smart and is always looking out for trouble. I live in the country and she alerts me when something or someone is near, that doesn’t belong. She is a true guardian angel who I trust with my life.

Best video I’ve seen on living with a Boerboel. I’ve had dogs for years ( I’m 55) and 3 years ago purchased my first Boerboel and what a journey that has been. Everything you have said is true. We had some difficult moments where I had to “man up” and show her who the boss is, now 3 years down the track she knows her place ( most of the time) and is only a little grumpy when she is tired .

I'm ready for a new companion after my rottweiler died a few years ago... Rollo was my service animal as I live with PTSD and he was my best friend. I miss him so much. I'm thinking about getting a Boerboel Mastiff soon and have a breeder picked out. He needs to be able to come everywhere with me, including my workplace (I own a theatre company) and I like the slightly more chilled disposition of these types compared to my working line rotty. Although, as everyone knows, it's all about their environment and their owner... he will get so much attention and love from his environment that I'm sure he'll fit in perfectly. I just need a new best mate to hang with me in my office and keep me centered on my walks through the forest behind my house. I know what I'm doing, I've trained many large dogs and rehabilitated some problem rotties successfully to be rehomed. So I'll raise my mastiff with a ridiculous amount of socialising... I think I've made my choice, I've always had rotties, although Rollo was special and I don't think I'll ever get another rotty like him... this time I'm going for a Boerboel. I'm going to name him Cecil. I can't wait! Only problem is, owning a dog like this brings A LOT of attention. Walking Rollo was like walking down the street with a freakin' rockstar! I'm sure my Cecil will bring just as much attention lol 😂 It's part of the deal though, I like to be different and it helps me socialise too. He just has to be a boy, because I only have daughters and work mostly with women. I just need at least one boy in my corner lol.

From what you’re saying about your situation and experience the Boerboel will be perfect for you. The first year and a half takes a lot of effort but is worthwhile as you will never get a better friend. The Rottweiler is a great guardian but the Boerboel takes it to another level and spends most of his day doing a threat assessment. You are correct in thinking that everyone will stop you and want to know what your dog is. As the Boerboel transition’s from being a puppy to being a teenager they start to be wary of strangers(wary not scared), they won’t bite but they do not appreciate being petted by people they do not know. A Boerboel will approach somebody on their own terms and in their own time. As for members of the public approaching you asking to pet your dog, I just put a harness which has IN TRAINING in fluorescent orange on it. The leash is attached to a martingale collar as you do not want go head to head with a 200lbs dog in a harness. Do some research about the breed and the real breed standard because a lot of the Boerboels are too square and not athletic enough and indeed not fit for purpose. I have owned 4 different males. Be very careful who you let approach him. Not all of them like to be pet by strangers. You will be safe and loved. The only time I felt more safe was when I had a male Lion. Lions can't go everywhere with you. If there is something he considers a threat to you, he will take care of it. You need to really find out if the Boerboel would make a good service dog. He may be to protective of you. Boerboels are independent thinkers. They are my breed of choice.

These dogs weigh up to 200 lb. My dog wears a prong collar. Whenever we're in public. There's always some ken or Karen who has something to say about the collar. Keep walking your chocolate lab, worry about yourself more and other people less

My brother lives in a smaller town in South Africa. His first boerboel died young of cancer, He was inconsolable for a long time…..it took years before he got his sencond one, but I noticed he never allowed himself to get as close to him as his first, That dog was his baby forever.

Hava a 2.5 year old male when you have the power and can handle this kind of power with a normal collar then its good, my boy is 65kg and extreme explosive and high energetic drive my wife cant walk him with a normal collar she need a chain because he is so dominat against other males and when he meet the wrong male my wife is not able to hold him with a normal collar.

Training with the choke chain I found best. It helps to have space that walks aren't necessary and other dogs are not around. I wouldn't expect anyone to hold back this type of power

Most are big for nothing. We got breeders breeding purely for size and bragging about overweight dogs as if it’s a sales pitch. The breed will go the same way as other mastiff breeds. Every generation it’ll be diluted more and more from its genetics. The reason is other breeds can do the same job but better. The more popular the breed gets the worse it will get. The best hope is a few like minded individuals set up a registry and put on events where the dogs are tested and recognised when they pass working tests. I used to be a fan of the boerboel. Thought it might offer some hope to having a working mastiff. Most of what I see today looks terrible.
