Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder that causes patches of skin to lose pigment or color. This happens when melanocytes - skin cells that make pigment - are attacked and destroyed, causing the skin to turn a milky-white color.

Awww… He did. According to Wikipedia, he treated the condition by using fair-coloured makeup and likely skin-bleaching prescription creams to cover up the uneven blotches of color caused by Vitiligo. The creams further lightened his skin. And the lighter skin resulted in criticism that he was trying to appear white.
