Dude, I can't let that go without some push back. Yes, racism of sorts will always be around to some degree... and yes, it was a huge problem on the Caribbean side just a few decades ago. But all in all, sounds more like you have an axe to grind because that's just not generally true.

Michael Allen this was a refreshing video and Thanks you for your perspective. I am a little older than middle age and I living just South of San Francisco. I feel like this area is very entitled and has many of aspects of the “woke” culture you mentioned. At times it just feels like there is a lot of unnecessary anger and hostility and this makes it difficult to live here and I find myself tip toeing around for fear of unintentionally offending someone. Sometimes I feel like I need to carry around a clipboard and when I meet someone have them fill it out before speaking or interacting. “…please check all the boxes that you identify with: gay, straight, Latino, black, white, etc… AND please mark all the boxes along with any comments issues, political or otherwise that that turn you into an insane crazy lunatic that makes you want to destroy the world.”

I have a brother who's gay (I'm 19 years older than him) and a daughter who is bi and dating a boy who is asexual. They are all under the age of 25 and it is exhausting for me to keep up with! I'm glad to know that Costa Rica is a live and let live type of place. I don't need a rainbow flag (with brown on it) to remind me that there are more than just heterosexual people existing on this planet who deserve to be treated with respect. I don't care if M & Ms are wearing go go boots or sneakers. I don't want to have heated conversations with people about drag queen story time and CRT book bans. I just want to chill. 🌅 ☕ Interestingly enough, I was just chatting yesterday about this with a friend who lives in Hawaii. He was saying the exact same thing: mainlanders are coming over to the Big Island trying to push their WOKE agenda on the Hawaiians who want nothing to do with it. I am from San Francisco (1970s SF, not SF 2.0) need I say more? Haha...Although I really don't care what anyone's sexual preference is, in my mind Gay Pride almost borders on Narcissism. I've often thought Gee maybe I should start a parade for interracial couples, hmmm...💭💭💭 There is so much I could say...what I will say is that: after San Francisco I lived in Santa Cruz where folks are pretty tolerant and accepting of everyone (as am I) as long as you don't push your agenda on me. Live and let live. ☮️ 🕉️ 💗

I believe their are two genders based on whether you have a Y chromosome and what genitalia you have. There is however a full spectrum of variation of characteristics within those genders. I believe that a male who feels more like how he thinks a woman would feel is still male, although on the effeminate end of the male spectrum. It would be nice if everyone could just accept themselves as they are rather than self mutilating to become something they aren't. I also believe that the transgender movement is being spurred by people who are just unhappy with themselves and their lives and think any change will improve things. I think this is why there is such an unbelievably high suicide rate both before and after transition for these people. Lastly on this subject, I think that allowing, or worse encouraging a child to make drastic irreversible changes to their bodies before becoming adults is child abuse.

I'm a Tico who came to the states when I was 4 yoa and am considering moving back, and i watched this video to get a sense for how much the scourge of wokeism has infiltrated my homeland, and this video gave me some peace of mind that it is nowhere near as bad as in Gringolandia. Thank God! BTW, "woke" is the American black vernacular term for "critical consciousness". Critical consciousness is an academic term coined by Paolo Freire, a Marxist Brazilian academic (surprise, surprise!). According to Freire, Critical consciousness is reached when you learn how to see the ills and remedies of the world "properly" from a progressive/Marxist perspective. According to critical consciousness, one is either the oppressor or the oppressed. You can pick your subject of oppression, whether it be race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. For example, racial minorities are oppressed by the evil white oppressors; homosexuals are oppressed by evil heterosexuals; women are oppressed by evil men, etc. Once you see things through this lens, you have reached critical consciousness, or have become "woke". Overall, a good video that gave me hope that my country hasn't been TOTALLY destroyed by foreigners. PS. Fellow 'Muricans, Canadians, Europeans, etc., please stop moving there! ✌️

And through her channel I came across some channels from real trans people - people who suffer from gender disphoria. And they also say the same things you say here. Oh, and I like what you said, "Prejudice is a thought; discrimination is an action." I never thought about that, but it's totally true. Thanks for all you do. I was with you until about 7 minutes in. For me LGBTQIA+ isn't meaningless. I know people who are in every situation that acronym represents. I'm a US-based gay man who's totally on board with it. I don't know who is flying Pride or Progress flags in classrooms, but gay people's existence is not a kind of competitive nationalism. Nor is US nationalism. The idea that the US flag is "against" other flags is problematic: we're not picking any fights even if we might have different policies for different countries. Even when we go to war, we want the best result in the end for our rivals. Always love to hear your view.
@TravelCostaRicaNOW

I see what you're saying... but the alphabet and the gay pride flag has definitely been hijacked. What are there..... 28 different flags now? Soon, all 26 letters will be represented. It's ridiculous. 'Situations' are an extremely slippy slope. As far as the classrooms, no other flags belong there except the US flag. The US flag isn't against anything but it does represent something.... freedom, to anyone who lives in the US. But then again, I live in CR,,,, I got a few years before it gets so ridiculous... And I love to hear your view as well. :)

Great to hear a gay with a reasonable position. You're right it's been hijacked, as a straight person it's really hard to understand why gay, and particularly transsexual, issues have become such a big issue, at least over here in the UK. There are so few trans people around, no doubt some things aren't to their liking, but there are many minorities with slightly suboptimal situations, to say nothing of massive global problems that get less airtime, it's hard to understand why the trans issue gets such a massive profile.

I had a brother (20 years older than me) who was gay in the ‘60’s. He had to leave the USA so as not to embarrass our parents. We lived in a small town. He’s gone now, but I still feel terrible that he felt he had to move because in those days it was totally unacceptable. So for the young gays out there, don’t think thing’s are much better than they were. None of my straight friends give a damn whether someone is gay or not. None of my damn business just like what happens between me and wife is anybody’s business. But you hit the nail on the head with all this woke crap that is just dividing everyone. Which is exactly what THEY want. Who’s they? Lol. Don’t have enough time for that one.

The issue with the bakery is that people can then use religion as an excuse, so I could say well, as per my religion/faith/cult or whatever I won't bake a cake for a Jew, or a swinger, or an Asian, or a black person, etc... his job is to bake a cake, it is not his business what the cake is for. period. THEY are creating division. And I agree with the gay flag thing everywhere, or pride events almost every month LOL because it feels like we are enforcing the gay thing everywhere and all the time. We just need to find better ways to make gay kids more safe and less bullying at schools.

It's sad because the trans agenda is potentially harming young kids who may just grow up to be gay or lesbian. But now if there is a feminine boy or masculine girl, they assume transgender. Kids are being pushed to transition, when they are incapable of grasping what they are doing. As a lesbian myself I find it odd that we paved the way for rights, but are now called transphobic because we believe in the binary, and don't want to sleep with a woman with a penis. Kind of defeats the whole point of being lesbian, lol. Many L, G, & B's have left the group because there are so many letters and nonsense now it doesn't really mean anything. There is a letter for everyone, but to be included you have to agree with whatever those driving the bus say you must believe. No more live and let live. Really strange times...and I hope like a fad it passes soon.

Don't really agree, as a Costa Rican. Yes, there is a lot of people in the country that is against the so-called, non-existent "gender ideology" and there are areas in the country where opposition from parents against e.g. sexual education (which is nothing but preventing undesired pregnancies, diminishing bullying and abusive relationships), like almost of San Carlos...there is also a lot of people, a bigger group from my experience that at least tolerates the matter, if not is fully "woke". It is just a matter of looking at the laws that have been enacted in recent decades, the growth in visibility of the LGBTI Costa Rican community, the change in attitude towards racial discrimination (a recent case in an elementary school really galvanized the country against discriminatory discourse), the change of representation of these subjects in the media (which, by the 90s, was still pretty hostile), press, and how these subjects are discussed and studied in the academia...for me it's pretty clear that there has been a huge culture change from my childhood, in the 80s and 90s...and of course, there is still a long change to be made. Of course, in the Central Valley there is a lot of advancement on these matters in comparison to smaller cities and those are more advanced than rural areas, but change is happening everywhere. On another matter the strongest opposition to LGBTI subjects is not from the Catholic church and people, but from the evangelicals and other Christian denominations, that already represent well above 20% of the population.

I think the French and the Ticos come from a very different place with bad service. With the French, really some Parisians more than all of France, its an aggression. With the Ticos its just they don't have a service culture mentality where one person should serve another person even though that's their job. I think Costa Rica is more of a true egalitarian society where they really don't think its their job to provide service to other people. One of things about Mexican culture and language that pisses off Costa Ricans is the use of the term "mande" in Mexico and among Mexicans. It literally means "command me" which is undoubtedly inspired by the Mexican highly classist stratified culture. To a Costa Rican, it sounds horrible as they dont believe anyone should be subservient to anyone else. So in a way, bad service in Costa Rica is a sense of egalitarianism and almost national pride.

You don't need a US flag in the classroom either. Not everyone living in the states believes in the federal government. It is quite possible to be proud of where you live and not proud of the federal or even state governments. If we want to continue on the path of eradicating oppression, then we should all be reconsidering the arbitrary lines of nationhood that divide us in addition to those of race, gender, sexuality. p.s. Intersex people do exist and biologially, your trans friends are neither male nor female - gender is an arbitrary social label, distinct from biological sex. Also, more and more people are using "e" at the ends of gendered words in Spanish in place of "o" and "a". Languages do evolve, albeit generally slowly. If you're in favour of fostering unity rather than division, you should have no problem with this linguistic development.
@TravelCostaRicaNOW
@TravelCostaRicaNOW Жыл бұрын
Disagree.... but I am not a fan of the federal government. The flag is a reminder that we're in the land of the free and if you want to achieve something you can. I know, I know, the field is not level, I get that but the concept is a unifying one in my opinion. Oppression.... come on. Yes, there will always be a ways to go... but we are not as divided in race, gender, sexuality as you suggest. Biologically, my trans friends are male. Hell, they may be more gay than trans, time will tell (which is the point). And I would point out,,, about 60% of young people who identify as trans, identify as gay only as they get older. And look at all the kids detransitioning. Respect people but you can't blur every line, blow up science (biology) like it isn't fact. You need somewhere to start- that's male and female. But yes, it goes in different directions from there. So what. Do you. I"m all for it. Identifying as 'they' or 'them', fine, but you can't compel folks to use those terms.

@@manolokonosko2868 There two ways of looking at that. Hypocritical or non-confrontational. Most Costa Ricans are non-confrontational as part of their culture. Costa Ricans from all classes and races had to work together to survive during the colonial period as there were few indigenous people who survived the diseases that Columbus brought to Costa Rica and the majority of the ones that did survive fled to very remote areas. There were few black slaves and very little wealth or support from Spain. The small population of Spanish Hidalgos and settlers had to mix with the slaves and few mestizos working the fields together to survive. That kind of survival cooperation tends to engender a non-confrontational culture. Almost every Costa Rican is a mestizo of black, indian tribes, and predominantly European, which shows they more than tolerated each other. Costa Ricans will say they are white European, but genetic tests reveal that Costa Rica is one of the most genetically racially integrated countries in the world, just predominantly European and less racially and socially stratefied compared to any other Latin American country. The exception is the Caribbean Jamaicans, but that was a settlement 200 to 300 years later than the initial colonial integration period.
